Meaning of these terminologies sea coast and sea shore? (Shore line, cliff line, backshore , offshore , foreshore)
Summary in answer format ...
The action of marine erosion is performed by various marine agents i.e. sea waves, oceanic currents, tides etc.
Numerous sorts of landforms are produced due to erosion of coastal rocks by marine agents by the mechanism of hydraulic action , solution , abrasion etc. on which a significant account is as follows...
1. Cliffs.. Steep rocky coast rising almost vertically over the sea level is known as sea cliff which are highly precipitous with overhanging crest.
If the base of cliffs gets highly eroded by marine erosion then the hanging wall or overhanging crest is formed at its upper part.
2. Wave Cut platforms... Rock cut flat surfaces formed in the front of cliffs are known as wave cut platforms which are slightly concave upwards.
These landforms are formed due to mechanism of cliff recession at its base that leads to collapse of overhanging crest and the debris is removed by marine agents and wave cut platforms are formed.
3.Caves...When the soluble coastal rocks are eroded by marine erosion then caves are formed . When the caves gets enlarged due to continuous marine erosion then their roof get collapsed and a narrow inlet of sea water towards the coast is formed known as geo.
4. Blow holes or natural chimneys.. Sometimes, the air in the caves gets compressed due to uprushing storm waves and finding no other to escape it break down the roof of caves along the joints and appears with great force making a unique whistling known as natural chimney or blow holes.
5. Natural arch and Stacks...
When the caves formed at both the sides of seaward projecting landmass gets coalesced then natural arch is formed which on continuose enlargement becomes remarkably thin and collapes down and a isolated remnant of landmass stands detached towards sea over the sea water known as stacks or chimneys
