  • I recently shot an event using a very old style vintage flash on my Mamiya C220 Professional medium format camera. I mentioned that the old vintage flash is actually a brand new product that I was using for the first time. I've had so many people asking me about this flash I thought it best to put together a quick video to tell you about it. This is the Godox Lux Senior.
In this video I have the flash mounted on a Vivitar PG-1 flash grip. Be aware that if you mount the flash on a cold shoe you need to put tape on the cold shoe to avoid shorting the flash hot shoe contacts. I use a 3D printed mount that resolves this. If anyone wants the 3D print file for this mount, contact me. I am happy to send it to you.

Here are some mods I found helpful: I spray-painted the reflector white, increasing softness & reducing edge fall-off. I also made a 1/4CTO sleeve to slip on the flash tube (2 1/4" x 7/8" backed with clear tape for extra sturdiness) which 'warmed' up the color rendition nicely. Light output was only reduced by about 1/3 - 1/2 stop.

JIm, I'm very interested in antique typewriters. I noticed "Marathon of Hope" in one of your photos. Tell me more about the event. A short search resulted in me finding a news article form CBCNews in May of 2023. Also... I'm enjoying your channel. Thanks, Guy

Such a cool flash! I am with you, I hate flash, I am so bad I will not take picture if I have to use flash, but this is very, very neat! Thanks for sharing. I forgo to add, what cool typewriters too! I learnt to type in my teen years on an Underwood :).

I think the reason I hate flash is because I’m not very good at it and so few are. There are some amazing photographers that really know how to use flash properly. I’m not in that group 😂

@@jsollowsphotography Ha! Yeah I have more than I will probably ever need, a mix of AG, M2, and M3. I just got 12 dozen M2B in the mail today, only $11 us, I couldn't resist! I love them...but let me know if you need a dozen. Thanks for the videos!

Really liked your video, I have been thinking of buying one of these flash units for my Mamiya TLRs as well. What flash bracket is that on your C220? Looks very handy and comfortable to use.

Hi Dan! The bracket is an old Vivitar PG-1 Flash Bracket. It’s very sturdy and works perfect. The one problem is that the Vivitar cold shoe is a bit of a tight fit for the Godox hot shoe. I’ve installed a small 3D printed riser to resolve this but you could also widen the Vivitar cold shoe with a small file. It wouldn’t take much. There are also flash risers on Amazon. One note it does say in the manual .. if mounting the flash hot shoe on a camera cold shoe mount you need to use tape or paper to prevent the hot shoe contacts from shorting out. Using a 3D printed riser completely resolves this. If you have access to a 3D printer, contact me and I will send you the file.

What do you recommend for a flash bracket for a TLR? Thx. (South Is. BC).

The one I have in the video and photo is the Vivitar PG-1 they are easy to find on eBay or Facebook Marketplace.
