Apart from a Jimi Hendrix or an Eric Clapton solo…I think Gilmour’s solo in this song is the greatest rock guitar solo of all time. It’s bad ass af without being over-the-top; it’s so refined and smooth and perfectly executed without being pretentious. It’s a perfect solo. It’s beautiful 💯
Mate, you're spot on there. It's sooooo good. Clapton's tones throughout the years have been my favourite, but hearing this again years later, this is the tone I am trying to find. Namaste x

The thing I got from this was how much note selection changed the way you sounded... when you played like him, you sounded like him but when you started playing in your style you sounded nothing like him even with his tone. I think it’s much more in that than in what gear and settings you use, that’s just there to bring it out more.
Yep, agreed - I think Gilmour playing a Gretch Country Gentleman through a Marshall stack, would still sound more like Dave Gilmour, than someone else borrowing Dave's guitar and having a go in Dave's recording studio through Dave's effects/mixer. As soon as the opening few bars were over, it just sounded like Chris Buck. It didn't even sound like Chris Buck trying to sound like Gilmour. Still, they both sound good, but not at all like each other.

Great stuff Chris! before I clicked, I thought I could give you a little grief for releasing a Gilmour video today after your earlier announcement today, Then I saw you playing your p90 revstar and was stoked. That's my favorite revstar and I didn't know you played one until you replied to my IG comment earlier this week saying its your most used revstar, Then I watched the video and learned tons of new stuff.... You, my friend, are firing on all cylinders.

Sgoobrmeht I’m a lefty, what p90 guitar would be reasonably priced as a starter? Harley Bentons seem great value? Second hand will be a challenge to find being a lefty, but I’ll have look. Cheers

Love this! I love it when it turns out that players whove become famous for one particular type of guitar,. from one particular brand ,.have used other brands on some of their iconic pieces of music. I think gear (although a lot of fun to discuss and debate,.) can sometimes overshadow hard work creativity. I love that Jimmy Page recorded most of Led Zeppelin 1 on his Telecaster despite being known for playing a les Paul, and that Gilmore recorded this solo despite being know as a "strat guy".
terry vick great observations and I totally agree! I love that most people associate the solo/ duet at the end of Hotel California with two Les Paul’s, when in fact it was played on a twin neck SG (Don Felder) and a Tele (Joe Walsh) ! 😎👍

Dude your Revstar is a beautiful looking and sounding guitar! Wow I always thought he used a Strat with out of phase pickups ( neck + bridge wired together ) I did have the heavy compression part right but could never get it right with my strat(s)......great video !!

I would just say in terms of ambiance, David Gilmour gravitated more towards delay than reverb. That said, this sounds hella good and really great video!

Sounds awesome well dialed.....I've just replicated it myself using the DBX160 and 2 x 1176 compressor plugins although I also added a very short slap delay which helped thicken the verb trails going to grab another comp pedal and see if this can be done live .

Holy fuck!! Old P90s or not, I’d say you nailed it.
Really cool vid. I just got a POD Go (basically helix but lower dsp) and what I’ve done is used the Cali IV amplifier which I believe is a MK IV Mesa. I’m using the same Yamaha Revstar 502 in bullet green I think. I’ve put the bass at 7, treble and mids at 6. I bumped the sag, hum, and bias to 7 to give it more of a real tube amp feel. I’ve added an LA studio compressor at the end of the signal chain and and LA studio compressor just before that in the limiter setting. I’ve used the standard Cali cabinet, with an 84 condenser mic at 1 inch. It sounds pretty good so far. I’ve not added the spring reverb yet but I will. I’ve noticed that I’m definitely getting that pop and a tone that isn’t far from the original recording. I’ve been listening to the original track over and over again, and while some parts the tone is spot on, I think in others, especially the 2 1/2 step bend there isn’t enough sustain to carry that note if you play it as gilmour originally did only picking once. I’ve also noticed at the end of the solo during the last couple bars that it sounds like it is much more heavily distorted. I don’t know if that’s because he had his gain set higher and was dynamically picking, or he had his volume rolled throughout most of the solo. I suspect it’s the latter, as the raked picking and sharp picked notes on the high e string in the midsection suggest he was picking fairly aggressively. I’ve painstakingly gone through this solo, as it’s one of those that I’ve always thought I’d played close to the original, but there’s always more to learn. When I feel that it’s at least 95% I’ll post a video of the cover. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Appreciate you cutting out some of the leg work for me.

I love the analysis.I would say what your hearing in the desk doesn't account for "Roomverb..Ingvie Malmsteen put lagre stacks in a small room to make it 'breathe'..And played outside the room with the door open..With (of all people) BobEzrin..That tone is just awesome for jazzy licks in a rock format..Well done ....The future of music is as bright as your good self....Kudos ..I subbed.
I have a Fat 50s in the neck of my strat and I can get the tone pretty close as well. Either way Gilmour tones are just fantastic.

From an audio engineering point of view, it’s very likely they actually used a 1176LN and a LA2A (or maybe LA3A) before the amp. If you want to try to reproduce it with an analog path only, you can always try with some pedals that emulate those compressor such the Cali76 and Effectrode PC-2A.
If I understand things correctly, then the notion that David was recorded "direct" as many sources claim is not really the case in the sense audio engineers would use this terminology. He just used two pieces of studio outboard instead of pedals to run straight into a Mesa amp with maybe the guitar going via the desk into those compressors but basically as an expensive patchbay. But the end result is still hearing just the sound of the Mesa with super fancy processing in front of it.
The important point is that it is a Les Paul with the P90 pick ups, not the humbucking typical Les Paul sound but the P90s - these are single coil and hence the confusion with the Strat single coils. But a Les Paul with single coils is a bit like a fuller Strat sound due to the better sustain from these guitars.

You can still manage it with a Strat, especially with neck neck/mid pickups, and a Electro Harmonix Ram's head big muff. I do pretty well tone wise with my Strat Plus lace sensors. Again, the Ram's head big muff helps a lot too. I've only been noodling with it and might get a bit more serious with it soon. Such a cool solo and deserves to be done proper.
Gonna give it a go with my Jazzmaster/P 90s when I get it back from the shop.

Fun fact, Dave also used a custom double cutaway dual humbucker (Les Paul clone) on the solo for Money as legend has it, his Strats only had 21 frets at the time.

I have it on very good authority that Chris managed to hire Dave Gilmour's actual fingers from his local 'HSS Hire' depot, just for the purpose of this video, and even got them returned within 24 hours, so there was no penalty to pay. Gilmour will do anything to raise money for charity......

Wow I always thought that this solo was recorded with that white strat Gilmour has,I heard the odd rumour it was a Les Paul but this is great stuff to learn about,hearing that brick in the wall album on cd for the first time was me hooked on electric guitar for life,thats a very hard sound to emulate.

I had a Yamaha Revstar 520 with P90’s and it was £525 I think and it was my favourite sounding rock/blues guitar. I sold it when I was broke if anyone is curious.
And all this time I though that solo was cut on a Strats neck pickup. But my ears are shot.

"She's not There". You will see how he created the "Smooth" sound in 1978 with a Strat!
It's the P90 pick ups that lead to confusion. (- these are single coil not humbuckers)
@@GordonZoot it is easier to bend a note 2 and 1/2 tones, release the bend and raise the note back up one tone with one pick stroke..... and sustain & vibrato the notes using a Gibson Les Paul.

People who research David Gilmour's tone invariably end up on gilmourish. That site is a treasure. I like to believe that even David himself sometimes visits the site, when he's trying to remember what gear he used way back when.
As I understood it the sound was an early example of re-amping as well. In other words the solo was already laid down on tape. It was recorded through a D.I. box on if whose functions is to impedance match the high output impedance of a guitar pick up to the low impedance inputs of a mic preamp. After recording, Gilmour thought the tone sounded too thin and the solo was subsequently played back from the tape through the console and out to the guitar amp rig in the studio. I'd therefore say that another element you haven't taken into account is the warmth of tape, its bass bump, as well as the effect of tape compression. Also what we don't really know is there was probably a blend of several tracks in the mix DI, reverb and re-amp to achieve a difficult to analyze and replicate blend. That's a great sound by itself.
A lot of people use delays, but if you listen closely, it's not delay. I think you need to have more gain, reverb, and more high end eq.
Every music score version of this solo is different. It can take some time going through them. Some have a reverse bend and some don't, one may have more string muting or a different kind of muting. Basically it is a pick and choose, but do not be afraid to make your own changes to it. Even ones perception of the solo will be different, but there is that one version that even Gilmour himself would not be able to reproduce simply because it was a different version of him playing.
But the first 7 notes played by Chris are really 4 notes, plus a triplet groove or swing. There is detail within detail in the wall solo...
But I would not try too hard get the sound so... right. Some versions of the solo sound perfect, but lack the feeling. So u need to inject oneself into it, basically to inject oneself into oneself. Ultimately it is about the feel of the solo rather the neediness of getting it right, or in other words to desire to impress for essentially we are alone in the world, maybe another brick in some institution that we are not conscious of invisible walls.
Though it does work in its own unique way even with an acoustic guitar, which the P90 was a juxtaposition of in the same way that tele was a juxtaposition of the P90. Uhhh.. Huh..

that sounded great, I do a very similar thing but add a bit of a clean boost, I think it sounds more like the solo, just enough so you can kind of here a little bit of the boost and that for me gets very close
Cheers Chris, sounds good to me, maybe a tape saturation plug in for a bit more warmth and harmonic jiggery pokery, but hey, you have to stop somewhere. Wonder how loud it was monitored at as well, for a little guitar/speaker interaction. Oh dear, nerd mode engaged, I do apologise. :)
From my experience, the 502 P90s run hot and quite trebly at full volume. If you roll them off to around 7-9 depending on the amp they sound more akin to a traditional Gibson P90. That being said, when gilmour plays the first 2 1/2 step bend he only picks once and it sustains quite well for the remainder of the section. That’s the part I can’t figure out. When I play it I lose clarity and volume about half way through the bend. I suppose it could be that he gently picked the note again somewhere in the middle of the bend, or more likely that since this was recorded dry and later recorded through an amplifier that they equalized the levels in post production. I’m not sure. I’m still trying to figure that part of the solo out. The easy route would be to pick it mid way through, but I’m too autistic to settle.
