How I Ran Away To Join the Circus

- I grew up in the circus, but by the time I left my real job in 2023, I'd been living in the "normal world" for a looooooong time. Here's a little story of how I ran away from the circus to go join and an office and then ran away again.
#circus #jacqueszewhipper #renfaire #renfest - Komedie
The voice of a radio man, the face of a movie star, and America's Ass. Truly, a blessed exitance.
Captain America enters chat
I believe that's FRANCE'S ass, like the Statue of Liberty, relocated to America. 😆

This guy looks about 10 years younger than he really is. Men the world over could use some beauty secrets. Also, a cat dad! Very cool.
Frances ass !
You're telling me this man was in college in 2006 and he still looks like he could be in college in 2024?!?!
He apparently has an epic skincare routine and has done for a really long time. I think he did a short about it?
Woah! Yeah. He does look real young
@@vee_tinymoose yes, he emphasized moisturizer and sunscreen, and starting in his teens
........ fuc you....... that isn't that old. 😕......... j/k
@@audreymeyer5616 He's only 35. I call that pretty young.
You can take the boy out of NPR but you can't take that very distinct NPR tone out the boy's voice when he's doing podcasts.
As much as I enjoy JACQUES, the Public Radio Nerd in me truly thanks Jack for his work, especially during the pandemic.
Same. Plus, he has integrity.
Right? i had no idea he was in radio, and NPR at that!
Well as someone who apparently listened to Jack for years on WBUR and who had NO IDEA he was also Jacques Ze Whipper, I can personally attest to his acting ability and capability to get into character.
Also, while I'm sure his show has improved and been refined through the years, this was a lesson for me in how much fantastic talent goes unrecognized, cast aside unwittingly by people who would make a fortune if they took a chance on someone.
Thanks for sharing your story, getting us through the pandemic, and making us laugh.
It's also a lesson on commitment
I also listened to jack for years on WBUR and just found out he is Jacque ze whipper 🤯 he’s still got that radio voice though, I can almost imagine I’m listening to 90.9 😂
I was coming here to say this! Grew up in the Boston area listening to NPR and it's very cool to learn that I was probably hearing Jack for a lot of that time!
At the age of 29, I ran away and joined a Circus. That was in the mid 90s. Best adventure and learning experience I ever had. It was one of the last one ring tent circuses in the country at the time. It closed down 2 years later. Circuses are a wonderous part of history. We are blessed to be a part of that history. Thank you for your story. It reminded me of better days and rich adventure.
Can I ask what did you do after and now
@@user-wz9cf6kq7x I was a baker for many years. Now I drive over the road. Not so different from driving from town to town when I was with the circus.
I can't believe KRF let you go. That has to be the biggest bonehead move in renaissance festival history. My daughters work in one of the stores & my cousin's son worked as a jouster until this year so I know a lot of what happened. You’ll be missed in Carver come September 😔
As someone who lives in Maryland but is going to start in college in Boston, this is so annoying. I only found out about him this winter, so I wouldn't have known to see him at last year's renn faire, and I'm pretty sure I'll have to move in before this year's renn faire. I'd assumed that I would at least be able to see him at KRF but apparently not. Why did they let him go? (If you're allowed to say)
KRF and it's owners have always been ridiculous. When I lived in Carver I could never get over all the people who'd pay a fortune to get in.
What happened with KRF? I only knew he wasn’t there anymore.
Wait, what?
Him now too? They're losing their best acts left and right... yeah, I think I won't be going back again until they sort out whatever this latest drama that's been going on around the talent the last few years. That sucks.
And what sucks most us they're my local Faire. Easiest to get to and the one I'd like to support. But I can't if they keep pulling this crap. Who is left there orth going to see at this point.
I performed four weekends at KRF last year and got absolutely no support from management and had to fight to promote my show there. Unsurprisingly, I’m not returning either. Nowhere near the following of Jack, but that Faire is sadly ridiculous.
I'm over 60, but when I was 20 I ran away & joined the carnival as a fortune teller. Best time of my life! My son now gets upset with me because I'm constantly trying to talk my 2 yr old grandson into joining the circus someday. I think everyone should work as either a circus performer or in the carnival. It can be so awesome! You do a wonderful job! Much respect from East Texas 💖💖💖
I retired from 34 years of retail management from an off priced chain.
I am now turning furniture into art pieces on my own schedule!
2nd careers by choice are great!
Congratulations on your successful move.
I so love the Jaques Ze Whipper character that the news anchor voice is scaring me. 😂 But I suspect that’s just the voice of “speaking professionally” for you now. I’d totally rock up to Jacques at a Ren Faire, but if newscaster voice showed up I’d think management was shutting down our booth! Keep posting! Love your content.
As someone who’s facing a job-crossroads and is starting a podcast at almost 30; this is incredibly reassuring
Bruh I'm 42 and trying a particular niche, you got time man
This is something that I think a lot of folks, myself included, needed to hear. Thanks, Jacques.
yeah that leap of faith .. even when fully researched ..is still a leap!
This has the potential to be an incredibly inspiring and motivating autobiography. You could cover your winters by being a keynote speaker - the world is your oyster and it's amazing to see!
I am technically impaired about social media so when my son showed me your videos we drove 7 hours just to see you. Haven't had a reason to smile in a while and your show and whole attitude brought me out of it. Thanks also to your brilliant wife G for without her I wouldn't be able to find these things. Best of luck to both of you.❤ 18 days till I see you again 😁
Life is such a crazy thing. I went to college initially for biology. Hated it and changed to Business and Poli Sci. Sadly, due to financial issues and family members with health problems, I never got to finish my degree. I eventually got a job at a bank and worked there for 9yrs. When my first child turned one, I became a SAHM. That's been 8yrs now. I had always put off my true hobby and passion as just a fun thing to do on the side, but I'm embracing it now. So at 40yrs old, I'm working on and nearly finished writing my first book. My goal is to have it completed and hopefully published this year. I don't even care if it becomes a best seller (though that would be amazing!) I'm just happy to accomplish this goal and to show my children that they should never give up on their dreams and you never know what life has in store for you!
We must have your name. I love to support writers. May success in the writers world rain on you!!
I second the request for a name, though I will settle for a - what's it about? 😄
@@tangelite9968 When I get around to finishing and hopefully published, I will try to remember to share it here! Thank you for your support and encouragement!!
@@Fartheraway908 Only have a working title at the moment, but when I finish I'll try to remember to share it here! As for what it's about, I typically write YA fantasy. My current WIP is about a girl whose bad luck is so strong she can see it. It eventually leads her down a path to change her life, learn to trust her instincts, and that the world is not all that it appears.
@@SakuraFlame Awww, you're most welcome. I have a few friends that are published. Seen first hand how much work it is. I am excited for you!!!
Wait, back up. Jacques Ze Whipper = Jack Lepiarz. It's gonna take me some time to process this.
Right?!
😂
And I still miss his voice on NPR.
Some *REALLY UNLADYLIKE* words came out of my mouth when I made that connection.
Like Batman and Bruce Wayne
Please more long form videos of Jack's stories and/or life advice. 🙏
I will say this again... your "origin story" and lived experience is the stuff of keynote/commencement speakers! I know you have a packed schedule with performances, but y'all... someone get this man a keynote gig focused on risk-taking, hard work, resilience, and embracing your passions! You and G are such a dynamic duo.
OMG it's been a real pleasure to watch you from 2012 grow in real life, in your skills, in social media numbers. Thank you for sharing your journey!!!
Merci beaucoup, Jacques, for this uplifting story. I, too, quit my real world job in my mid 30s to "join the circus". I went into acting and it was the best decision I could have made. Had a wonderful couple of years, until I got into an accident, which now makes me unable to make it in the acting world anymore. So I'm switching careers again. Your story is uplifting in making me realise I'm not the only one to go through a tumultuous life. (also working on a way to perform at a sort of ren faire in the Netherlands, but that's still very uncertain)
I've listened to NPR for years and somehow went "This guy sounds familiar..." but never put 2 and 2 together. Seeing that clip of your last broadcast I remember driving home and hearing it. Thank you for all the work you did with WBUR. This video was exactly the message I needed to hear. Things in life have been turbulent, including employment, and it gives me hope to see that even today you can live comfortably when you run away to join the circus. It's that kind of hope I've been trying to find.
I saw you in FL in 2023 and I'd had no idea you were just starting your full-time adventure! Loved your show and it's even cooler now that i know more about your story. Hang in there! A busier schedule while difficult can only help set you up in a better position for the future.
Kudos to you for having the courage (and of course the support of Mrs. Jacque Ze Whipper and Scipio) to run away to the circus again! As someone who too left radio after seven years (local HS/college sports broadcasting) because I knew the drive to keep improving and grinding wasn’t there anymore, I certainly relate to the feelings you shared. Glad the whippy show is going strong and keeping you busy in 2024 and beyond!
Great story to listen to. Also, hey... PUT YOUR PATREON LINK IN THE DESCRIPTION. That's some free YT advice :)
JACK! my first encounter outside of the TikTok-ish clips, and you really make a good impression. I loved your whole story, and I found elements of you that I wish were me. I am however within 2 years of retiring, so my opportunities with the circus may be a bit limited. I will have to be content to encourage fine individuals like yourself to keep going with something you love. Big thanks to the wife for her great help to you, and I know the value of B&H since I am an amateur photographer. Cheers from Texas!
We missed you at the Texas Scarborough RenFaire last month. My family couldn't brave that Saturday rain, but we thought we'd see you on Sunday. So did (apparently) 10,000+ other people who were looking to take advantage of some good weather. The line just to turn onto the street that should be the "line" was backed up over two miles, so we made the regrettable decision to try another weekend. My kids were terribly disappointed (we've seen your show several times in previous years and their love for your show is quite organic, as they are young enough to not have TikTok). I know you're much busier now, but we hope you come back next year!
Watching this, I glance at my ‘Jaque ze whipper’ toy and smile. Your videos always make me smile, thank you.
(And it’s nice to find that my family aren’t the only ones who ‘scream’ back at our noisy cat, lol
I quit driving a forklift to have Narcolepsy. But on a serious note i wish i was steadfast in my music career when I was younger, could have been in a different place. But the narcolepsy diagnosis led to quitting and may be leading to a better suited career. Mid 30s are weird. Thirty and thriving. And it's nice that y'all can travel together. Hoping that the travel will bring you to Savannah
I'm an NPR nerd and I never made the connection, but I was listening while I made breakfast, and it was bugging me that I knew that voice. I ABSOLUTELY have been listening to you for years 🤯
I'll never get tired of this story ! Shoutout to G for the awesome video ;) It was very funny to see all those old clips. Keep up the good work you two, you make us frenchies very proud
You-and G-are an inspiration, pursuing your best life. We’re the fortunate ones who get to benefit from the joy you two work so hard to provide!
I caught your AGT performance purely by chance. Definitely swore really loud when I figured out why you sounded so familiar.
Thank you for sharing your adventures with us.
I wish you could come out to The Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Irwindale, California, in the future. I volunteer there in St Ives Guild. I have enjoyed going to this faire since the 1970's in the Agoura Hills, California. Your quality of performance shines and gives enjoyment to many people including me. Glad I found your video/vlogs on Utube..... Hello 👋🏻 from Southern California 🌴😊
I totally remember you from your NPR days. Heard you plenty of times here on KUOW when they would play your clips from WBUR. Congratulations on choosing “whipper life”!
Listening to this while making myself some lunch, you do have that great easy-to-listen radio voice and I'm glad that you used it in the past. Keep on whippin' on, Jacques.
I will miss seeing you at KRF! It just won't be the same. I will miss those whips cracking first thing in the morning! I wish nothing but the best for you and all your new adventures!! I hope that some day you can find time to visit us. HUGS to you, my friend!!
It's never too late to learn something new, to start something new, to take a path unlike anything you've traveled before. That's when you discover who you truly are.
I'll be 58 in a couple of weeks and I'm still finding surprising things about myself and the world. It's exciting!
P.S. I envy your wife's trip to B&H.
I didn't know you were a radio man, now i get the radio demon joke
Really enjoyed hearing about your journey into performance work. I have become a fan through your posts on CZcams and I've shared those posts with friends and family. Hope to see one of your live performances one day.
Thanks for posting this! I have become a fan of Jacques recently, but now I am a fan of Jack too. It is so good to discover the real person behind the flamboyant Frenchman's moustache. I really hope I will see your show in person someday. Love from Italy ❤
So glad you were able to go full time! You should come to the PA Renn Faire! Ours is weird as it's not really a summer season. Mostly fall and now they're trying to get some interest for winter shows.
I'm about to be "retired" from my job of 29 years, the dog walking gig looks better and better every day. Thanks for showing we can all take a leap!
I’m actually planning on driving down to Larkspur to catch you at the Colorado show. I’ll probably just see you and then leave.
Huge thanks to you and your wife for all of the smiles, laughter and joy you all provide across the country and all over the world.
I am watching this and feeling 98% certain that I will leave my job that pays the bills but sucks my soul to go do theatre work full time and I want to THANK YOU for talking about moving away from "steady" work toward the job of joy and pride WITH A PLAN and consideration before comitting. 💚
I am trying to reconcile his adorable face with that of Jacques Ze Whipper. I need the stache, please.
congrats! also would love to see you at the Ohio Renaissance Fair, but if that's not a possibility I shall simply continue to enjoy the clips uploaded here.
Jack. Thank you ao very much. Im currently in a job crisis, and a mental one as well. This helps a lot, just reminding me that i can do pretty much whatever i want. Thank you.
I lived in Watertown during the Marathon bombing and remember your coverage. Thanks for all your great work on WBUR, we listened to you many days on our laptops at work (and in traffic ;) ).
I go to Florida Renaissance festival and make a point to see you every year. This was awesome story.
I have seen your show 3 times live and I have to say, it was almost the best part of the renaissance here. The only thing that beat you was the turkey leg and lemon ice :) As a show though, you are number 1
My wife has a similar story, albeit a little less dramatic. For over 10 years she has worked as a graphic design artist. She realized about 2 years ago that she hates where she is working, and it stems from though vey skilled, she was kinda pushed into the career choice by her parent. So, after a lot of thought in introspection, she 'ran off' and started the steps to be a full time massage therapist. She finished earlier this year, and is in the phase of getting her ducks in a row to fully leave a field she invested over a decade in, with health, 401k, the whole 9 yards to do something she feels great doing. I can't be happier for her finding her passion, and having the guts to go off and do it.
Thanks for this. You are an inspiration for so many including myself. Your story helped me decide its was time for a carrier change. I thought if Jack and G can make such a huge change then why can’t I. So again thank you❤
Always love seeing the kitty and love your sense of humor. Keeps turning a quick (naught) rhymes 😂
Great story. Keep them coming! I have seen your shows at various ren faires across the US. Originally from the West Coast , I recently moved to the East Coast. Thank you for whipping joy across the land!
I am at the point in my life that I need to run away to the circus!
My daughter and I first saw you at the Tennessee Renaissance Faire some 10 or 12 years ago. You were our favorite show. We were so stoked when we saw you on Tik Tok and CZcams. We were even more stoked to find out you worked for NPR.
Well done you! ❤ You‘re right, sometimes one has to listen to that inner voice when it calls for change. I went into teaching at 42 and while it was a massive challenge, that truly was the best decision I ever made! 😊 So you could probably say that in my own way I joined a circus too - pretty much feels like it sometimes 😅 All the best from across the Atlantic (any shows in store for Germany, perhaps…? I‘m sure the Ramstein Community would love Jaques Ze Whipper to stop by one of these days) 🙃
I was a nurse for years, but I have a degenerative condition that makes walking difficult, so in my early 50s, I've gone back to school. It's fun and scary and I don't regret it at all.
Congrats! You did it all the smart way. Hold onto the steady gig and perfect and build your image until you can launch. So many people take that plunge without doing the setup and when they can't pay the bills they get stuck and feel like they failed.
I started watching you on Tiktok in 2020 because the only thing that distracted me from my six months of morning sickness was watching videos. I'm looking forward to seeing you in person in Larkspur.
I was sad that I missed you in Texas, hopefully you will return! Keep making people smile and poppin that hip!
My grandad ran away and joined the circus when my dad was really little. He played guitar and sang and was a great performer, really amazing with people, and eventually became a ringmaster for Barnum & Bailey. He came back to my dad years later and was able to build a good relationship with him- and us, his grandkids, too- and I have always loved having his example in my life. Forget what everything thinks or expects you to do: just go chase your dreams and make yourself happy. Never letting anything happen to those pictures of him. ❤
Your act is so funny and cool. Such a talented guy and a great voice. Have watched all of your videos and laugh and am entertained each time. Great going man.
Now I see why you were so good at radio. You should do one of those ASMR book reading for one of those sleep apps.
Merci Jacques! Viva la whipper
You and G have always been so inspirational. Love seeing you in Louisiana every year!
Thank-you for sharing. My husband owns two 10 ft bull whips and I cracked my first try in a 10 footer. It was amazing! I can do it left handed too. It is so much fun.
Of course it makes sense now. Definitely have the voice for radio 🎉❤
Loved this, and the message at the end. thanks, it was actually really what I needed to hear right this second.
I so want to know how you convinced your wife to marry you after hearing this story, and knowing she does not like your newscaster voice.
Um have you seen this man? His just 🥰😅
@@froozietvyou have a point there…
I've never seen you in person before. I can't wait to see in Colorado for my first Wippy Show!
Thank you for sharing. It was great inspiration for myself trying to run away and become a CZcamsr. Changing life trajectory is difficult (especially as you get older), but I like how you analyzed what work would bring you joy. I need to start looking at it the same way.
I saw ya at Sherwood Forest Fair about 10 years ago and have been waiting for your return to the Austin TX area. Come on back, JACQUES!
No way- Jacques was at Sherwood? Which stage? I would *love* to see him come back there! If the March/April schedule doesn't work for him, there's always grown-up summer camp in June...
Going to miss your ren show. But I hope that you have great life.
I think you just changed trajectory of my life. Thank you.
oh my goodness, watching this is reminding me of how insane 2015 was, when we hit record low temps across NA. My French teacher at the time was in that Boston marathon and it's still crazy to me that it happened. I loved hearing your story!
This guy is awesome! I love his shows! Well done sir!
You need to come to the Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire, Southern California. April through May.
Im sad that i missed you KBUR/NPR gig, bit im glad to see your stuff on my social media. Congrats
I'm in a transitioning period between career plans too and the uncertainty has been stressing me out in the last few weeks. Your video, especially what you said at the end, has been very encouraging. Thank you~ truly
Your success is well earned, and thank you for keeping me entertained!
Definitely try out for next Captain America or another superhero
I'd love to hear more about your time in radio. I work as an on-air personality myself, and I love geeking out with other voice performers.
Your voice is golden!! Your renfaire show is everything!! Love to see you live in person at a show. We have a Renfaire show in Holly, MI. Love to see you there!!
You and G are truly inspirations for pursuing your passions. No matter how many times I hear it, I always love this story and you have inspired so many of us to follow our passions and try new things as well.
I went to school for archaeology and in my country you can easily get a job, but working your way up is a lot of hard work and even before finishing school I realized I didnt feel excited to do that. And the negatives of the job made me lose a lot of excitement for archaeology as a whole. I did however fall in love with something I never thought I would like: data analysis. I loved nothing more than taking the results of an excavation and analyzing them, but I found it really annoying how much of it end up coming down to interpretation and how often you lack a big enough data pool to really say anything of value, so a career in data analysis it is. And as a bonus there is way more money in it lol.
I am currently in Radio and it is way cool to hear your story. I have been watching your sorts for a while , Thank you for sharing!
I miss hearing you on WBUR in Boston but you should do what brings joy to you. I saw you at King Richard's Faire and marvelled at the crowd you attracted for your show. Happy for you!
Bro, what a trajectory! Great story, real life usually is. Thank you! Happy for your success and happiness!
Inspirational. ❤ I think this is such a great message for people who are worried about how to reinvent themselves. You can always start new. Can't wait to see you in Larkspur again!!
(And I so want to run away and join the circus. I do lyra, but definitely need the full-time job to fund training. Some circus can be so expensive.)
Very enjoyable podcast, Jack! I would love if you did more like this, telling stories about your travels and experiences.
I'm 31, and I needed that message at the end. Thank you for giving me hope today ❤
Love the story. I admire your work ethics, dedication and passion to keep going. As well as have the bravery and self awareness to know what you want and make that change. Hard work = blessed life. Good for you.
Thank you for being so open, illuminating a career path that is not a straight line.
That’s something I personally have struggled with.
Great story, Jack! Loved the FLARF nod. Thanks for sharing!
What a fascinating story. I am glad that you always followed your heart. Very refreshing. Thank you for sharing. Keep going strong. Greetings from Germany. 🖤🖤❤❤💛💛
I saw you in july 2022!! My first Renaissance, I loved it and quickly found you on social media.
So inspiring! I absolutely love this! 💚💚💚
Holy Cow, I apparently heard you on WBUR all the time when you were there. Neat. What an interesting journey, thanks for sharing.
Love what you do! Thank you for choosing wisely
I truly want to see you in person hopefully in Maryland. I enjoy your Utube videos and can’t wait for new ones. Thank you for sharing your story. ❤
Wow I've totally been wondering this as long as I've been watching thanks for sharing your story I can't believe I missed you in California this year but next time I'm totally there❤
