  • Deontay Wilder overcame a broken hand and stopped Chris Arreola in eight rounds to retain his world heavyweight title.
    Deontay Wilder was so impressive defending his world heavyweight title against Chris Arreola, he didn’t even need both hands to finish the job.
    Wilder scored a fourth-round knockdown of Arreola and retained his championship before an adoring crowd in Birmingham, Alabama, when Arreola’s corner asked referee Jack Reiss to stop the fight after Round 8.
    Wilder, who was fighting about an hour’s drive from his hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was dominant against Arreola despite injuring himself in the process. After the fight, the champ revealed that he broke his right hand before tearing his right bicep in “the third or the fourth round.”
    Promoter Lou DiBella said Wilder was taken to a Birmingham hospital after the fight and would be “seeing a specialist this week to assess the damage to his right hand and right bicep muscle.”
    It was late in Round 4 when Wilder rocked Arreola with a powerful right hand before knocking him to the canvas with barrage of sweeping punches. Arreola got up but barely survived the round as “The Bronze Bomber” bludgeoned him against the ropes as the bell rang.
    Arreola took the fight on fairly short notice after Wilder’s scheduled defense against Alexander Povetkin in Moscow on May 21 was canceled less than a week beforehand when it was revealed the Russian challenger tested positive for a banned substance.
    The defeat marked Arreola’s third attempt to become the first Mexican heavyweight champion in history, following his losses to Vitali Klitschko in September 2009 and Bermane Stiverne in May 2014.
    With the cancellation of the Povetkin fight, the 6-foot-7, 226-pound Wilder was competing in the ring for the first time after a career-long six-month layoff.
    Wilder, who honored Muhammad Ali on his trunks, worked marvelously behind his jab throughout the fight as he kept the 6-foot-3, 246-pound Arreola searching for openings.
    The champ clowned at moments during clenches, swiveling his hips as if the fighters were engaged in dance, but he became more fierce with his jab and hooks in Rounds 7 and 8 before Arreola’s longtime trainer, Henry Ramirez, called for an end to the bout.

      Ohhhh so that's the narrative. It's not the Wilder is clearly better than Ruiz, it's that Arreola didn't show up to fight against Wilder. Ooooooook. Wilder stopped Arreola with a broken right hand and bicep 5 years ago while Ruiz got dropped and won by decision. Never forget.

    • @myiqis2752
      @myiqis2752 Před 2 lety +7

      @@cangrejopendejo4909 stop using boxing math to validate your argument. pacquiao dominated miguel cotto and stopped him whereas floyd went to a somewhat hard fought decision to beat him so pac would beat floyd right? genuinely watch this fight and then the ruiz fight right after, it’s a different arreola. you can go to basically any point in this fight and he won’t throw a single punch for a whole 40 seconds, and when he does it’s stupid slow telegraphed punches that don’t even land, and its not because wilder is a defensive genius. against ruiz, arreola was more measured, he threw back when he got hit and his defence was sharper

    • @cangrejopendejo4909
      @cangrejopendejo4909 Před 2 lety +2

      @@myiqis2752 You should really take your own advice and watch both fights again because I did, and Arreola was boring and inactive in both fights. He was slightly more active against Ruiz, but Arreola had to deal with Wilder's height advantage and also respect his power, something he didn't have to worry about with the 6'2" 60% KO percentage Ruiz. Also, when Arreola attacked Wilder, Wilder used his height advantage and quick feet to avoid most of his shots. Ruiz got dropped and stumbled around a few times while Wilder was dancing and showboating when Arreola was teeing off on his body. I never said Wilder is a defensive genius, but he's definitely better than Ruiz at defending himself. Don't forget that Wilder broke his right hand and tore his right bicep in that fight, and STILL stopped him while Ruiz went the distance.. Pathetic performance by Ruiz. You're comparing Miguel Cotto vs Floyd Mayweather to Ruiz vs bum ass washed up Arreola. You can't use the "styles make fights" excuse when you're talking about a fking cab driver. Arreola doesn't have a style.. He's as basic as basic can be, and Ruiz struggled anyway. If basic 40 year old Arreola can touch Ruiz that much just imagine what Wilder would do to him.

    Had Wilder not lost to Fury, I wouldn't think that he's beatable. In hindsight, it's very easy to see why Wilder's training isn't up to par at all. His technique is ragged when he gets tired. His defense wains periodically until he either catches his breath, or fires a shot. If he really trained, had skills, and really worked on them and wasn't overly confident. He could've gone undefeated. The ultimate let down for me is the spiritual quality of being humble. In every aspect of success. Most people don't allow people in because we don't want anyone to think that we're soft. Especially in the manliest of sports, boxing. We'd rather do that thing we said we'd never do than have anyone think that we're soft.
