In the latest episode of the CrossFit podcast, Ricky Garard comes clean about testing positive for PEDs during the 2017 competitive season.
Garard talks openly about his four-year suspension, processing the repercussions of his actions, and how he has learned and grown from his mistake.
Seeking redemption, Garard is looking to earn his spot back on the competition floor to prove to himself, and the world, that he has what it takes to be a top competitor in the sport.
Garard will be eligible to return to CrossFit competition on Oct. 3, 2021 and will compete at the Dubai CrossFit Championship in December.

First off, pretty darn good interview by Chase. He pressed Ricky for some answers, was respectful, and didn’t show too much bias in favor of Crossfit (this is after all a Crossfit podcast.
There are two HUGE things I learned from this podcast this should be of concern.
    1. As of 2017 when Ricky got tested, athletes are not watched while they give their urine sample after making the podium. What’s to stop someone from taunting their sample with a mouth full of water, a small water bottle or fake penis (it’s a real thing). I think this is what Ricky was eluding to when he mentioned Mat looked to be trying to dilute or taint his sample by using his water bottle with gel (can’t be for certain and not passing judgement here just something to note).
    2. Once testing positive, Ricky did not get tested for 3.5 years. Wow. You are giving the athletes who test positive 3+ years to use PEDs, learn their cycles, gain strength, and prep for a comeback and not testing during that period. I understand their are financial constraints to the testing process, but this is a GLARING hole to their PED testing procedures. For USADA, you stay in the testing pool during your suspension and must stay clean during your suspension. Keep in mind USADA does not do CrossFit’s testing, it’s Drug Free Sport International (just something to take note of).
Is Ricky now clean? Maybe. But what was his incentive to get clean while not being tested? Are more athletes on gear? Does the testing come close to catching anyone who has good knowledge and coaching around PEDs? What are your thoughts?

@Thomas Paine that Mat’s body is at a higher level. Ideally, The idea behind them would mean you’ve reached your peak performance naturally, so you take them to push past your peak. Doesn’t negate hard work, because you still have to work hard when you take them. I’m assuming by your response you’re suggesting Fraser took them. I don’t think he did. I’m not naive to the fact they are in the sport. They are in ALL sports. Every deserves a second chance. Everyone deserves the opportunity to clean their slate and show they’ve changed. Here’s the thing though. Broken trust takes a LOT of time to rebuild. 4 years of relative silence about the scandal doesn’t do much to build trust. Doing the open workouts and boasting that you beat Mat and you woulda qualified, etc doesn’t do anything to rebuild what was broken. Continuing to be polarizing like that makes the divide bigger.
Trust takes time, it takes action, it takes consistency. Not just words on a podcast once or twice but continual, open dialogue, continual action both showing the change, and encouraging change in others/the sport.
I truly hope he is being honest and sincere. I hope he’s learned from his mistakes. I hope he makes it back to the games clean and proves he deserves to be there.

Thank you for the interview, job well done. I always wanted to hear Ricky's side and anyone else that tested positive for illegal substances . I was a little disappointed on how the movie was edited. Since Ricky took third there was a big focus on him. But if you do just a little research, you will find that game athletes have been testing positive for illegal substances since they implemented the testing procedure. They don't get that much attention since they do not podium in the games. Which it's aggravating. If they were going to talk about the issue on this particular movie, than actually talk about the issue. I was very annoyed with Castro's comment that the athletes who win "do it right" and the ones that do not, well; it doesn't matter because they don't win anyways. Seriously!!!! if they don't "win" who cares if they are "breaking the rules", C'mon.

Keen to see Ricky return to the games from a fellow Gong person. It would’ve been much easier to give up and not come back but to keep grinding for 4 years is a big thing.
I think if his experience shows anything it’s that if CrossFit are only testing athletes who podium and some of these drugs are out of their system if they stop a week before, what stops anyone else doing it until a week before the games. You think they’d be tested year round. Doesn’t give you much confidence that other people aren’t taking things and that he was the “unlucky” one to get caught.
Not to mention not being supervised whilst doing the sample could’ve easily tampered with the sample if he had wanted to.
I know there’s a lot of speculation around the CrossFit testing policy and why a lot of people speculate athletes are using.
Everyone makes mistakes but will be good to see his comeback. If anything you just hope after his experience they changed the testing policies as that is clearly flawed within itself. Reality is people shouldn’t dope but sadly enough in all sports it’s clearly prevalent so it’s about what you put in place to make it fair for everyone, test everyone at regionals the games off season etc. otherwise you’re always going to find someone that slips through the cracks.
But good on him for the interview and training hard to come back 4 years later. Good luck!

So Ricky still can not take ownership for his mistakes and says he trusted people he shouldn’t have trusted, while in the same breath admitting that he knew that the substances were banned at the time he was taking them. It’s one thing to acknowledge mistakes and move on, but I am not seeing any owning up going on here.
He then goes on to say that Mat dipping is suspicious because Ricky can’t even beat him when he’s (Ricky) cheating. Only small people will try to take away someone’s success because of their own failure. CrossFit fans deserve so much better!

I think he’d look more sincere if he offered an apology to all the athletes he competed against that year. He upset the flow of competition just by being there when he didn’t earn his spot. I don’t like that he said he made an apology but it never aired. It’s his job to make the apology to the right people. Not a blanket statement and hope someone plays it for him. I have a lot of mixed emotions over this. I do think someone who cheats deserves a second chance. However this interview felt slippery. I hope he is genuine and honest despite how he answered questions. I also feel he earned himself a quarterly drug test till he returned- none at all seems negligent. Overall I think it’s time to forgive and move on. Being ugly about this is no help to anyone. I think he’s taken a step in the right direction in taking this interview on.

Not a bad podcast, did not get too much from it, still think he (and his team) still acted like he was dumb to a lot of this, he took RAD140 which is a SARM, SARMS are explicitly a banned substance. I think at that age I would have tried to do exactly the same to be the best I can be to reach the top, however not the most ethical route cause I know how difficult it is to compete at that level without any boosters.
