  • A showpiece with a incredible violinist and pianist, and a good composer.
Chuanyun Li is a Chinese violin virtuoso. He began studying violin at the age of 3 and won his first prize in Beijing when he was five. Here, pianist Robert Koenig is accompanying him.
La Ronde de Lutins by Antonio Bazzini is a difficult violin piece which contains extended passages of rapid double stops, artificial harmonics in double stops (using all four left fingers) and left-hand pizzicati.

0:24 you can hear the stylish vibrato in these very short notes, whereas typically vibrato is reserved for drawing out longer notes. It makes the piece sound very flashy and sassy xD

Bazzini's piece is one of the ultimate tests of technical prowess for any violinist. This is one of the cleanest (if not THE cleanest) performances of it that I've heard.

I like this better than his teacher, Perlman’s recordings, and any other I’ve watched and listened to.
That left hand pizz at 2:26......😲 Never heard anyone else do it!!
But it’s more than just technical wizardry. Intonation and musicality is remarkable.
I hope he again will grace audiences with his genius.

Mr. Li doesn’t have the body of work that his teacher, the great Itzhak Perlman or other contemporaries like Hillary Hahn have. I however think that Mr Li plays all notoriously difficult pieces like Round of Goblins, Pag 24 (although wildly unorthodox), Nel Cor Piu, Zigeunerweisen, Carmen Fantasy (both Sarasate's and (especially) Waxman's), and Banjo and Fiddle better and at a higher skill level than anyone else I’ve listened to. Perhaps Midori played Zapateado better than Mr Li. One might think that Mr Li is a technical wizard only, but listening to his interpretation of Strauss and Tchaik’s violin concerto, it’s abundantly clear that his intonation, phrasing and musicality is equally as good as his technical wizardry. Mr. Li’s spiccato and left hand pizz is simply mind blowing.
I would love to hear Mr. Li play Bach and Sibelius. But even though I haven’t, I believe Li Chuanyun is the finest living violinist and perhaps the greatest ever. I wish so much he’d come back and bless audiences in all major concert halls all over the world with his amazing interpretations.
