    The Crown of Thorns was able to be evacuated from the recent Notre Dame fire thanks to a human chain of Parisian police and city officials. What intrigues you the most about this ancient artifact?

      Ring Dave Even if Jesus was real, and the stories about him in the bible really happened, most of the relics are probably fake. Owning a religious relic in the ancient days would have yielded tremendous political leverage and prestige. And creating a fake was probably trivial when the audience would believe in anything based on “faith”. To me, it doesn’t diminish the historical value of the relic though.

      The "Early" Churches all had relics of some kind. A piece of the cross, a manuscript of the bible or a piece of cloth - pilgrimage between the churches to see the relics were a early form of tourism.

    • @Gee-xb7rt
      @Gee-xb7rt Před 5 lety +3

      Its not an artifact, its a relic. The earliest documentation is when it passed from Baldwin II to Louis IX. The Louis' liked to posture themselves in the church, so much so when you see the Notre Dame altar, there is the Pieta in the center, and Louis XIII is on the left and Louis XIV is on the right. You can find a stained glass window of Louis IX bringing the crown to France in Sainte-Chapelle, a chapel Louis IX built to house this and a piece of the cross.
      The story of the "helmet' is recent, they finally let people test the species, and the part Notre Dame has is rush, the various thorns that are supposed to be from the crown are a different species, as rush has no thorns. The Byzantine leaders gifted thorns, they are spread all over the place. So to make up for the discrepency of two different species they decided the rush must be a headband and the ziziphus formed a helmet extending from the headband.
      Fun fact -- places named Saint Louis, San Luis, etc. are Named after Louis IX.

    I am still so very saddened about what happened, but at the same time I’m grateful that at least part of the church survived the blaze, including the two bell towers in the front. Heartbreaking about the spire being lost (although that was added later in the 18th-19th centuries). From what I heard, the entire roof is gone (it was made from wood) and a fair amount of the inside is also gone (also made from wood), and approx. 2/3 of the structure is still standing.

      « A little bit » is a French expression that he translated but means nothing in English. It means that he don’t want to brag about it and his humble because in fact the relics listed by the church are deeply analyzed. And I mean by scientists, historians and other professionals that I can’t write the name right. All relics presented in a Catholic Church goes threw a very long analysis to trace the origins in the history and age tested. This crown was tested with Carbon-14 and traced to an era around 200 years before and after the events of the Christ. So yes it could be not the one but definitely from that era. And it’s the same with other relics. U would be amazed by the number of potentiels relics the Vatican has in stocks but don’t show because there are not approved by professionals.
