He’s a personable guy buy why am I often disappointed with interviews about Thailand? I am an American who has lived in Thailand 7 1/2 years. Six years in Bangkok and the rest of the time in the Thai countryside. I’ve also spent my fair share of time in Pattaya. What people need to understand is that as soon as the interviewee says they are from Pattaya then you are going to get a very distorted view of Thailand as a whole. Pattaya/Jomtien is a very unique concentration of expat foreigners and a huge number of tourists that makes the place pretty much an adult Disneyland. I’ve had plenty of good times there but I wouldn’t want most people to think it is representative of all the rest of Thailand or even most long term expats.
By the way, Pattaya has plenty of flooding during the rainy season. I’ve walked calf deep in those waters myself.
Thailand has three seasons - the hot 🥵 season from mid-March through May, the rainy season, right now through September, and the the dry season which is often plagued, in some regions, by air pollution due to agriculture burning. The dry season can be somewhat cool at night in December/January.
Outside of Pattaya and Bangkok you can expect to find Thai women in the countryside are culturally pretty similar to Filipinas in the province.
I am also a retired engineer. I have to agree that the Thai language is pretty difficult but I know enough to get by. It’s not the tones that are a problem. It’s just that 30 years of science/engineering has wired my brain against picking up languages holistically. I’m not tone deaf however. I’m a very experienced salsa dancer 🕺
I'd say Pattaya would be a very Dark version of some Perverted Disneyland . You do not have to participate . There are a lot of other hings to do . Inexpensive dentistry , skin clinics , golf , etc . However if you like walking the disturbing sights on a daily basis show a morbid picture of old men retiring to a life of sitting in bars , hiring desperate hookers , and sitting in a circle around a pool looking at each other's decline . I don't know what % are homosexual but there's a lot of peter gazing and too long looks going on . Woo Woo ! Sad
The food and infrastructure are better.

100% on the Tampo. In the phillipines the girl will refuse to speak, she will Make faces, and you can definitely tell they are angry or upset. If you push a Filipina girl to speak while she is in tampo she will lash out at you. In Thailand the women are still lady like. The Thai Girl will Become more silent not speak as much but she will not make faces or give an attitude. Thai women will more than likely not lash at you either. Reason they do not speak so much is because they do not want to say or do something stupid to make things worse. Thai women keep their lady like attitude.

I can understand perfectly. Even if i love philippines. You can not walk by the street, they forgot about the pedestrian, traffic and street walk is nightmare. Hope one day it will change. Is easier to live in thailand

I think though if you are choosing a Country based on a long term, commited relationship then the Philippines may be a better fit. As your guest said it’s a personal choice. Hello, my first time watching one of your videos. Good info for sure. Maya, you are very beautiful! I'm from London Ontario, Canada. Looking at other options as our country is going downhill fast with Liberal corruption, and nothing can be done about it and cost of living has skyrocketed. For me, I was wondering how hot and humid it is and if i can handle that. It's the humidity that gets me. I just turned 60 and lost a good job as the plant closed. So, right now forced retirement. He didn’t mention it but the newest visa is the DTV (Destination Thailand Visa). It is a 5 year multiple entry visa in which you get stamped in 180 days at a time. You have to show that you have 500,000 baht ($13,750) in your bank and that you are coming for a reason but it definitely fills a niche allowing people under 50 years old to stay relatively long term in Thailand.
What your guest was describing was not a visa. He was referring to a 60 day visa exemption entry with the ability to extend once for 30 more days.
I mentioned only the Retirement Visa for people over 50 years old, so I was addressing the majority of people living there.
Cost of this Visa, if using an Visa agent is around 13.000,- Baht, so in 5 years it's 65.000,- Baht, so compare to your mentioned DTV of 500k it's irrelevant. ( Under 50 years old different options are available )

Anytime you have a country that's ruled by the church, there's going to be numerous problems with the society. The Philippines although beautiful has a lot of growing up to do in order to be on par with Thailand. Knowing English isn't enough to run a country. I would rather learn a new language than to go through the deficiencies of the Philippines. Btw, I've been with philippino people for the last 28 years. I don't dislike the people as matter of fact I truly enjoy the company of most philippinos. Between the superstitions, poverty and the church. I think it would be difficult for me to retire there.

He didn’t explain the 800,000 baht ($22,000) quite right. The money remains your money but you can’t actually spend it. It needs to stay in your account all year or they won’t allow you to extend your visa the following year. There is also a monthly income option as well which requires you to deposit 65,000 per month, every month. You can spend that money as you like. It’s all a little more complicated than that but those are the basics of the nonimmigrant O visa and extensions.
I am using a Visa Agent that arranges my visa, and he also takes care of all the financial requirements.
( NO need for me to have the 800k baht in my Baht account 3 Monat before I apply for a renewal Visa )
Cost around 12.500,- Baht using this Agent, a 1 payment for a year for the retirement Visa , valid for 12 months.
in practice, visa agents circumvent those complex rules

It's partly because people from Thailand respect their environment much more than the people of the Philippines. Litter in the Philippines is just beyond. The ocean, rivers, and beaches are unconsciously used as trashcans. I'm just saying.

The guy looks really fit for his age. Pattaya isn't really the place I think about, in terms of a healthy lifestyle, but I guess he's got it.
When I was in Pattaya, it was at the end of the pandemic, before all the western tourists came back. It was mostly indian guys there then, many of the clubs played indian music all night and many restaurants served indian food, which was a bit unexpected.
Credit to the hotel I stayed at though, 7.500 TB per month, decent room with balcony, cable-TV, roomservice, a good restaurant on the groundfloor and nice staff, it was family run, by the mother and her oldest son. I'm sure it costs more now though, since the town was half empty when I was there.
To me, Pattaya/Jomtien felt a bit like cheap copies of tourist spots on the Mediterranean or Caribbean Seas. As for the heat I found it much worse in Thailand than in the Ph., but I guess it's different for different persons.

4) raise some other fool's kids
5) tie myself down inconveniently
6) throw away all the peace, quite, rest, adventure and fun.. that I had been working my whole life for

8) support an entire clan of strangers that weren't there for me when my a$$ was in pain working with ailments all those years
9) give into a self defeating trend of stu_pid decision making
10) make myself more miserable with drama
11) leave one stressful life for another

14) do anything other than enjoying my life in my retirement?

Samui is a pretty large island in the Gulf of Thailand. You can take a ferry there but most people fly there.

I take Thailand over Philippines any day. The food is much better, Thailand does not have the constant problems with internet and electricity outages. Thailand has better hospitals. The cities in Thailand are much cleaner and less poverty than phillipines. There is also much less crime in Thailand. The most beautiful women are in phillipines but the average Thailand Girl is more attractive than the Average Filipina. The Filipinos are more friendly and sociable but that does not mean the people are kinder. Thai people are more reserved but I have found the people are more respectful. Thailand for the win for me.
