  • In this video, I have explained about the fully automatic transfer switch (ATS) for single phase system.
    A transfer switch (ATS) is an electrical switch that switches a load between two sources. An Automatic Transfer Switch is often installed where a backup generator is located, so that the generator may provide temporary electrical power if the utility source fails.
    When utility power is interrupted, the automatic transfer switch immediately senses the problem and signals the generator to start. Afterward, it detects when the utility power is returned, the automatic transfer switch retransfer to the utility power and turn off the generator.
    If you have any questions about the Automatic changeover switch, please comment below the video. I will answer your questions.

      There is capacitor controlled voltage regulation. But still whould put a delay in so the generator doesn’t start immediately.

    You have electrical interlock between contactors, that is good. I would also have mechanical interlock between the contactors.
    Better still is have a set of N/O and N/C contacts on the contactor.
    Then its very simple to do change over.

  • @amm9613
    @amm9613 Před 3 lety +1

    Lots of time delay comments which I agree with but the elephant in the room is the 5 pin relay, if that failed the gen will start , collide with utility and then you’re going to need a new one. Great concept, just needs fine tuned.

    • @thekingwc
      @thekingwc Před 2 lety

      It’s weird setup. Seems flawed. I would hook up power companies contractor directly to its own coil instead and leave everything else the same. When power fails generator contractor will be allowed to close. As long as power company supplies power generator contractor can’t close, whether generator is on or off.

    • @thekingwc
      @thekingwc Před 2 lety

      Wait, it seems that they both can’t close at the same time. What I don’t like is, it doesn’t automatically transfer back to power grid when power comes back. My way is better.

    • @thekingwc
      @thekingwc Před 2 lety +1

      So, it just hit me that when power company comes back on the signal to the relay stops and the generator turns off. It will automatically transfer back to power company. There’s nothing wrong with this setup.

    Takes me back to 1985 when I introduced auto shore/generator change-over on our marine switch panels. Live back then was far simpler with regs, two pole 30 amp 240 VAC relay with coil wired to gen contacts. Start gen, when voltage came up it would close contacts and select gen, stop gen it returns to mains supply. Or you could wire to select mains if mains became available, otherwise gen supply was available.
    Like the graphics.

    Do not make an ATS without mechanical interlock and timer. Once the utility power fails the generator start signal to be given after a time delay. Mechanical interlock to be provided between the power contactor , we cannot rely on electrical interlock, its dangerous.

    Far simpler is to use a DPDT relay feeding the desired load, with the coil driven by the generator. Generator not running, power delivered to load through NC contacts, generator delivers through NO contacts (Load is on COM contacts). Fully automatic and completely isolated and functions on generator start/run only.

    No, the idea is good but it does not work for commercial standard gasoline or diesel generators. The only way it works is for the generator to have the "Remote Start" option. A generator without "Remote Start" must consider a pulse for ignition and then bring the ignition coil to ground for shutdown. The ignition coil cannot be kept energized because the starter motor will burn out. And if the ignition coil is not grounded, the generator will only stop due to lack of fuel. I don't know of any generator for home use with the Remote Start option.
