Pragmatism: Can you believe without evidence?

  • In which we discuss William James' argument in "The Will to Believe" that it can be permissible to believe without evidence in certain special cases, in the context of WK Clifford's argument that you should never believe anything with insufficient evidence, and the ethics of belief. We also discuss pragmatism and pragmatic encroachment as the doctrine that practical considerations can influence epistemic actions and values, and doxastic voluntarism, the view that in some cases you can make choices about what to believe.

    Great pace with clarity in explanation of subjects! Thank you! Ok, so that was supernatural miracles by prophets, saints, etc. Sort of like sure shot to eliminate almost any doubt!
