    I hope an artist that needs this information can find it here...it is being posted "just in case". Making the Charlie pen into the tool of the artist/cartoonist/calligrapher should be possible with minimal effort and very little cost.

    "Would a Charlie full of X-Feather be good or should I just stick to HOD?" The Charlie is designed to use most of the inks dating back to 1879...though it is NOT compatible with alcohol or other chemical solvent based inks (alcohol, xylene, toluene, MEK, and acetone will all dissolve the pen...so do not use any "pen rinse" or other product that has any such solvents in it!) The variety of purely water based inks is truly vast...and should be more than ample. It is one of the most reliable and conventional feed mechanisms that has a good record with a wide array of dye groups dating back to the early days of the industry. Its abilities are significant and should not be underestimated either due to its utilitarian appearance or lack of economic status among the conspicuous. The only "pen rinse" ever needed for a dried out and forgotten pen is the least costly household ammonia at your local super market. (& if using baystate blue, use bleach instead of ammonia - but never both!)

    The charlie was designed for the stingy flow of a Heart of Darkness but would an X-Feather be alright on a Charlie? I need a nice starterish Work Horse for my first year of high school and won't be using very nice paper so the X-Feather would be nice. Would a Charlie full of X-Feather be good or should I just stick to HOD?

      +Tabloid Junkie Try it with HOD. It actually does pretty well on junk paper with the Charlie, just leave the feed as-is.

      BrewGuy Mike They sold out again at the wholesale level soon after getting there, but there will be more as soon as possible. Eventually there will be enough pens to justify my price/cost theories....or I will die trying. Assuming the Charlie does not give me a premature end (I will not go away easily), the due date won't come for a few more decades.

    I have this issue with my new Charlie pen. Every time I write with it, it occasionally leaves blobs of ink on the paper. Is there any way I can fix this? Thank you!

      +Thirdy T. Heat set your nib. Worked wonders on mine

    • @InkNeedLastForever
      @InkNeedLastForever  Před 8 lety +9

      +Thirdy T. Please see other comments on this channel regarding this. Push the nib/feed deeper into the section (until it is firm)...and when the pen begins to have a large air pocket and the flow seems greater than normal - just refill it. In some environments with the right conditions the air will expand due to the heat of your hand - pushing the ink out. Reduce the air...and that force is also reduced.

    • @myfloridalife2651
      @myfloridalife2651 Před 8 lety +5

      +Thirdy T. If you keep Charlie in your shirt or pants pocket with the tip up, it will be body temperature when you start using it. If I pause to think for a long time, I will hold the tip up and wrap my hand around the body. This lets out any expanding air.

    Nathan do you think your going make an ink that represents the horrific, tragedy that happened during the Salem Witch Trials?

    • @InkNeedLastForever
      @InkNeedLastForever  Před 9 lety +4

      Madam Red I have a relative by the name of Mary Dyer...the old prints of her being brought to the gallows are already on the ink label called "Liberty's Elysium". Whenever I was brought to the Boston Common as a boy, my mother always would point out her statue. If you look up her name, you'll see how truly horrible it was...right here on American soil.

    Hi, will this pen ever be sold as a stand alone product? I already own a bottle of HoD, but I would really like to own this pen.

    • @InkNeedLastForever
      @InkNeedLastForever  Před 9 lety +4

      ***** There is no markup on the pen, it is free... The bottle of ink is what enabled it to be carried to your desk...without the bottle nobody would deliver a free item to you and only the larger bottle size enables this to happen with HOD (the round bottle allows enough space for one to two pens to be included in the packaging). One could devour a bottle of ink pretty fast just doodling, using a brush pen, using a freshly cut 2mm italic, shading an image for depth with a Charlie can render the pen empty in half a day, a three tined Neponset makes a pretty deep line and if done in the style of the Guttenberg Bible it will need refilling within a few pages, or perhaps even following in the footsteps of William S. Burroughs using a different kind of ink brush called the 12 ga video.pbs.org/video/1724700682/ There is one such bit of art that exists called "quantitative easing and the equity markets" ;-)

    Do you still make the half liter, liter and gallon bottles of ink? Having a gallon of blue black, a gallon of midnight blue and a gallon of blue eel would be so awesome!!

    • @InkNeedLastForever
      @InkNeedLastForever  Před 9 lety +3

      Ignacio Zaragoza Shipping is costly and the savings is only in the reduced amount of glass (bear in mind there is a rule here that the economic value of the ink must exceed the value of the bottle and packaging by a decent margin....I consider those products selling more value in packaging/fancy bottles than ink to be luxury bottle manufacturers -NOT ink companies! If you want the best ink, put everything...every effort one can into the ink and its qualities...the bottle and box are only for the delivery and storage of the ink until it is used by the writer). That being said, if you contact Luxury Brands or an overseas distributor of Noodler's - a gallon, half gallon, quart, or pint can be arranged for you...but they probably amount to fewer than 1% of 1% of Noodler's bottles. Vintage ink bottles in the larger sizes were also far less common than standard bottles as far back as the 1890s. It just happens to be the way the market works....afterall you could drop a one gallon bottle and waste a large amount of ink is a second or two, or have it smash in shipping...few people risk that! Noodler's still makes them because my first dealing in ink some time ago were in large 80+ year old vintage bottles (those same bottles are official antiquities today). As I know they will likely become collectibles (being so infrequently shipped), the labels tend to be different on the larger bottles - often a one of a kind label for each one...some have the image of the buyer on them or his/her business references as an office display. Giant ink bottles now get curious looks and some scrutiny in the modern office, yet were so routine 100 years ago!

    Nathan, I want to buy the inks and pens you produce. Problem is that here in Argentina it is almost impossible to acquire goods from other countries. Do you know of any method or retailer which could get them through this burocratic nightmare? Thanks in advance.

    • @InkNeedLastForever
      @InkNeedLastForever  Před 9 lety +4

      For what it is worth, those "Noodler's Ink" marked preppy pens might soon be unavailable. It has been my experience that once a pen is no longer available, with a little time - it becomes collectible. Esterbrooks were once thought of as "toss away pens" (used to pick them up 4 for $1), but look at them now.

    • @julialittleton1802
      @julialittleton1802 Před 9 lety

      The Preppy that came with my bottle of HOD was my first non-calligraphy fountain pen, and it's still the most dependable and smoothest-flowing pen I have. I don't know if it's the pen or the ink or both (and I've had mixed experiences with other Preppys), but working together, they're a great combination. I've written dozens and dozens of pages with that Preppy on paper of highly questionable provenance, with nary a feather or skip ... maybe a blob or two, once in a while, but overall, it's performed like a champ, even though it's had less-than-tender treatment in my bag and has only been cleaned out once. I'm curious about Charlie, though, and will be interested to hear how it fares and whether people will indeed be interested in customizing it.

    • @S1CKTR1CKY
      @S1CKTR1CKY Před 9 lety +1

      It's not that I do not like the Preppy, I just rather have the flexibility that the Charlie portrays to contain, specifically with the ebonite feed. I agree that it is quite dependable and very, very smooth. I have had the same experience with mine.

    Is that ebonite feed available for purchase in the case of failure? I’m not gonna try this if it means the probable death of the pen 😂
