How is it you win 86 million and the tax is higher than what you get to keep ,and then they try to justify that by saying every ticket sold is given to worthy causes which is great but they might just as well say your lotto this week is 42.5 million cash instead of 86million when in fact you arent actually getting that amount.

kiri ellis kind of a "tax," yes..but really, the state of pennsylvania does not tax winners, as he said. but it's the lottery commission rules: if they took the $86 million divided up over 20 to 30 years [depending on the game and/or the state if it's a 1 state game] then the lottery gives them the advertised jackpot amount [divided into those several years/annual payments], minus federal gov't taxes..but if they want their winnings all at once, then there is what amounts to be a penalty, so they get less monies from the lottery commission..minus whatever the amount, the federal gov't takes [they steal too much of it, imho] in federal taxes. so always federal taxes and state taxes, too - except with states like pennsylvania...and only a handful of other states also do not tax winners but most states do - and it totally sucks eggs.

kiri ellis for those who dont know but play the lottery.... they SHOULD know that the jackpot prize that is advertised is ANNUITY...... in other words... you will get yearly payments (26 annual pymts for mega millions, 29 for powerball i think)... so over the course of the 26-29 years the lottery will basically pay you, with interest, "X" number of millions a year for the set number of years. the culmination of the payments will come out to be about the 86 million. the cash on hand that they use to pay you is the LUMP SUM CASH AMOUNT...... in this case about 42.5 million.... its the same 42.5 million that the lottery is going to use to pay you over the annuity period. So instead of having the lottery invest it for you... you can opt to take that lump sum your self.... minus taxes of course... they dont pay state tax and federal is roughly around 25%... so take home after taxes is approximately 31.8 million.

And they don't get $42m either! That's the amt BEFORE tax! If the tax is around 40%, they took home around $17m only!

You didn't even think that one through 17 double would be 35. If you would've thought that way you could've realized that 17 was well above 40% because it is even above 50% (half).

@irepbmore in canada when you win the lottery you have to show up for the press no way around it. then the province you are from puts you in the news paper from every city in that province. If I won the lottery it would be hard and would have to get my name changed. we; my husband and I are the only ones in our city with our last names.

Are you arguing about something that happened 10 years ago?
      1) the bearer of the ticket is/are the winner(s). Are you proposing they stole your ticket after you had it and posted a picture online?
      2) you are only able to claim for a max of one year.
