Is mouse accel actually an aiming cheat code?

  • Hi! If what I said at the end of the video sounds appealing to you, you can download rawaccel here - github.com/a1xd/rawaccel/rele...
    If you feel like this vid looks a bit familiar, that's probably for two reasons. I've made a video on accel in the past, but I didn't completely agree with the conclusion I came to and thought I set out my arguments rather poorly, so I decided to remake it! I'm also working on remaking the upscaling tutorial video and the one I made explaining my speed sheet, so if you're wondering where those went, they should be back up in a better form soon :D
    The next reason this video might look familiar is that the entire vibe of the thumbnail is stolen from pinguefy's accel video LOL this isn't a callout or anything like that, pingu and I are besties and actually agree almost entirely about mouse accel now, they also gave feedback on my writing and helped me choose the music for this! The thumbnail is just a nice homage to a vid I appreciate a lot ^^
    Also, sorry about the delay between vids. Between finishing school, being forced to scrap a video and working on other projects I didn't have too much time to make a vid that I was proud of. I'm done with school now tho so it shouldn't happen again c:

    hi!! something I should have clarified in the video is that when I briefly talked about how I went back to accel but turned it off after a bit, I tried plenty of other curves and types of accel throughout that time period for weeks at a time and my opinion on accel didn't change. It felt tangential to include at the vid at the time of writing but looking back I can see that it would have been absolutely worth mentioning. I think that what I say here is applicable regardless of accel curve for the most part, barring a few exceptions like sarahfrags' accel which is so subtle that what I say doesn't really apply.

      I just use an uncapped linear curve as It is much easier for my brain. Any exponential or other non-linear curve would give me the same problem as you said.
      And I primarily choose mouse accel for comfort issue. I use it globally and it is actually especially helpful for working (for example CAD). Mouse acceleration were actually implemented for productivity, not gaming. Using mouse acceleration reduce a lot of wrist and arm fatigue and I can play games without 'battling' my mouse.
      Here is my config:
      > Acceleration : 0.25
      > Cap Type : Input
      > Cap Input : 0
      > Input Offset : 0

      If I understood the essence correctly, you're saying that using rawAccel can help improve aim to a certain extent. I'm trying it out and I have a few questions:
      What about the rAccel settings for flicks and for tracking? Do they differ?
      Do you use Input offset?
      And in general, what were your rAccel settings?

    Such a valuable video. I get sooo many questions about whether or not it's useful to use rawaccel. When I tried it early in my aim training journey, I couldn't put into words what felt "weird," mostly that it felt like an artificial fix that didn't feel like my own aim and my own speed. Since then, I haven't touched it, but now I can understand what exactly I was feeling. I bookmarked this, so I can share it with anyone who might be wanting to try rawaccel.

      The middle 40% of gamers are going to benefit from mouse acceleration because most people don't have the neural reflexes to be a top 10-5% trick shotter.
      Either way, mouse acceleration in Fortnite is legal and allowed and thus it is only fair for it to be allowed with a mouse, people who hate on mouse users are honestly trash. It's not anyone else's fault that it's bar none the best way to play FPS and third person games.

    I've used mouse accel for years, ever since I learned about it from Pinguefy's video in 2020, and yet, by now, I've quit using it. And just like you, I don't regret using it: before I started playing with accel I've had a very wrong understanding of muscle memory and overall mouse sensitivities. Learning mouse accel made me understand that it's not necessary to always stick to a single sensitivity, as well as I've understood that you don't need the same sensitivity across different games or even different roles within a single game. Now, I can see it's issues that could've been tampering with my progress in the past, so now I'm using a static sens, and I'm fine with it.

  • @xzraiderzx308
    @xzraiderzx308 Před 6 měsíci +1

    This video was great and put into words a lot of the things I was feeling and went through as well, but with one key difference. I started using accel about 2 years ago, before that in a couple of years I was gradually increasing my sensitivity from a painfully slow 60 cm/360 in the CS/ Siege days when I thought going as low as possible was best, to about 30 when playing Apex for extra maneuverability. Later being inspired by some high sens Warzone players I went balls to the wall and went 6 cm/360, shortly after which I started using 0% MDV instead of 33% and shortly after also decided to use linear mouse accel, but starting from 24 cm/360 that went up to 6. I'm not gonna lie, the first year I just couldn't get a feel for it at all, first months felt horrible, like I was learning to play with a mouse for the first time again, probably because I basically took everything I knew about aiming and threw it out the window, but the moments where it clicked felt amazing and I knew there was a lot of potential. I've been using that same curve this whole time, what you call the sarahfrags curve, it took a lot of training to get that 1:1 mechanical feeling back and I wholeheartedly related to what you said in the last segment, about elasticity with sensitivities and that spark of motivation to improve yourself. I still think accel is great, but it's just really hard to master because of that "learning multiple sensitivities at once" aspect, so it depends on if your experience gaming allows that flexibility. I've mellowed past my esports craze days and don't need to be hard on myself to outperform myself every match, but I still value self improvement above all so as a long term commitment, I believe accel is a great choice.

    I've just started using accel to turn for fast 180's (flashbangs or enemy behind) because I've been using the lowest sens that I can due to glasspad. I was struggling to be agile while having low sens and accel (jump & input 25) does it for me. I think accel (linear) can be good if a game only requires mediocre aim like battlefield, cod or battlebit, those clips you have with accel look like aimbot :). Linear accel in overwatch is specially worse because multiple characters have different speeds and you could be tracking from a distance with soldier 76 or tracking from close range with tracer and with accel you have 0 consistency in those regards. Just a bit of context first. Played no acceleration for ~6 years, then default enhanced pointer precision in Windows for 3 years, then no acceleration/raw acceleration for a few months, again over last 1-2 years. From what I've learnt is best is no acceleration or what I would call mild acceleration (sort of 20% increase in sensitivity when moving fast), that way you get a boost to fast movement close range without drastically damaging your ability to microadjust. Same reason I play usually 1.2x vertical sens for recoil.

It would be useful in the cases I need high DPI, as in turning 180 degrees with my low DPI isn't as effective so battle royales are harder to play with the constant 360 degree you could get shot at, compared to lets say pushing outside of A on CS would be a 90 degree turn in either direction cutting it down 4x. Although this seems beneficial, there are times where you would want to move slightly somewhere on screen, but very quickly. Mouse accel would exaggerate your movements doing this, so those old curves that *you wouldn't be able to make yourself* would deeply effect gameplay. Mouse accel definitely isn't for everyone, but hearing the changes to it is good. Fairly impressed with how well mouse accel and competitive shooting games have coincided.

    i think the issue that exists is a combination of how you aim and the curve you're dealing with. It seems solvable but maybe not preferable for everyone.

    for me, I've found opposite results. my flicks are generally poorer on accel and I've only enjoyed it for being able to do tracking better. I usually swap between using accel and not using it depending on the game, for example on csgo I won't use it but for overwatch or minecraft I love it. I've never considered "sticking" to accel for a super long period of time since I noticed that there are definetely cases where it could be better or worse. this is a pretty good video though, and I love the effort you've put into it!

    Although what you say is indeed correct, I still believe that raw accel has its uses. For instance, the rotation setting is really good for stabilizing aim; The angle snapping setting is also really good, and I can’t play without it after I’ve been using it for a while (Keep in mind angle snapping is not something you can change in the regular menu. You have to change the values in the files. [There are many tutorials for this.]). I don’t use acceleration anymore, because it’s almost impossible to memorize every the distance that your crosshair will move at each different speed (Idk how to explain this, but what I’m saying is that your mouse movements will never be as consistent with acceleration as they are without.).
    Thanks for reading my ramble.

Kind of makes sense that it ended up holding you back though.. as you grow as a player, your needs will change over time, so the extra control it offered you ended up turning into a double-edged sword because you had reached a point where you didn't necessarily need to rely on it anymore

    I use a duo sens curve. It's basically 4100 dpi at tracking speed and micro adjustments and doubles at flicking speed. It works wonders for me. Tracking is natural, 180s is a breeze and flicking accross a range is consistent. It's static at all times, it just doubles at a certain range and speed of movement, which you never do unless you want to flick to something far away or do a 180. I believe you can make mouse accel work for you. Especially if large mouse movements is uncomfortable.

    Okay your video is genuinely very well explained. You explained everything that I’ve experienced as well, I overshoot a lot and I’m extremely low sens tbh. I tried taking mouse acceleration off before when someone asked why I use it but I couldn’t adapt to it but I’ll have to try it again. I’m so used to mouse acceleration being on cause of me playing on lower sens but I sometimes feel that I turn way too quick when I don’t want that, especially with tracking. But sure it feels weird cause my aim is pretty good, but I can tell it’s probably holding me back. Especially saying that I wanted to adapt to higher sens as well, perhaps this may help? I’ve just heard that with league of legends it might be bad but I’ll try it for a week and see how it is. Thank you for the video, this is the best video I’ve seen on mouse acceleration without someone’s opinion being so one sided for once haha

    I love to see this kind of vids and comments. Although the issue I mostly see is that for static sens you usually have to find your main one and you are mostly set, but for accel you have to fine-tune every single point of that curve to match a similar result, but that requires countless of hours of recordings and log every single aspect of your setup, posture and energy that day. Not everyone is willing to do such things, and that's perfectly fine. And yes, when you change the friction of your mouse (either by changing mouse, mat or skates) you have to adjust something in your accel.
    Also, when you train with a static sens it is way easier to analyze things, because you can go slow but accurate (like in music, you start to learn a new composition with a lower tempo). But for accel, oh boy, you HAVE to go full-tempo and get smashed. In the beginning only video recordings can help to debug what part of your curve is failing.
    I've been using raw accel (and before that inter accel) for at least 5 years now (ngl I actually forgot for how much, my notes starts from 2019 tho), with few months of breaks here and there to test different static sens mainly to debug the curve I had at the time.

    I used mouse acceleration for decades and still prefer it. The problem was, at least in the past, if this isn’t still the case, not all games supported it. Lots of games would ignore your mouse driver and use the raw input data, so you couldn’t use acceleration in those games. For the longest time all I was playing was Counter-Strike anyway, and it supported using it perfectly. Then in 2009 iRacing got a hold of me and I basically stopped playing everything since I found racing more enjoyable by then. And then PUBG came out. Now I split my time between it and iRacing. I was pissed that PUBG seemed to be using the mouse directly rather than using the driver input dats, as acceleration was missing. I adapted, but would still prefer to use the same acceleration that I’ve been using since Quake came out. Heh. I can see why different people prefer each way. Some people can get used to how acceleration works and some people can’t. Some people will be better with it and some without. I’ll go you one better: I’ve been using a trackball since Unreal was released, and specifically the Microsoft Trackball Explorer since it was released. Using a mouse is so much worse than a finger-operated trackball. ;)

I also experienced a similar trajectory, but in my case it was more of a cycle. aim feels shit -> try a curve on raw accel -> I'm the god gamer -> aim feels shit again -> turn off raw accel -> god gamer -> back to square one
    I really don't think the cycle hurts me in the long run, it does spice things up tho and that has a value onto itself

    It's funny because I started to see people talking about mouse accel is cheating in valorant. In acuality, it's worse and only preference. When I was younger, I use to play on mouse accel without realizing it for all my life. I never knew what it was until I started playing csgo and looking up settings. I was pretty good but I had trouble staying consistent and couldn't figure out the issue. When I realized what mouse accel was and turned it off, I started getting better. I eventually realized mouse accel was only good for me half the time because the low-sens part was throwing me off while the high-sens acceleration was the portion that I really liked. After years of constantly switching sens, it seems that high edpi is the best for me. As you said, I just use my arm to flick far but largely use my wrist for anything and micro adjustment. But again, if mouse accel works for you, or you just like it even if its not the best, then go for it.
    So for anyone who has trouble finding the perfect sens. Understand this: try arm and wrist movements. If you're more comfortable moving your mouse with your arm all the time, then you're likely a low sens user. And if you use your wrist more often, then try higher sens.

  • @d9tach
    @d9tach Před 8 měsíci +3

    An interesting application of accel I've seen is as a mobility boost for low sensitivity players in games like valorant. By setting a high input offset, it essentially allows you to have a linear curve for most gunfights but also make 180 turns and wide initial flicks without as much rotation of the arm/wrist. Unrelated, but what do you think of the Viper V2?

    • @ViscoseOCE
      @ViscoseOCE  Před 8 měsíci +1

      i actually had written a bit about that into the script! I think i called it the sarahfrags accel curve haha, and yea it honestly does seem to negate a lot of the downsides I talked about. I can def see it impacting training regardless, since going slow and speeding up is still thrown off by that type of accel curve. For me personally, that increase in sens was either too small to be beneficial or put me into stupid high sens ranges bc I'm a higher sens player generally. As for the viper v2, i liked it! bought it for some modding stuff a while back but i used it for a bit first and enjoyed it, but the clicks were def a bit heavy but the shape felt nice and the build quali was great but didnt stick with it for long bc of my smaller hands

    I think specifically, mouse acceleration will almost always outperform static during gaming. If you try using mouse acceleration for aim trainers you’re fighting a losing battle considering that the majority of aim trainer one tricks use specific sensitivities for specific scenarios. This is also the reason many one tricks can’t adapt to the game of their choice because they would rather chase a higher score/improve mechanics than get better at the game. Having to not worry about your mechanics as much and focus more on the other aspects of the game you play will always let you improve much more than leaning so heavily on mechanics that you simply play dumb and take every duel.
    The routes you choose are as follows:
    Try out mouse accel to focus on other aspects of the game. Maybe you’ll become a smarter player but whiffs the kills you need to get.
    Don’t try mouse accel and stick to just aim training while waiting for a game to be made that will reward your mechanics (it will never happen because of how niche and unprofitable it is)
    Don’t use mouse accel and have a good balance of both aim training and gaming. It will probably take you a quarter of your lifetime to get to the same level as the top 100 players in your region unless you’re able to do it full time. Realize you can’t do it full time and decide to just play the game for fun
    Start playing other games because the FPS genre is dying from how much of a handicap devs give to the not so dedicated players so they can at least have a little fun. Realize every game has a massive flaw and you nitpick and tear apart every game that has even just a little bit of luck attached to it (COUGH no 100% accuracy on first shot COUGH) it’s time to download Slime Rancher and flick/track the slimes from muscle memory and your brain still craving for that perfect game to come around. The beast inside you begins to hibernate.

      im curious, what makes you say accel will almost always outperform static sens in fps games? i can def see what u mean with it being worse in aimtrainers, but i noticed improvements in aimtrainers and in games from turning it off. I also found sort of the opposite from what u said about aimtrainers not translating, for me I found that since i have strong underlying mechanics I can completely ignore them when picking up a new game and focus entirely on learning the specifics of the games mechanics/positioning. def agree abt the current state of fps games tho :((( the finals gives me hope at least

    • @FalseF4CZ
      @FalseF4CZ Před 8 měsíci +1

       @ViscoseOCE All FPS games was a bit of an over-exaggeration for laughs but for tactical FPSes, I can see how mouse accel would be highly beneficial since the majority of players play on such low cm/360. Games like those only really require very strong pre-aiming, click timing, target switching, and being able to do at least a 180 quickly. You're a bit of an outlier considering you have the time to aim train and the grind has gotten you to where you are now which is amazing to see. You fall under the top 99.99th percentile of any FPS game you touch though because of it. Many if not the majority can't achieve what you did and they won't ever be able to because of the lack of dedication or time.
      My mouse control was developed over time and I was constantly using sens randomizers to make my sens flucuate from 0.5x to 2x the speed I'm used to. I used to be able to comfortably play on anywhere from 100 to 30 cm/360 but since I recently have little to no time (roughly around 3 hours a day) I ended up defaulting back to around 100 cm/360 because it's just less upkeep on mechanics and I can play a couple of tasks and hop straight into any game or just hop straight into a game. Because of the low sens though I'm currently using RawAccel with the settings:
      Sens Multiplier: 1
      Y/X Ratio: disabled
      Rotation: 0
      Linear
      Acceleration: 0.035
      Cap Type: Output
      Cap: Output: 100
      Input Offset: 20
      Valorant In-Game: 0.18
      Mouse: 800 DPI, 1000Hz, Pulsar X2H 2
      This allows me to use 0.18 for essentially all aiming tasks besides flicking away from flashes and doing 90-180 turns all of which I need to do quickly and return back to the same spot which RawAccel is there to make up for that. I only do tracking tasks now because that's really the only thing I enjoy and I love doing reactive tracking tasks, it also helps keep my reflexes in check. I'll do some small targets wide wall every now and then if I notice I'm struggling a bit some days.

    I've always steered clear of using accel thinking it was bad and have used raw input for as long as I can remember. Though my time in games has increased, my aim has just not been as good as it used to. I used to play on high sens (1300 or so) and consistently hit my shots with snipers and other such weapons but struggle more with smgs and medium to short distance fights. I have been using 500 - 700 dpi in recent years which has helped my tracking a lot better so I can do those medium - close range fights but now I'm not as quick with longer ranges (or people being too far to my sides lol), flicks and especially not in games with faster movement (like Overwatch and The Finals). Seeing this has brought up that accel really isn't as bad as I had thought and I think I should finally give it a go (at least for a couple months) so that I can aim to be more consistent and challenge players in faster paced games more confidently :)

    You can not use it to find the correct sensitivity for all situations that way.
    You need to consider being forced to move in any direction while tracking.
    I don't like to give tips like here are my settings, but I suggest three things.
    Try detraching one part of the training from aiming, try some quake speedrun maps.
    If you go back to accel, try a generous offset and do not accelerate more than 5%.

      I have actually tried a curve like that for a while, and actually wrote a segment into the script about it but cut it since it felt too disconnected from the core idea. My main few issues were that I struggled to flick, it wasn't as consistent as using a linear curve with a cap for me for flicks since the "flat" part of the curve had moved to cover the micros. I also ran into the same issue on that curve trying to train flicks as I did training micros, I couldn't start slower and get faster since my sens would change when I increased my speed. I also found it a bit hard to choose a suitable sensitivity for it, I played on around 30cm/360 base and increasing from there didn't rly provide any speed benefits, especially since I use my arm to flick primarily. If I lowered my sens to something like 40cm and had it peak at 30cm, it just made micros very uncomfortable to do with my wrist due to the lower range of motion. I did use this type of accel for a couple months and I do think I prefer it to a linear curve with no offset, but I think no accel is still preferable for most people.
      The exception to that is people who play a super low base sensitivity and are comfortable using their arm for smaller movements than I am, I can def see the benefit there for maintaining good accuracy in micros while not losing out on speed which is what I wrote into the script, but yea it just felt too tacked on and I cut it, I didn't think that many ppl used that type of accel haha

The only thing that has suffered in macro flicking meaning flicks using my arm. Micro flicks are better than ever. While I'm not sure about cm per 360 my current curve is base about 0.78, my max sens is capped at 1.1 with high acceleration (I'd say the ideal base sense in between 0.75 and 0.85 for most wrist aimers). I do 90% of my aiming via wrist and I have far more control over the mouse than what I ever had before in terms of micro adjustments and velocity control. I will say I basically only play Apex legends and haven't even tried on Val or CSGO so I don't know how detrimental the input offset could be there but for my use case it's perfect.
      I'll put my curve setting here for anyone interested
