That's called being a good doctor. It's not about not getting attached to patients, it's about giving your emotions a safe space where you can manage them, and dealing with the pain that inevitably comes your way. Wilson is honestly one of the better doctors ever shown on TV, simply because he actually does care, even when others don't.
Wilson’s life is pretty tragic, I would even argue more tragic than house’s, he made a really nice career for himself but he never matured past teenage love and when he finally found the person he was going to build a family/life with, it instantly got taken away...
That's exactly why I will never watch the show entirely. I watched a few episodes already when it was aired and figured I'd watch it one day but when I learnt the end through these clips I knew I would never watch this show. What's the purpose of watching a show where everything is taken of from the main character and the moral he represents is that happiness doesn't exist and everybody dies. I'll pass on that type of sadness
@@Parc_Metit no . most of it is very good and not depressing. i'd say that the later seasons got a bit dumb and ending was more tragic than it needed to be . but other than that it's amazing. it's just that towards the later seasons they always had some 'shocking' ending . and they kept trying to one-up themselves. got annoying.

The pain constantly reminds him of his failure which aggravates him and causes him to be the worst version of himself. Wilson having to deal with the cancer looming over him brings out the same aggravation that House deals with every day of his life, the difference is that Wilson's clock is ticking down too fast and it drives him to rapidly descend down the path House is on. It's a great dynamic because you can see the two of them are very alike and what set them apart was that Wilson hadn't given up or dealt with the pain House was in while House spiraled.

One of the best acts of friendships I ever received was when I was being a moron and my friend punched me in the face before explaining just how much of a moron I was being. He was a groomsman at my wedding. House kind of reminds of that guy.

Had a friend for a long time but I was the place where she would dumped all her troubles on. Even my dad told her,it was not right what she was doing. Me thinking she would change for the better, it became worse. When my dad passed away, she cut me off completely. My mum was very disappointed with her. I moved on. But when her dad passed away a few years later, she connected with me again. I gave her a second chance with a disasters result that left me hurt for a long time. True friends are hard to come by. We mostly have friends for the good times or when they are in a financial trouble. After that you don't see or hear from them again.

Stayed good as I can be and now I only wish to be happy and healthy. Sorry to say that I'm happy as God is willing but the health part could have been better. They say that God is testing our endurance and love, to see how far we are able to withstand. I wish you the best of luck and happiness in your life. As I'm taking one day at a time with my health, I hope you will be luckier than me in that aspect. God bless you and your family.
I haven't seen this episode in a while, but it changed how I look at it. My father has small cell lung cancer. Only around 5% are still alive after 5 years. My father now reaches 6 years and is quite healty. That shows how cancer treatment evolves.
Thought I was the only one who noticed that. Considering he's an addict & under extreme stress, watching his friend potentially die it shows a lot of character growth since last season, where he couldn't even face Cuddy the woman he supposedly loved without being high
That's the tragedy of Willson life. He knew hundreds, thousands maybe of people that had the best chances... Some of them, even with the best care, still ended with the worst case scenario. He knows the numbers, he knows how his own cancer works... He just doesn't want to end his life in misery. I can understand that. And that's why I love his character.
I always did avoid watching the Wilson cancer Arc of the series it's just too painful, watching something hes tried to help people with the majority of his life slowely destroy him.

This show definitely has some of the best writing I've ever seen for a TV show.
What I got from Wilson dying of cancer is that nearly all his adult life, Wilson escorted patient through their cancer battle. Some of them made it, but lived with the fear of it coming back and having to get evaluated every year. Some didn't make it, and Wilson had to put on some kind of brave, reassuring face on what he knew was a dreadful situation. In some way, seeing all that death perhaps tainted Wilson to the point that he never really bothered to build and preserve a happy life. He keeps getting married but ends up betraying those relationships because he sees happily ever after being denied to many on a daily basis, so why should he deserve any for himself. And that's why he consigns himself to an honest last few months rather than living a lie of futile chemo or radiation or surgery and being sick, miserable and bed ridden well ahead of the final moments.

I literally watched this yesterday and I'm bawling my eyes out because I'm at exactly the same place now that Wilson was. No more surgeries. No more hospital stays. I'm not fighting for myself anymore. I'm only fighting to spare my family the pain of me dying. I'm probably the first one who is actually considering death as a possible option. Just because I'm 25 doesn't mean that I'm definitely going to get through this.
My heart goes to you. I don't know how terminal is your condition. But when considering this, remember that 25 years is not even a third of the expected life span. So if you do recover, you will have decades where you could be happy, satisfied and pain-free. I'm 22 and am almost bound to bed for the last 3 years, and that what helps me through. Sending you my hugs and support
Wilson reacting to cancer exactly like house reacting to leg surgery. Theyre only opposites in superficial matters, like social graces. On things that matter, they usually agree.
The fact that House questioned Wilson's 2nd opinion but still support his ball-less comment to the doctor, shows he's a very loyal friend. That's a subtle hint before we see that in full effect, in the chemo episode....

The show's title cards kept getting darker as well (atleast on amazon prime where i watched it again), and the show tackled more difficult topics as the seasons went by. One great example of color in this show would be kutner's death, which was the darkest episode of the season imo (both thematically and in terms of color)
I can feel where Wilson is coming from I have 97%chance survival rate for testicular cancer. I still think about it everyday. now my doctors say it could be coming back
Two time testicular survivor. Second time was stage 3 metastasized. Doctor said I can’t count how many tumors you have. I figured out my survival rate was 83 percent. Like one round of Russian roulette at 45. I survived. This shoe was my best friend. My parents are gone. Hope you’re doing well my hunch is you are now. I’ve seen testicular cases that were fatal but by and large that’s rare. Just do the treatments. 😊
Beppo wasnt that bad the benadryl they gave me could know out a horse they told me but I still was awake. I gained 10 lbs only eating raviolis from chef boyardee. I didnt puke till 3 days after my last chemo and found out it was shingles. They gave me hydration as I went to my car the flood gates were opened. I think the worst was the saline flushes that tasted and smelled bad.

Hugh Laurie does a great job w his reaction as soon as Wilson starts talking about the dead cancer patients with 'good odds.' You can see how he now understands Wilson's desperation.
As a cancer patient myself with various forms of it. I concur with Dr. Wilson in this aspect. I had surgery for Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma, then it metamorphed to Gestational Choriocarcinoma. Now they tell me I have nodules in my lungs and Testicular Cancer as well. I am dying slowly but would I prefer to die at home or in a hospital bed from the treatments alone?
Watching this while recovering from chemo. Can't imagine trying an even stronger dose, but I respect tf out of Wilson's decision to not die in a hospital.
2 moments of note here: 1) When House realises that Wilson has mementos the remind him of patients who died. 2) When House quickly realises that Wilson is utterly serious, from just a few lines of dialogue. It convinces him to help Wilson.
This show got so unpleasant and depressing for a while, like I started completely hating Cuddy after the weird way she handled House's addiction and acting as if she didn't know what she was signing up for. But the Wilson cancer arc is so touching and good that the series can't be classified as anything other than a great show.
It is a bit weird how wilson once told Cameron not to get to close to patients because every time they go they will take a bit with you. But then his entire office is filled with things from Patients who had the same chances as he has so he might want to follow his own advice that he was giving Cameron. But then I love Houses reaction as he understood Wilson and instead of being an ... like usual he went like "youre an idiot.... we do it my place", telling him "no I am NOT making you go through this alone."
House: I agree with Wilson Doctor: my recommended treatment is sound House: I mean about the ball-less part. Explains the office. Freaking legendary XD
If House ever had a 2 hour special "TV movie" type thing, I would definitely love to play a part in it. House was one of my favorite shows years ago. Especially since my mom actually had Lupus and found it funny... that it was never lupus.
Poor Wilson had the saddest life. Love of his life died tragically. He blames.himself for his patients death. He was always helping and being kind and then he gets cancer. Poor sweet Wilson
True about the chemo killing you. Why put yourself thru what little time you have left being sick and the all the trips to radiation and chemo treatments. My brother had brain cancer. He started chemo abd radiation. He was so sick after a few treatments. He talked one on one with the oncologist. Just how much time am I buying myself going thru all this. Maybe six months,a year. Thank you Dr. I think I will live what few months I have not in hospitals but with my family. So ge did. When the time came,he had hospice come in. My sister n law called me one day an said I needed to get there, it was too late, the coroner an I arrived at the same time. I admire him for his bravery his concerns how the financial burden,the lived ones each taking time off from work to get him to the few treatments he did have. Tho his wife quit work to take care of him, he had gotten his disability started. He was only 59.
I think one of the reasons why Wilson is friends with House is because House is the Doctor that Wilson always wished he could be with respect to the fact that House never BSs people and House is willing to do anything and everything to succeed in curing his patients whereas Wilson always took the safer/kinder route.
House got to save most of his patients, While Wilson had to watch numerous of his "risk free" patients die from his same scenario. It's difficult to have hope

I was still confused by that last season . . . Wilson chose the crazy treatment option because it would either cure him or kill him . . . but he survived the chemo AND he still wasn't cured, so what was the point?
From a character writing perspective, it meant he was no longer afraid of death, as it was now an impending certainty. Had he not tried it and it failed, he may not have been willing to run off with House after he faked his death.
The "crazy" treatment option was basically "do the last resort thing". If he hadn't chosen this, he'd go through a slow process to attempt treatment, which would then eventually lead to the last resort option. If the last resort doesn't work, the path to get there is irrelevant. Choosing it right off the bat meant there was no option to slowly get weaker while the initial safer treatment failed. He eliminated the potential to suffer through an extra step in the process, by skipping it entirely, even though it had a chance to cure him.
I'm with Wilson, my father died of cancer, and my mother of diabetes. Mom always said a person should be able to get a "mercy shot", in a way that's what Wilson is trying to do, with a chance of survival. Without risk takers like him, medicine would never advance...
That is why they say Dr makes the worse patients. Wilson has recommended that treatment many times to patients but when it is his turn, he does want to do it.
I was in the hospital bed before I went into medicine I can see both sides.. the chances are insane you get one guy that gets shot 9 times on a drug deal and he makes it with no problem but you also get another who takes some shrapnel and he tanks and dies. it just is not fair, I went through chemo and it is awful. I don't know what I would do know, I would volunteer for another deployment before that.
I can understand hating the possibility that even with good chances you can die slowly in the hospital but still this should not explain his reaction. If we consider that the chances of survival presented are correct and not false, Wilson in his career would have meet too many people that really had positive survival rates, like 70+, and actually survived and far fewer that died. Yes a child had a 96% and died but almost everyone else in the same condition survived and he has seen them with his own eyes. He knows himself, his medical history, everyone's opinion, EVEN HE HIMSELF would treat a patient in that way because the chances are there and that's how the universe works. Yes if I throw a coin in the air it could technically land standing up but the chances of that happening are nearly impossible so the default thinking is either heads or tails, not the virtually impossible state. In his situation the chances are not that high but they are still veeeery positive in an early stage where the majority of people survived it. His reaction and overdosing is similar to dying of the cancer in the first place and that should be far more terrifying. Instead of going for a safer 70+% you try to do a 50-50 which if won rises the 70 higher.
I love how B9 is a hit like Wilson subconsciously would choose it thinking "benign" deep in the recesses of his mind possible unconsciously. And ofc House knows him well enough to guess correctly.
This is why I could never watch these videos. Wilson finds out he has cancer and he gives up all hope. He hears the treatment and storms out of the room. If I had cancer I’ll do anything to make sure I get cured. I’m not going to give up on myself. Does Wilson want to die?
It's more about 'how he dies' Wilson is head of Oncology, he spent years seeing people die slowly and painfully while on the 'standard' treatment. He'd rather die quickly from the high chemo dose than go through the long slow failure of regular treatment. It's similar to House being stubborn about removing his leg. Both thinking they know better (too an extent) and both trying to avoid being pitiable.
I like how house backed up Wilson even though Wilson was wrong with that first doctors treatment recommendation. Also, the writers giving him cancer was the worst decision they did.
Wilson's words hit so hard when I first watched this episode and made me really think about the many possibilities on how I would one day die. I came to the conclusion that no matter what happens, no matter how I die, it will not be in a f$!>ing hospital where you are seen and treated no differently than you would at the dmv as another number.
What really makes me more interested in this specific episode is that Hugh acted as the director of this one and the screen time of his character's presence got reduced. I really wanted to see him quash the authority of the patient's annoying mother granted by Foreman.
I have a question for doctors and med students: the treatment that Wilson was planning for himself could have actually worked? I don’t know anything about medicine but I always thought that it was useless and just painful... And I don’t understand why they already know that the cancer is lethal after just one chemo session.
No medical knowledge, but in the show it worked. House administered the treatment (far better chance of survival with House there rather than Wilson doing it to himself), Wilson survived and recovered. Though his cancer returned later in the series and was considered terminal, giving him six months to live when the show ended.

Beppo wasnt that bad the benadryl they gave me could know out a horse they told me but I still was awake. I gained 10 lbs only eating raviolis from chef boyardee. I didnt puke till 3 days after my last chemo and found out it was shingles. They gave me hydration as I went to my car the flood gates were opened. I think the worst was the saline flushes that tasted and smelled bad.

Hugh Laurie does a great job w his reaction as soon as Wilson starts talking about the dead cancer patients with 'good odds.' You can see how he now understands Wilson's desperation.
As a cancer patient myself with various forms of it. I concur with Dr. Wilson in this aspect. I had surgery for Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma, then it metamorphed to Gestational Choriocarcinoma. Now they tell me I have nodules in my lungs and Testicular Cancer as well. I am dying slowly but would I prefer to die at home or in a hospital bed from the treatments alone?
I’m very sorry. I went through chemo for testicular cancer last June. I know how it feels.

Watching this while recovering from chemo. Can't imagine trying an even stronger dose, but I respect tf out of Wilson's decision to not die in a hospital.
2 moments of note here:
1) When House realises that Wilson has mementos the remind him of patients who died.
2) When House quickly realises that Wilson is utterly serious, from just a few lines of dialogue. It convinces him to help Wilson.
This show got so unpleasant and depressing for a while, like I started completely hating Cuddy after the weird way she handled House's addiction and acting as if she didn't know what she was signing up for. But the Wilson cancer arc is so touching and good that the series can't be classified as anything other than a great show.

This show ended so long ago but it’s great to see these cuts come out so. It’s awesome.
It is a bit weird how wilson once told Cameron not to get to close to patients because every time they go they will take a bit with you. But then his entire office is filled with things from Patients who had the same chances as he has so he might want to follow his own advice that he was giving Cameron. But then I love Houses reaction as he understood Wilson and instead of being an ... like usual he went like "youre an idiot.... we do it my place", telling him "no I am NOT making you go through this alone."

This is the reason why sick doctors shouldn't be the attending physicians itself. Wilson's case here was a perfect example.
Poor Wilson had the saddest life. Love of his life died tragically. He blames.himself for his patients death. He was always helping and being kind and then he gets cancer. Poor sweet Wilson

True about the chemo killing you. Why put yourself thru what little time you have left being sick and the all the trips to radiation and chemo treatments. My brother had brain cancer. He started chemo abd radiation. He was so sick after a few treatments. He talked one on one with the oncologist. Just how much time am I buying myself going thru all this. Maybe six months,a year. Thank you Dr. I think I will live what few months I have not in hospitals but with my family. So ge did. When the time came,he had hospice come in. My sister n law called me one day an said I needed to get there, it was too late, the coroner an I arrived at the same time. I admire him for his bravery his concerns how the financial burden,the lived ones each taking time off from work to get him to the few treatments he did have. Tho his wife quit work to take care of him, he had gotten his disability started. He was only 59.

I think one of the reasons why Wilson is friends with House is because House is the Doctor that Wilson always wished he could be with respect to the fact that House never BSs people and House is willing to do anything and everything to succeed in curing his patients whereas Wilson always took the safer/kinder route.

I was still confused by that last season . . . Wilson chose the crazy treatment option because it would either cure him or kill him . . . but he survived the chemo AND he still wasn't cured, so what was the point?
From a character writing perspective, it meant he was no longer afraid of death, as it was now an impending certainty. Had he not tried it and it failed, he may not have been willing to run off with House after he faked his death.
The "crazy" treatment option was basically "do the last resort thing". If he hadn't chosen this, he'd go through a slow process to attempt treatment, which would then eventually lead to the last resort option. If the last resort doesn't work, the path to get there is irrelevant. Choosing it right off the bat meant there was no option to slowly get weaker while the initial safer treatment failed. He eliminated the potential to suffer through an extra step in the process, by skipping it entirely, even though it had a chance to cure him.
I can’t believe how agonizing Wilson had been living daily with those memorabilia and to know he has cancer. An oncologist with cancer, oof!

I'm with Wilson, my father died of cancer, and my mother of diabetes. Mom always said a person should be able to get a "mercy shot", in a way that's what Wilson is trying to do, with a chance of survival. Without risk takers like him, medicine would never advance...

why did this show have end? it was so good. both entertaining and educational
I was in the hospital bed before I went into medicine I can see both sides.. the chances are insane you get one guy that gets shot 9 times on a drug deal and he makes it with no problem but you also get another who takes some shrapnel and he tanks and dies. it just is not fair, I went through chemo and it is awful. I don't know what I would do know, I would volunteer for another deployment before that.
I can understand hating the possibility that even with good chances you can die slowly in the hospital but still this should not explain his reaction.
If we consider that the chances of survival presented are correct and not false, Wilson in his career would have meet too many people that really had positive survival rates, like 70+, and actually survived and far fewer that died. Yes a child had a 96% and died but almost everyone else in the same condition survived and he has seen them with his own eyes.
He knows himself, his medical history, everyone's opinion, EVEN HE HIMSELF would treat a patient in that way because the chances are there and that's how the universe works. Yes if I throw a coin in the air it could technically land standing up but the chances of that happening are nearly impossible so the default thinking is either heads or tails, not the virtually impossible state. In his situation the chances are not that high but they are still veeeery positive in an early stage where the majority of people survived it.
His reaction and overdosing is similar to dying of the cancer in the first place and that should be far more terrifying. Instead of going for a safer 70+% you try to do a 50-50 which if won rises the 70 higher.
The only thing that ruins life is the fact there are other people in it. Lucky for some, we find a House to help us along the way.

This is why I could never watch these videos. Wilson finds out he has cancer and he gives up all hope. He hears the treatment and storms out of the room. If I had cancer I’ll do anything to make sure I get cured. I’m not going to give up on myself. Does Wilson want to die?
It's more about 'how he dies' Wilson is head of Oncology, he spent years seeing people die slowly and painfully while on the 'standard' treatment. He'd rather die quickly from the high chemo dose than go through the long slow failure of regular treatment.
It's similar to House being stubborn about removing his leg. Both thinking they know better (too an extent) and both trying to avoid being pitiable.
The doctor that Wilson talked to first was doing exactly what Wilson always did. Unfortunately Wilson has never been on the receiving end

Wilson's words hit so hard when I first watched this episode and made me really think about the many possibilities on how I would one day die. I came to the conclusion that no matter what happens, no matter how I die, it will not be in a f$!>ing hospital where you are seen and treated no differently than you would at the dmv as another number.

What really makes me more interested in this specific episode is that Hugh acted as the director of this one and the screen time of his character's presence got reduced. I really wanted to see him quash the authority of the patient's annoying mother granted by Foreman.

I have a question for doctors and med students: the treatment that Wilson was planning for himself could have actually worked? I don’t know anything about medicine but I always thought that it was useless and just painful... And I don’t understand why they already know that the cancer is lethal after just one chemo session.
No medical knowledge, but in the show it worked. House administered the treatment (far better chance of survival with House there rather than Wilson doing it to himself), Wilson survived and recovered. Though his cancer returned later in the series and was considered terminal, giving him six months to live when the show ended.
