This is one of the most powerful and heartbreaking songs ever written. I cry damn near every time I hear it. It makes me miss my wife even when she's next to me, makes me wish I'd kissed my granddad more, makes me want to be a better and more beautiful person. God, to be that kind of talented...

I listened to this song a few times in a row, called my husband crying tlling him how much i love him. Great song!
I see some people think this is boring? You have a right to your opinion but i'd like to offer my perspective: the way the lyrics interlock, the way repetition and variation (a trope in blue grass) anchor the song, the instrumentation and unique melodies, particularly with the mandolin and banjo, it's all so charming and poignant--i think this song is intoxicating, i'd love to slow dance to it.
I don't know, different perspectives have helped me appreciate songs, movies, books, etc after my first interaction.
I fully agree.......it's meditative and thoughtful.......music and lyrics are sublime and perfect. Those bored just need to slow down and "really" listen....
Scorpia161 I agree. This song could have been recorded by any number of new-fangled, keyboard-driven "indie rock" bands and it would not have nearly been as good. The instrumentation and the spaces in between the music are what makes this a great song.

As a professional musician, I find myself drifting away when I listen to music like this. It takes me back to some of the beautiful places that I have seen all over the world. Music is a love language. I love the Punch Brothers, Ben Howard, Bon Iver, Nickel Creek, and so many more. Do I personally sound like those bands? No. However, I appreciate the creativity that others possess because it helps me to think outside of the box and to get away from what it IS that I do. THE lyrics are beautiful and the melody is messmerizing. It is hard to imagine what the world would be like if everything had the same sound, same colors, and same presence. I always try to introduce my friends or other professionals to songs such as these. SO PUNCH BROTHERS IF YOU ARE READING MY MESSAGE, KNOW THAT YOU HAVE A HARD CORE ENDORSED HAMMOND ORGANIST AND ROLAND KEYBOARDIST THAT IS A FAN. We are from two different world's of music, but appreciation is appreciation, and you all stay on my playlist. Familiarity and Julep will never grow old in my book. Man I love listening to this when I'm driving down 64. I live on the East Coast in the United States and we have the most beautiful scenic highway that leads up to the mountains and it just looks absolutely gorgeous in the Fall.... and listening to this while seeing it........Let me just tell you.....pure bliss..... I am so glad I found this song so rhythmic and pretty.

I saw them debut this at the Savannah Music Festival in 2014. The performance was at the Trustees Theater (an incredible venue) and it was more like a symphonic performance than a rock concert. The audience was incredibly attentive, you could hear the music so clearly, no constant talking in the audience like at the Avett Brothers concert the night before. That isn't to say the audience was subdued, it wasn't, especially when the songs ended then the sound was akin to a football stadium, literally a roar. They are precise in concert the song is performed as written. No special affects, no electronic modulation, pure music from instruments to include the voices of the Thile and company.

I can't stop listening to this song. Seriously. I listen to it on repeat for at least 5+ goes at a time. Everything about it is beautiful. The lyrics, the meaning behind them, the instrumentals...gorgeous. Easily my favorite song right now. I'm basically obsessed, haha. I first heard it on the Acoustic Afternoon playlist on Spotify. And now, because of that, I was introduced to Punch Brothers, Nickel Creek, and Chris Thile's glorious mandolin. Love.

first time I've heard Punch Brothers and already in love with them.
These guys are awesome with these almost diminished sounding chords during melodic breakdowns, or un expected minor notes during a mandolin flourish...very pleasent, very cool.

Lots of great comments here about the craft presented in this song. The beauty is in the care that must be taken by the musicians to weave a precision within the seemingly simple song. The musicianship that groups like Punch Brothers offer is far different than most of the production-driven music of today. It is not everyone's cup of tea, but it is hard to deny the excellence. I agree with Scorpia 161 that a careful listen is intoxicating.

Oh my god, this song is just a treasure. Usually purely acoustic music kinda bores me, the sounds always seem so limited in this genre. Can't wait to hear the rest, see the tour, all the etcs. that come with being a fan who lives somewhat close enough to Chicago to make these wonderful concerts!
