It's not always the song or your reaction to a particular song or artist that may help someone. Its your story and the experiences you've had throughout your military and civilian life and the things you go through on a daily basis that may reach someone and let them know that they are not alone and they can reach out and seek help if needed. Don't worry brother, what you are doing with your channel is completely worth it. If you reach just 1 person then what you are doing is a success.

Welcome to the first step down the Ren Rabbit Hole. I would encourage you to delve through his catalog, he has a HUGE amount to offer. I would recommend checking out Sick Boi or Chalk Outlines next. You will find resonance with both.
So that you know about his background: Ren was signed to Sony in his late teens when he was heard busking in Bath, UK (street performing) and was cutting his first record when he became ill and was diagnosed as having Myalgic Encephalitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), and Mast-Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) among others, as well as being misdiagnosed as Bipolar, and having Depression, and Anxiety. .
It was not until about 6-7 years later in 2016 that he was correctly diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Due to the time that had elapsed without correct treatment, he's had permanent damage to both his brain and immune system, and at one point was literally spending almost 24 hours a day in bed. During that time he had to end his contract with Sony because he was only able to sporadically record in his bedroom. The experience left him with medical PTSD from struggling to be heard while being misdiagnosed and mis-medicated.
He received a stem-cell transplant in 2016 that enabled him to become much more functional, but he is still receiving treatment currently in Calgary, Canada to continue to improve his symptom management.
A lot of his songs hit home if someone has gone through any of these issues, and a lot of us have found a lot of healing from embracing his messages of persistence in the face of overwhelming struggles. I have never heard anyone who delved into his work say that they stopped or regretted the Process and Experience that is Ren. It is sometimes challenging, but always rewarding.

So, when I saw Ren did a rap retake of that Fisher track I was stoked, he did it so much justice! It's a great song for shaking off the day and having a dance in your living room!

Ren suffered for about 7 years with Lyme Disease that progressively dismantled his health (physical, immunological, neurological), before he finally was diagnosed and treated. He is still undergoing treatment to try to undo some of that damage. Based on your reaction, I recommend his song “Sick Boi” next. Ren is a skilled guitarist, songwriter, singer, rapper, music producer, and storyteller and has a wide variety of music up on CZcams. Many have gone down the Ren Rabbit Hole. Peace to you!

Thank You for your Service Sir and what you are aiming to do with your Channel, Liked and Subscribed.
Ren is Welsh was discovered at 19yrs old busking by a Producer working for Sony Records and almost immediately given a Record contract with Sony. Unfortunately within weeks of starting to make a record he got ill with Flu like symptoms and pain all over his body, unable too continue with the work he eventually had to return home and the contract expired.
He spent many Years stuck at home unable to do anything because of the illness, going to Doctors and Hospital appointments trying to find out what was wrong with him, he was constantly being given different diagnoses, all wrong, and being told all his pain and suffering was in his head, whilst being given drugs for his deteriorating Mental Health, because nobody could tell him what was wrong with him, this experience eventually did give him PTSD as well, being told all the time nothing was wrong with him when he knew there was. After 7 or 8yrs of this, and seeing multiple Doctors, Therapists, Alternative Homeopaths and all sorts of Quacks who said they could cure him, he was lucky enough to find a Doctor in Belgium who diagnosed him correctly with Lyme Disease caused by an Animal Tick bite.
This was 7yrs too late and the damage the disease had done was extensive, in this time he was unable to make much music as he was so ill but made video blogs about his struggles and posted them online, one was seen by a Doctor in the USA who offered him free Stem cell treatment if he could get to the USA. He spent 12 weeks in the USA getting painful treatment and when he returned felt better than he had for many years, he wasn't cured but was able to start making Music again, of course Some of this Music was influenced by his bitterness towards the Medical profession and big Pharma, but as he says in Hi Ren he has learnt to Soften and and is a very positive person
He's spent the last 7yrs releasing Music independently, he writes everything, plays all the instruments and produces all his own Beats and the Videos are all Directed by him. He Makes Music in lots different Genres and they are all of a High quality, he's even invented his own Genre, "Bardcore", his illness means he can only make Music and perform on his good days, so it's another reason why he's gone under the Radar for so long.
All through the the last 7yrs he has still been ill and not cured, his fans have raised money for him to have Specialist Treatment in Canada, over $300,000 at the last count, the undiagnosed disease plus drugs he was wrongly given for other misdiagnosed problems still cause him daily issues and they are trying to repair some of the damage, he has been there on his own without family or friends since January, and could be there until the end of the year getting daily experimental treatment. He has an amazing story and is a Humble person, and having been through so much this is why his fans are so protective and Loyal to him.
If you are interested in his story i suggest you watch an interview with him on Knox Hill's Channel. Hope that Helps if you managed to read it all 😆

For every song Ren has that cuts to the core like this one he has another that is light-hearted. Choosing the right song for the mood you're in is very recommended. His work with Chinchilla is particularly tough to listen to, but very beautiful as well.
In most of his videos Ren appears healthy and strong, but Ren's story of illness is not an act or a schtick. He has been very sick for a long time, and is still fighting for his physical and mental health to this day. He is not a wallower, he is a warrior. Look up a video called " 'Hi Ren' Premiers on youtube on the 15th December - 7pm GMT " that was shot in 2014, to see how far he has come physically. The video was uploaded right before 'Hi Ren' to serve as an introduction to his health problems, which are more than a decade old.
For another look at him from that time there is a video called 'Patience - Ren Gill - M.E.", which was recorded live in that same period. It's a nice song, and shows his positive mentality while dealing with so much adversity. Maybe these two videos could be a double reaction if you'd like. FYI - M.E. is Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, which was his diagnosis at the time, for his long misdiagnosed Lyme's Disease.
For more uplifting stuff, any of his work with Sam Tompkins or his band The Big Push are recommended. And his rapping and beat production are great as well.

Ren is therapy for so many from one song he helps so many people open up in ways therapists struggle to do in person.
First time i watched Hi Ren i had a panic attack but thought i needed to watch it again so i watched someone reacting to it
that was the best thing i could do i have watched many times since. One thing i think about this song is it needs to be seen
by every one even in schools after a certain age, because how many children kill themselves because of the negativity
towards them from nasty comments and bullying to them believing what is said. Born in Belfast during the troubles I went through hell, bullied all through school to the point i attempted suicide twice, and to many issues in my life since then I am a recovering alcoholic 11 years clean I suffer PTSD and other health issues so the majority of bad days over good is high, if this bullying had been dealt with i may have had a reasonable life not the existence i have to deal with now

Really appreciate your reaction to this masterpiece. New sub! Ren's music shows a lot of variety, but is most often very deep, emotional, genuine, and eloquent. There are many of his songs that address mental health issues - Sick Boi, Diazepam, Humble, Heretic, Depression, Insomnia, Crutch and Dominoes. There are also some more fun songs - Love Music parts 1-3, Genesis, Power, Hunger, Illest of Our Time, Animal Flow, and his busking with The Big Push (I shot the sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop) and Money Game 1 and 2.

  • @JensRandolff
    @JensRandolff Před rokem +1

This was a very enjoyable, genuine, and heartfelt reaction. I wrote this introduction to Ren when I first discovered him earlier this year, as there wasn’t a Wikipedia entry for people to look him up prior to March 2023. I have posted this info to every “Hi Ren” reaction I have come across since, and I hope it will be of some use to the uninitiated. “Hi Ren” is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered over 13 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day.
Ren is an independent artist/singer/songwriter/busker from Brighton, UK. He plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern-day bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on CZcams are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.”
Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal.
Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world.
Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right Here, Right Now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” "Hold On," “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake),” his recent release "The Illest Of Our Time," and his latest song “Animal Flow,” both the full production and the live acoustic version, just to name a few.
Ren's performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned It /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the Moon/No Diggity,” “Feeling Good/Trouble So High/Masterblaster (Jammin'),” “Latch,” “Wild Thoughts/Crazy in love (Live Session),” “Same Old Situation (Live, feat. Ren),” “Improvising Around Stevie Wonder,” “What Went Wrong” Part I&II) are definitely a must. Also, his collaborations with Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), Orlean ("Jessica"), his former bandmate Romain Axisa (“French Song”), are all great. Last but not least, Ren’s busking sessions with Liv Sangster are awesome. I recently discovered that Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful.
"The Big Push" (Ren Gill, Gorran Kendall, Romain Axisa, and Glen Chambers) busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are amazing and well worth checking out. All but the drummer sing lead vocals at times. Ren, Gorran, and Romain all play multiple instruments. Ren plays acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, and drums. Gorran plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, and harmonica. Romain plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, ukulele, and piano. They are each incredibly gifted artists, and their solo work is completely different from each other. Well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "Watch Out," “War Pigs,” “Roadhouse Blues,” "My Generation," “Paint It Black,” "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong” are awesome. On “These boots are made for walking’/Satisfaction/Everybody,” “Praise You” (Fatboy Slim Cover), “What Kind Of Woman Is This,” all three take a turn singing. The songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive.
The band, at least for the time being, performed their last official busking session and gave their last concert in September of last year (2022) due to the fact that Ren was leaving for Canada to undergo specialized medical care and surgeries for his multiple health issues.
In anticipation of his stay in Canada, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work. Ren released his song, “Illest Of Our Time,” on his birthday, March 29. His newest release, "Animal Flow," is out now in two versions, a full production music video, and a live, one-take acoustic version.
I still fail to understand how Ren's YT channel has less than 1 million subscribers while his videos have garnered millions and millions of views!?! What is wrong with people? I guess it is a sign of our times; this is a "me, me, me" society, and people just want to consume, unwilling to give back even as little as giving a video a "like" and subscribing to an artist's channel.

    Great reaction. Subscribed.
This is blowing up because so many people relate to it: either through the medical world, or by dealing with their other "voices" alone. We ALL have them. People have been talking about this mostly in terms of medicalized mental health, or creative processes, but it cuts across every single thing, every activity that people turn their hand to. There are always voices that tell them they aren't enough and shouldn't try. It starts with people outside, and we quickly take those voices and internalize them, make them part of themselves.
Ren is from a tiny village in Wales. Strongly recommend that you listen to his song, Dominos. It's a social critique that also addresses this.

Thank you for your completely honest reaction to how closely you could relate with Ren in this heartbreaking video. I, too, was hit hard by the vulnerability and transparency of how much Ren has been tormented by the voice that tries so hard to tear down his ego and confidence. I have been suffering from PTSD ever since I became a victim of some very sick men at the age of 12. The actual attack and what they did to me has been blocked out by my brain. This fact has created a chorus of voices in my head that have torn me apart over and over again. It took me almost 20 years to get help with the consequences that were caused by the unspeakable hell they put me through.
I wish I could have had someone like you and Ren in my life back then. I feel like I am finally blessed with the strength to eliminate the toxic voices that have tried to take away any light and goodness in mu life.

I never served in a military, but I have been trying to cope with PTSD and depression for as long as I can remember stemming from early childhood. I don't know what triggers your torment or what experience or experiences are at it's source, and it's likely very different from what still haunts me, but to some degree I think that our shared diagnosis isn't the only thing we have in common. A fractured soul can have many causes, even if the fracture itself may be a break along the same common lines.
Ren didn't break from violence, but I feel like he and I still have invisible scars in common. Pain speaks to pain. Torment has many flavors, but it can be felt across all spectrums. Ren isn't alone just as you and I aren't alone and nobody else is either. We are all One, and separation and differences are an illusion.

Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Erin Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990; he eventually moved to Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue; subsequently, his contract with Sony was dissolved.
Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure.
Ren is currently in Calgary, Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023) undergoing IV and other interventions five days a week. Ren recently underwent wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery. In addition, his Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD), which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Now, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition.
Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, if you are a content creator, ask your audience to subscribe to Ren. Listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to the world, and his work is important in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available.
Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. Ren has exceeded his initial goal. However, his goal was very conservative and did not reflect the added costs of unforeseen surgical procedures, and treatment for additional health issues such as MCAD. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

I can’t begin to imagine the trauma you have been subjected to as a survivor of war. I have nothing but the utmost respect for you and I wish you well with your health now and in future. Ren was in school with my daughter and I know the terribly sad situation he experienced at a young age when his best friend Joe Hughes took his own life. This was followed by Ren being misdiagnosed when he contracted Lyme disease but was treated for other things leading to permanent immune system damage and brain damage. He is currently in Canada having stem cell treatment but he will struggle all his life. However fortunately for us he has a plethora of brilliant songs of all genres be it on his own, collaborating with others or with his band The Big Push who are all individually brilliant performers also. Anyway sorry to go on thank you for the reaction. Rich from Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 UK 🇬🇧

Great that this song brings out such honesty with so many people about their deepest inner conflicts. What the world needs is more honesty about our feelings and thoughts about how to navigate this insane world. The line "Some people know me as hope. Wise words. Ren has presented a very powerful piece here, that is raw, vulnerable, and very honest. It has the capacity to touch most people who struggle with a negative internal voice,to varying degrees. But this speaks to what it is really like to experience a Psychotic Episode in all it's confusion, struggle chaos and terror.
I believe with this ONE song, beyond Artistic accolades, Ren has done more to educate, engage and capture public empathy, than the last 50 years of targeted Public Education Campaigns aimed at De-stigmatising Mental Illness combined.
    Be well all.

Ren had stem cell surgery in 2016 which finally helped with the Lyme and saved his life, once he was finally diagnosed. But the Lyme triggered MCAS, another autoimmune issue. So while he is better from the Lyme, the MCAS damaged the myelin in his brain and he is currently in Canada getting special brain treatments and intensive work to bring down his inflammation. Sadly, during the misdiagnose stage, they thought he was bipolar, from what I understand, and they just kept shoving meds at him for that. He has, and I believe still does, suffer from a great deal of pain.
What you described at the end sounds like the first half of his Sick Boi video.
You said you didn’t want to do just straight ‘feelings’ stuff so I’ll recommend a few of his more fun stuff to give you a break from the seriousness of Hi Ren.
    1) Losing It (Fisher retake). It’s a fun rap but he’s spitting the bars for sure!!!
    2) What You Want Not something normal for him but it is a goofy homage back to the Beastie Boys and the 90’s.
    3) Power.
    4) Hunger 5) Illest of Our Time. Flexing his rap skills
    6) Money Game 7) Money Game 2 - my fav (REN’s spitting Truth!)
    8) The Big Push: Watch Out. That’s REN’s band he was in. Choose the version of them performing their new song on the street (busking). It’s high energy!! Also, The Big Push had other original music and also did covers.
    9) The Big Push: Dignity gives a behind the scene look at them and their career and concerts.
Expect people to beg you to react to The Tales of Jenny and Screech (full). It is 3 tales, the third is Violet and you if you do the full set you are good. If you happen to select them separate, do Jenny first, Screech second, Violet third. That’s important. This is outstanding.
Sick Boi is also highly requested.
His newest release is Animal Flow. Maybe don’t do that one till you’ve seen some other Ren stuff first and you get him a little better.
When people go back thru his career, pre-band, with The Big Push, doing different duets and collaborations, and now they are pretty shocked at how he is good at so many different things. I won’t spoil that for you with details. Just know, unless he is doing a ‘retake’ (which is his own song over another music track), everything you hear was created and mixed by him, even the beatboxing you may hear in the track. He might have someone do some final part of the production but it is his work.
He does a number of live one takes. Hi Ren was one of them.
Oh yeah, one more thing that may come up you’ll wonder about. When he was 18 (give or take) he signed a contract with a producer that was under Sony. While he was working on his first album, he came down with the Lyme and got very debilitatingly sick. He couldn’t work or get out of bed. After about a year, the contract time limit was expiring and he mutually agreed with them that he just couldn’t do it right now and they should part ways. It was hard for him, in his 20’s to not only be deathly ill but to also feel like his ‘big chance’ was lost. Now record labels are re-approaching him but he is choosing to stay independent so he can do his own creative work, as he chooses.
I hope I’m telling it right. I’m not an expert. Just started following Ren about 3 months ago myself. I love watching reactions because I feel like I am learning so much or just thinking about things differently.

This is my understanding- he got sick, but was misdiagnosed, and spent years thinking his illness was mental. He thought he was battling forces of evil, but that was just his conclusion from his misdiagnosis. He learned later that he was actually sick- he had lyme disease and something else, there was no Goliath for him to defeat. The thoughts that he argued with was the pendulum, the experience he had was human, not medical. Everybody has these voices, these thoughts, this struggle. But he learned to respond reflexively- to dance- and in doing so, he has begun moving forward, with his "shadow ego" at his side.
