Shinee was built around Jonghyun. He didn’t like being called lead vocal but he was and gave lines away mostly to Taemin as he worked with him. He did write for Shinee, Taemin, other artist and himself. For Shinee he wrote for their vocal color stretching out the lines in a song better. Shinee was SM’s experiment (2008) changing the K-pop sound and range for the artist today. A true contemporary group. As someone who works in the Hwd industry I appreciate their story and the hard work it takes to maintain their level of performance. I love live stages because you can’t hide behind marketing and studio fixes. Shinee concerts are 3-31/2 hours long and Ring Ding Dong-Lucifer in this concert was the end of a section (half way point). ***I can’t wait to see the individual focus video’s when you do them.

    • @lilfreak.j
      @lilfreak.j Před rokem +3

i wouldn't word it "built around jonghyun"
minho was the first trainee to be set as part of the debut group.
SM really really wanted to debut another tvxq so when they saw the member selection at that time, they added jinki to the line-up to give them a very strong and unique vocal colour.
SM don't train their idols like YG does making them submit their own writing regularly and it was rare for SM to let artists participate in creative work early into their debut.
      jonghyun was an exception.

    • @lddean4534
      @lddean4534 Před rokem +1

@@lilfreak.j the group itself was different and changed. Once it changed its direction and became more vocal than rap Jonghyun was a natural choice to lead. Onew became 2nd lead which he said was best. Jonghyun had already had experience in his duet and would make them more unique. You’re right in saying originally it was a different direction and sound. Duplicating what was already established or creating something fresh is the risk that paid off.

If you noticed, SHINee was in energy conservation mode, especially Taemin because he had just done his solo, "Goodbye". In fact, Taemin got to the song late because he had to change, so Jonghyun picked up his first line. Then, midway through the song, Taemin said "Let's go". I think that was the signal that he was ready and then they all started to pick up on the dancing. However, then when "Lucifer" started, they went OFF and there was a flood of energy. You should really see the rock version of "Lucifer" at Tokyo Dome. It's AMAZING!: czcams.com/video/CuFl8BjMCKc/video.html
"Dream Girl" gave SHINee 4 successive award show wins, effectively causing the show to limit the amount of comeback songs for a group to just 3 wins thereafter.
Thank you so much, Chris, for doing our boys proud and appreciating them. I've always loved your reactions for SHINee and our guys' solo work. Hopefully we will get a Taemin album soon, and we can all geek out with his choreos and beautiful voice.
BTW: The entire "Hard" album is a masterpiece of showcasing their vocal skills.

There is a Dream Girl comeback stage in which SHINee Minho broke the mic stand in 3 places and were scattered on stage and Key, Onew, and another member moved the pieces away while not interrupting the choreo. They could've rerecorded but it was done so seamlessly that they didn't rerecord. You should look it up. There's videos that put the incident in slow motion so you could see the details. Also the video you watched didn't show you enough of the details in the choreo like Onew twirling around the moc stand like a cheerleading baton or when the members move the stands around to perform certain dance sequences.

Jonghyun had a beautiful and powerful voice that was perfectly controlled combined with great musical sensitivity, he felt and lived the songs and his interpretations were always poignant.
He was also a natural leader, in fact even though the leader of SHINee is Onew people often thought it was Jonghyun because the group leaned so much on him during interviews and in musical and career choices. He was extremely charismatic and it is evident from their live performances that he enriched with his improvisations also dictating the mood of the group's performances, which became more aggressive or soft depending on how he sang that day. An example is Lucifer, that day he had voice problems (at 3:35 he was voiceless and was helped by Onew) and so he sang very aggressively to help himself vocally, which also pushed the other members of SHINee to get more involved and improvise more aggressively creating an extremely enjoyable live performance.
Because of his musical sensitivity he preferred intimate songs but since he was the most vocally stable of SHINee he was in charge of the high notes together with Onew, equally powerful but more inconsistent, prone to error and unfortunately to damage his vocal cords (he also developed nodules that he had to remove and he couldn't speak for months, he seriously risked not being able to sing anymore).
Instead Jonghyn had vocal cords of steel, was vocally a laser, and also had an enormous lung capacity that he said he inherited from the women of his family, in fact his grandmother was a "mermaid", or a "haenyeo", one of the legendary female divers of the island of Jeju. They are one of the treasures of Jeju and are included in the oral and intangible heritage of humanity of South Korea.
Jonghyun was a natural feminist as he came from a highly matriarchal family, his grandmother was a Jeju "mermaid" (traditionally the head of the household in their community) and his mother was abandoned by his father, so he and his sister were raised with great sacrifices amid much humiliation by a single woman. His family misadventures helped him forge a very sensitive and empathetic personality but they were probably also the origin of his depression, which began even before his debut as an idol.
SHINee and the world have lost a very special and irreplaceable person, his death will forever be a huge pain to me.

Won't watch an hour of SHINee? Do you even shawol?😜😂 Lucifer was my babywol song and the first SHINee choreo I learnt...still have it down lol. What I love about SHINee choreo is that they often switch from hitting ithe beat to the melody and back again without losing the flow...from sharp/clean to flow. Tae is especially good at this..Advice is a really good example of this. My favourite bit is the little samba strut he does but then holds it an extra beat on the foward step to make the beat. I love the weird moves and awkward shapes that Key uses a lot in his as well. I'm primarily a Contemporary dancer.. although I've done hiphop, jazz and others.. Whatever who's paying wants.. lol...so I love when they bring that in..eg..Two Kids, Just Me and You Taemin..and Good Evening SHINee.. I think my favourite choreo is Juice atm though. Key shines the most on his live performances. If you want to hear legendary vocals ...Onew and Jonghyun's duet.. Please Don't Go.

"Ring Ding Dong" -- which is a classic in the Kpop industry that originally was released in 2009 -- was the opening song of that set. Right before this, Taemin had performed his solo song "Goodbye (Sayonara Hitori)" while the other members were changing their clothes, so if you notice, you don't see him in the beginning because it took him a little longer to get redressed. However, you can still hear Taemin's voice in the beginning of the song because he was actually singing his lines while finishing getting ready from backstage. You see him pop up from underneath the stage and join them a few seconds into the performance. That's how good they are at what they do. They still give 110% no matter what, and sound perfect even while multitasking. ;)
And, if you watch this full concert, you will see that their "Ring Ding Dong" and "Lucifer" set is about 1 hour and 20 minutes into their 3 1/2 hour concert. This just shows you how powerful they are from beginning to end.
Their performance of "Replay" was actually the last song in their opening set -- about 28 minutes into their performance -- where they had just performed 5 others songs right before this. That is why they look so sweaty. They started the concert with: "Hitchhiking," "Married to the Music", "Why So Serious", "Juliette", "Prism" and then "Replay." You've seen several of these MVs, so you know how intense the choreography is, and yet, look how flawless they still sound when they sing "Replay."
If you think these performances are good, just wait until you see a full set or the full concert, czcams.com/video/GVo4BqXy-T8/video.html. :D They are impressive when you see them perform one song, but when you see how much passion and energy they use for a full set, and even a full concert, and still are able to maintain stable vocals while singing live the whole time, you will be even more blown away.
This concert was SHINee's SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) in Seoul, so it was in 2016. You can tell this concert is in 2016 because Minho has gray hair, which means this was during their "1 Of 1" promotions, which was their title track from their comeback in 2016. You will see they have the same look and style in their "1 of 1" MV. Minho dyes his hair so infrequently, and each of the member's hairstyles usually change so dramatically for every comeback because of their effort to continually be trendy, that you often can tell what era something is part of just by the members' hair colors and styles.
This was their 5th world tour -- and at this point they had already held more than 100 concerts in their career. So Onew and Jonghyun were about 27, Minho and Key were about 25 and Taemin was around 23.
If you are impressed with Jonghyun's long high note in "Lucifer" -- which is about 20 seconds long -- just wait. Jonghyun is known for his amazing vocal abilities that is why he is considered one of the BEST vocalists of all time. What you just heard is normal when it comes to Jonghyun, especially when he performs live. However, although Jonghyun has some impressive high notes, it doesn't even come close to what Onew can do. Check out Onew's performance of "Friend," where he broke the record for the longest continuous note without changing tone or pitch, at 40+ seconds. All the members of SHINee can hit impressive high notes. Even Minho who is the main rapper and the one with the deepest voice out of all of them, has been known to hit some amazing high notes on occasion. SHINee are considered vocal powerhouses for a reason.
What you just heard was the remixed version of "Ring Ding Dong" and "Lucifer," so you may have noticed they were a little different than what you heard in the MVs for both of these songs. SHINee never performs a song the same way twice, so it's always a new experience no matter how many times you have seen or heard them perform the song. That's why SHINee concerts are considered one of the best concerts in the world.
SHINee live are always 300 times better than any of their studio recordings, and it's almost guaranteed that if someone doesn't vibe with one of their songs right away, the minute they see them perform it live, they gain a whole new appreciation for he song and it almost always becomes their new favorite. It's called the SHINee effect. That's why their live performances are considered the top in the industry.
What you just experienced is why, even as rookies, SHINee was so highly respected by everyone, including their seniors. Their live vocal ability while performing intense choreography was something no one else was doing at the time, and people were blown away by how perfect their singing and harmonies were. Even still today, SHINee is the group that everyone looks up to and wants to be like.

I should have also added this.
Jonghyun to me is probably the best male vocalist I have ever heard to this day 7/15/23. (this includes world wide vocalists). What he could do with his vocals and I'm not just meaning the high notes. I read somewhere that he didn't consider himself a good dancer, but the performance value he brought, passion, emotions, and visuals his performance value was amazing. I can see him in all the members especially Taemin. I see Taemin honouring not only MJ but Jonghun and Rain and every other performer that Taemin looks up to everytime he performs. That is a tall order. His vocals I find impressive, one time listening to him singing and playing piano was so touching I teared up and I didn't understand a word, then I listened to same performance with English subs and well it was all over.
Onews vocals I love and he keeps impressing me every time I hear him. When they were covering IU's song on her show and Onew hit the last high note so softly was way more impressive than belting of any high notes. I thought IU was going to melt on the spot!
Min-ho's rapping.passion and singing really balances the group expesically the last 2 comebacks)
Key's vocals, rapping and dancing are also outstanding. This last comeback I'm also seeing him in a new light. But his off screen character kills me. Love his interactions with the other members.
The way they tease each other one can really see how much they love each other.
Love 5HINee!!!!! And I only discovered them in the fall of 2022.

Fantastic SHINee series, really looked forward to what sort of compilation you would have the next day! Hopefully there'll be more in the future because there is an endless amount to discover with SHINee. Plus Taemin will have an album out this year so :))

If you haven't seen the live concert version of dynamite yet you should even Jonghyun was shocked when minho took his shirt and jacket off and did the rest of the song without them. (Ripped off which he wasn't supposed to do) Onew has to nudge Jonghyun to sing as he was to sing next.

I can pick out Key, Jonghyun and Onew easily. Their voices to me are more distinct. Taemin and Minho’s voices sound more generic to me.
