  • 4 best mates went climbing up a Beautiful Sequoia Tree in the Dandenong Ranges. after enjoying the climb Andy was the last one in the tree. He was busy searching for a piece of equipment that had fallen off my harness when suddenly he was falling. he had forgotten to tie a stopper knot in the end of his line.
A very traumatic experience but we Praise God that Andy survived with only 5 broken ribs, a fractured vertebrae and a broken Pinky.
2 months later he was back at work and a few months after that he was completely healed.

Hits home brother. The same thing happened to me. I tied in and had plenty of rope until I climbed higher and tied in again and that left me short. I made the same mistake of not putting a knot in the end as well. I fell about 20-25' and landed on my left side. That was the mistake that made me old at 30. My entire life changed after that fall. It has taken all I am to keep climbing. I have a hard time trusting my gear now even though it was my fault not my gear! I cant do near what I used to be able to do but I never got surgery or took pain pills so I praise our God every night and morning because He is the one that spared me that day and allowed me to continue to be a father. If you are reading this and climb always put a knot in the end of your rope if its not a lot longer than you need and stay safe! Thank you Lord for sparing this young mans life as well!

I'm a climber. Someone I know just died last week like this. The number one cause of death is people not using a stop knot when repelling. Second most common is not checking their new anchor system when they're about to transfer into the rock wall hardware to for the repel.

@@aydinsha I have a question though, which may sound dumb, but I am curious. If you do end up reaching your stopper knot, how the hell are you gonna get down? Wouldn't you have used up all of your rope? Like, I understand that it's a safety precaution and you absolutely should do it because it's way better to be stuck mid-air than to fall to your death. I also understand that most climbers will probably make sure well in advance that they have more than enough rope for a climb. But seriously though, what do you do in a situation like that? Do you just wait to get rescued or something? What if it happens in a remote climbing location?

Absolutely tie a stopper knot and leave yourself a 10 foot tail of rope beyond it, this will make getting of the knot much easier if you run it into your hitch system. You have options from a footlock to an ascender to get off the knot with a tail in a safe manner. See to many tie the stopper in the last 6 inches of the rope and that takes a lot to get off of. Like aerial rescue you should practice this, low and slow of course. God Bless and be safe.

If you are advancing your climbing line in tree a stopper knot is a must. A quick descent even while being mindful of being short of the ground can find you running off the tail of your rope before you can see it coming! Take the time to secure the tail! I came within inches on one occasion while stopping my descent thinking I had plenty of tail remaining. Only by God’s grace was I spared what almost occurred. I won’t let that happen again. I stress this to all climbers that I meet. Glad things worked out. Thanks for putting this up. 👋

One very lucky man, my goodness that brought back a memory what happen to me in the late 90's.
I was a linesmen for 10years climbing electicity poles and I fell maybe 8mtrs straight into a backfilled trench, the ground was soft which saved me! I made the mistake of passing my pole strap around the pole and without looking to check I clipped in correctly, as I sat back into my linemen belt I watched the pole strap fly around the back of the pole, I tried to reach for the pole but missed, immeadiatly I knew I was in trouble and down I went fast but thankfully I walked away with no injury just a big dent in the soft ground where I landed - From that day on I double checked to make sure the pole strap gate passed through the eye on my linemen belt.

As soon as the camera panned to his DRT setup after mentioning the tree was 65+ meters tall (over the standard 200' length of most 'long' ropes), then everything became a blur, my first thought was, "OH NO! Did he forget the stopper knot?" I am very happy to hear he healed well enough to get back into the canopy as it would have been a tragedy either that he succumbed to this fall, or he was prevented from doing what he obviously loves to do all because of a mistake.

He is so lucky, I fell 10 feet (about 3 meters) after an awning gave way underneath me. I landed on concrete, broke my pelvis in five places, shattered both of the bones in my left arm and broke my right foot. I had 2 surgeries and spent a week in the hospital. I left the hospital with three plates and 30 some odd screws in my body but luckly enough I didnt hit my head. My brother was there for the whole thing and it really affected him.
Long story short, someone was DEFINITELY looking out for your brother and I am so glad he could walk away with his mental facilities and body intact.

@@treeclimberharry582 appreciate that, can’t remember the last time someone told me I made their day lol, I’m from England and am fortunate enough to have been over to Australia twice as half my family live in Adelaide, I’ve never been to a church in England but my family in Australia are very religious and we went to church with them once, I was young so was pretty naive and didn’t take it seriously at the time but as I’ve got older and look back I can’t forget the atmosphere and love in that building, it’s wasn’t like a typical English church it was more like a giant theatre stage, well over a hundred people all on their feet singing songs while the band played, I felt so out of place at the time but now I can’t feel anything but envy for the bond everyone had in that room, it just felt like you were family with everyone their and you genuinely just felt the love, like you said the Holy Spirit must be working on my heart as I’ve definitely been feeling different this past year towards it all which again is a very weird feeling for me because I’ve always believed in the science over everything and without any influence I just started to feel that “pull” towards it. Sorry to waffle, appreciate you taking the time to reply to me on 2 year old video and I hope everyone in that video is still healthy and climbing those trees, take care.

My niece fell out of a tree as a 7 year old and gave herself such grevious injuries that she was in hospital for 11 months and 13 days, almost a whole year.
She had to have a colostomy and was lucky she survived.
She only fell about 2 meters but landed impaled in her bum and private parts and needed to be physically lifted from a broken branch that had penetrated more than 7 inches inside her poor little body.
She lost an ovary and as i said had to have a colostomy bag as her bowels were torn to pieces.
