  • Join me on a scenic walk through South Boston during Boston Harborfest 2024, starting on Broadway Street and taking us around Pleasure Bay. Our journey offers stunning views and historical insights, ending with a memorable 21-gun salute.
We begin on Broadway Street in Southie, a neighborhood rich in history and local culture. Walking through, we capture the essence of South Boston with its vibrant streets and community parks. As we approach Pleasure Bay, we enjoy the serene waterfront, a popular spot for both locals and visitors.
Our route takes us past Sullivan's Castle Island, a beloved local eatery that has been serving the community since 1951. Castle Island itself has a storied past, being the oldest continuously fortified site in British North America. Today, it is home to Fort Independence, a granite fort built between 1833 and 1851, which has been a National Historic Landmark since 1970.
As we reach the waterfront, we witness the traditional 21-gun salute from the USS Constitution, America's oldest commissioned warship still afloat. Known as "Old Ironsides," the USS Constitution was launched in 1797 and played a crucial role in the War of 1812. The salute is a ceremonial event marking its historic significance. The salute is returned by Fort Independence, completing this patriotic display.
