As a creative professional I immedietly fell in love with the surface studio the second I saw it for the first time, but the price and limited performance basically rules it out completely for my work.
I can't tell you how frustrating it is to see something that could easily be all you ever wanted but it is ruined by things that wouldn't be hard to fix for them.
Please Microsoft, I'm begging you, make a more powerful version or a monitor out of this thing. I need this in my life.

@@21dazzer see, I'm not an Apple hater. I love Apple more than any other company. So much so that I actually watched all WWDC events of the past 20 years on CZcams and so I know almost all products of Apple. I'm not just a moaning bitch that loves to hate Apple.
Now coming to the display side, yes this display isn't aimed for me, and instead aimed for filmmakers, not even CZcamsrs. But that doesn't change the fact that the stand is literally overpriced. Yes it could beat all other monitor stands by it's enormous flexibility (it's Apple), but that doesn't justify it's cost.
Now the Pro Display XDR may not be overpriced but this monitor doesn't have any of the I/O that professional displays need. Only tech CZcamsrs will buy this.
@@21dazzer moreover go take a look at the Asus ProArt PA32UCX which actually has everything Apple offers with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1152 dimming zones(that's double that of the Apple's display). The only downgrade is the resolution which is still 4k and it's more than enough for many people. It's just $3000.

Fantastic review Linus. You touched on many of the points I had in regards to the insanely low power for such a high bandwidth display. I also feel that Microsoft is purposefully not including a way to send another input to the screen because they don't want people to use the monitor past the life of the PC for other things because I'll admit the screen is absolutely gorgeous and very color accurate. The price though is absolutely insane for what you get. It's like you're paying $3000 for the screen and $1000 for the computer attached to it and even that is a stretch in most regards. The only reason I would own one would be for drawing since it's not nearly strong enough to edit video which is sad considering how gorgeous and high resolution the screen is.
After I got a $500 Chinese Tablet with the best screen you could get on a top of the line Surface, I have to wonder if there isn't a Chinese vendor out there who could grab the OEM Studio Monitor and repackage it.
You can always leverage it with an external GPU...I mean, they want $3,000 right? OH WAIT

@@mkm_ I understand the intent, I think the reason it annoys me is because it has the opposite effect on me. I've hardly watched any LTT videos since they changed their thumbnail and title style. I think it's because they just don't grab me, I prefer knowing what the video is about, especially when I only see the title through a push notification. Now that every title is so vague and uninformative as to what content is in the video the LTT videos always loose out to other videos in my recommend.

It sounds like a pity outcry for attention with this new surface studio. Don't just release a product solely for the purpose of competition with another business. Plan it out and give it a bit to develop it so it it can be even better than a IMac

Thats what happens when your design team uses a photocopier to "create" vs designs something from scratch to beat the competition. The 1min they spent copying Apples iMac and then putting worse hardware and even less upgradability in it amazes me. The ONLY thing this thing has going for it is the touch screen, if only Windows 10 wasnt so bad at touch.
Because touchscreen is super expensive. 3200$ for a 32" touchscreen will left you with 1500$ for a GTX1070, 1TB NVMe drive, a quad-core processor, 32 GB of RAM, and the hinge for the display plus the necessary design cost....

Microsoft's fault in this is probably the AIO tax is not in form of super higher price, but the reduced laptop specs instead

It's kinda sad that a screen for drawing like that would be considered a *good* price at $2000. I've been using Wacoms but when Huion gets its hands on the etched glass screen design I'm gonna switch it out!

Open it up to see if you can remove the computer and use a different computer hooked up to the monitor, or at lease see if it's possible.
Sadly, unless Microsoft makes the stand-alone drivers for the touch-screen available for it, which doesn't seem likely, this won't be possible.

there is a big problem here.
microsoft released this product lineup to compete with apple, so they can't sell the screen as a standalone product because doing so would mean that people would just buy the screen and hook that up to whichever apple device they are using, instead of completely switching to wondows.
They can't be price competitive with it. It's the total build out that makes them a profit. They are running last gen internals for a reason. And really, there are only a few programs I can think of that wouldn't run perfectly fine on that and those programs don't benefit much from a touchscreen to begin with. Everything that does could make good use of that machine. Much better than the first version.

LOL! Meanwhile Apple is asking $6000 for a PC that only has an 32GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. That doesn't even include a monitor. For that, you need to chip in another $5000 which is more than the entire Surface Studio 2. You could buy two Surface Studio 2s for the price of one Mac Pro base model, and still have almost $3000 left over.
I'd agree the Surface Studio 2 needs to be more powerful, and perhaps separate the monitor and the PC part. Having said that, it's not near the ripoff the Mac Pro is.

Windows 10 already has a low blue light mode called Night Light. I think it’s in display settings.

Microsoft is to worried about how it looks. They just need to make the base bigger so they can stuff more stuff in!! I honestly don't think the professionals who use this would mind that extra space if it meant they got a performance boost.
And one more thing;
I know it is a touch screen and the difficulties it can make in the manufacturing process, but if they could fit an 8k screen in there? I bet every artist in the land would be interested in it.
As an engineer, it MUST be able to run very large 3D software. MUST!
One cool thing about using an iPad Pro with an iMac (or any Mac), is that you can use the iPad Pro as both a Wacom Tablet-like device or as a 2nd or 3rd monitor, or both at the same time.
I use a 12.9” iPad Pro connected to my older Mac Pros as a input device with the Apple Pencil to write music notation and its input is very fast and responsive. You can also use the iPad Pros with a Windows PC as a Wacom style tablet. Try it out if you have one. You might need a cheap app called Duet, on the iOS App Store but it’s well worth the money (it’s cheap and rock solid).

That's simply not true. Both the Surface Laptop 2 and the Surface Pro 6 have quad-core processors.
But those are laptops/tablets. Im not one to talk I run a 7700K as well as a 2600X but if I were to buy something NOW it better be 6 or more core. Extra threads or not. And in the video context, that's a 'pro' grade machine for 4,000$... Quad core. That's wild. Screen is dope tho haha

Geez, I spent half of that $4200, and got a cinebench of 1422 without OC'ing. While also getting a battery backup, AIO, Monitor, Peripherals, and a GoPro Hero 7 Silver. And this was all at local shops on Vancouver Island. Come On Microsoft. I know its a year and a half later... but I only got a 2nd gen Ryzen 3 3200g which is quad core, not hyperthreaded.
I'd love for them to split gpu and cpu, with one in the box and the other in the screen. A thicker screen won't do any harm and means more horsepower could be included plus better cooling.

Rumor has it that they will be selling the monitors separately in 2019. And i agree with you on everything here. and while i don't think the price is entirely justified, i still want one so badly. Drawing and video editing is all i really do also. I just can never afford this think unfortunately

Even a year later (August 2020): I still agree. All of the Surface products spent way too much time in incubation and then launched with last-generation specifications. Hopefully the #Surface Studio 3 will launch with desktop-class internals and up-to-date I/O.

Is it not possible to disassemble this thing and solder the monitor's connector to a display port cable?
Even if you can do something like that, you'd still need drivers for it to run on any other system.
Since the only major issue with the hardware is the CPU (for the kind of tasks this thing is designed for anyway.) You could theoretically de-solder the CPU, then take a better CPU with compatible form factor (like from a high end laptop or something) and solder that in it's place.
Such a mod would require an absolutely masterful solder job to have any chance of not bricking the CPU or the motherboard, but theoretically it's possible.
The monitor almost certainly uses some variant of lvds rather than display port to communicate with the motherboard.
@@scofield117 Which you can get adapters for. So we might see people doing this mod down the line. I'd imagine the pen/touch is straight USB.
@@GeneralNickles This display should have drivers in windows built-in, so drivers are not a problem. (for touch, you don't need drivers for display)

The issue is thermodynamics. They have chosen well, for that form-factor. The choice for FUTURE MODELS: keep form-factor, but switch from Intel and NVIDIA to ARM CPU and Graphics; or, go with PRO Intel and NVIDIA, but separate the machine from the base... to which they should add ports, and other accessibility features; OR... SEPARATE and SWITCH to ARM processors... LOTS OF ARM PROCESSORS... for the same power and thermal cost as a WEAKER X86 box. It's time for Microsoft to adopt Linux, or BSD, too. Emulate X86 Windows for legacy apps/games... the processing power will be available.

Personally I would recommend Flux over the native windows night mode, since with the recent versions, flux works really nicely in a totally seamless way. But yes, windows does have one, and it surprised me that no one caught that error.

What a shame on the processor, I was considering this for my work, looks like I'll be looking else where, especially since nothing can be upgraded. For $3500+ you would think you could do whatever you wanted with it. Not so high end after all.

I recently went to order more HP desktops for work as we've just taken on some new staff, only to have HP tell me that they have no processors from Intel and have no timeframe as to when they'll get more. To make matters worse, we need to replace a stand-alone server which is in one of the offices. Processors? HP says NOPE. This is HP ENTERPRISE telling me they have NO components and that they're in a production halt.
I'm not surprised that Microsoft had to underspec this thing. If they cant get processors from Intel and HP cant, then AMD is going to stomp Intel into oblivion in the next 12 months. No business is going to wait for Intel to get their shit together, they'll just move parts vendors. AMD has a compelling product, even if the IPC is marginally lower. Swapping to AMD for any OEM is a far better idea than not selling anything because they're still waiting for Intel to work out how to make things.
It would take a few months of engineering buts thats probably done, and just test, but especially zen 2 which is made by tsmc won't have that issue, For all of TSMC's faults the ability to scale is not one of them.
Microsoft just did it, not choosing AMD and instead put an older generation chip in their product. So I guess they want to wait instead of using AMD. Very sad to see this happen.

There's nothing I regret more than buying my Surface Book 2. If it's not an Xbox, I don't trust Microsoft with hardware anymore. Ended up being such a mess of disappointment.

Checking at the almost halfway mark of 2019 for the Surface Studio 2, All I can say is that the graphic options can decided between a 1060 and 1070, you can get 1-2 TB of storage and a 16-32 GB processor, sounds good, but it still has that 7th gen i7

would be interesting to see you guys compare the surface lineup to wacom's run of cintiqs or even the newer huion kamvas pro line! as someone looking to build for creative work, it'd be interesting to see how you find the screens to hold up as displays as well as tablets
also compare the color within the displays as they're meant for people working with that in mind
I actually disagree on the touch screen sensitiveness, I tested it recently and i can say with all certainty that the surface pro is not even close to my wacom cintiq. There is not way I would spend more than 4k on something like this.
