  • A video shot in Cab with a Drivers eye view heading North out of Looe to Coombe Junction where the service reverses before climbing up to Liskeard. The County of Cornwall in the UK is one of Britains finest for scenery and don't forget the Pasties!
    This Video was shot using the excellent Garmin Virb Ultra camera and a suction cup. A link to the products can be found here.

    This is one of the most charming small branch lines to explore and its well worth the effort if you get the chance. Warning though, if you go into Looe and buy yourself a Cornish pasty watch out for the gulls, I saw one take a whole pasty out of a man's hand while he was trying to eat it!

    Combe junction halt, if you carry on from there you go under a viaduct and arrive at a production plant. The rail traffic going over the viaduct is about 30 seconds away from Liskeard station. Also coming from the other direction Liskeard viaduct which the line passes under, the rail traffic passing from right to left going over the viaduct is about 20 seconds from Liskeard station.
    So the incline away from Coombe Junction is basically a huge loop because the line has to gain a lot of height.

    I like the video very much of the return journey from Looe to Liskeard but I would like to also see the original journey from Liskeard to Looe in the same that you managed to cover this portion in your video of the St. Ives Bay Line. I say 'original' and 'return' because from having caught this train myself I know that most people who visit the branchline tend to first get the train to Liskeard from where they change to access Platform 3 for Looe trains, after all Looe at the end of the line is the holiday resort town destination. As nice as the line is, one thing to be aware of it does get flooded easily as the line follows the path of the former Liskeard and Looe union canal itself was used for carrying the cement, so the Looe section is virtually built on the river bed. Luckily it 'just' managed to be saved from closure under Doctor Beeching's plan

    I did the branch in June 2017, very scenic. I wonder if the Brightlingsea branch would have looked similar. Natural sound would have been better...

    Interesting that Liskard Station is a dead end. Where does it connect with the main line. Or does it even connect? I read somewhere that the branch wasn't physically connected. And if that is the case how do they do stock transfer. Also is the line to Moors Water still open?

    • @RailMart
      @RailMart  Před 4 lety +3

      It connects before you enter into the platform at Liskeard Ground Frame and yes Moorswater is still open, one train a week, Usually on a Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday.

      The Looe line is platform 3, walk to start of platform, cross road, go through iron gate onto platform 1 .. simples. 😉

    I've developed a Train Sim 2020 version of the Looe branch (in the Railways of Devon and Cornwall) and never quite resolved the speed into Liskeard P3. During field trips and also in this video drivers did not slow to 5mph from the turnout to the chord towards the main line, instead gradually slowing to a stop from the previous 25 mph line speed as they approach they buffers at the end of the P3 line. My NR track plans clearly show a speed limit of 5 mph from the turnout to the chord onwards. Do drivers typically ignore this limit? Crawling along at 5mph from the turnout to the buffers does seem excessive and risk averse.

    • @RailMart
      @RailMart  Před 4 lety

      I have just looked at GW Sectional appendix (Page 271) and the 5 MPH applies to the Left turn out only, through the GF towards the mainline. The Speed indicator is actually incorrect and should therefore show a left arrow, it is 25 MPH into the platform.

    • @spoerers
      @spoerers Před 4 lety

      RailMart I wish I could post a picture of my NR chart, which clearly shows a 5mph limit into the platform from the turnout.

    Not a moan, I love the video, even the music, but for future reference a platform with a waiting room, ticket office and staff is a station. A platform, unmanned, with or without a shelter, is a halt.
