The Crown of Thorns was able to be evacuated from the recent Notre Dame fire thanks to a human chain of Parisian police and city officials. What intrigues you the most about this ancient artifact?
I'm with the French people in this difficult time...
Thanks dear National Geographic for this unique video and for Your very important job for us !
OK dood
Human history is made of layers and shells. It is time for saint catherine to reborn and rise from ashes as it never dies. Glorious witness to glorious Paris. Eternel and Forever
Watching this video brought tears to my eyes & pain in my heart. With this being Holy Week my thoughts & prayers go out to everyone in Paris with the loss of such a beautiful & historical Catholic Church....
What intrigues me most is that people think these artifacts, like the Shroud of Turin, are legit.

@@abdelazizmetali1938 yup, but you are not a king, if you will say: "I'm the weakest king on earth".
It takes more than a crown of gold or a throne to make a king. What makes a king is the strength of his heart, his courage, and his love to his people.

Ring Dave Even if Jesus was real, and the stories about him in the bible really happened, most of the relics are probably fake. Owning a religious relic in the ancient days would have yielded tremendous political leverage and prestige. And creating a fake was probably trivial when the audience would believe in anything based on “faith”. To me, it doesn’t diminish the historical value of the relic though.
No way of proving anything.
@@dafrasier1 Romans kept logs of each and everything major or minor events of that time. There were special people to write manuscripts and to note such events. But what historians and researchers found that except the Bible there are no written accounts of Christ or the stories mentioned in the bible related to the Christ.

May God restore and open again this Notre Dame Church according to God Holy Will. Amen.
It's a shame to see this part of history lost in a blaze. Glad these relics were saved, and that Notre Dame will be restored.

For the last 20 years if I find myself doing something smart, epic, kind, cool, badass, or thoughtful. I have Morgan Freeman narrating it in my head. It’s great! Of course when I’m being a clueless idiot I have David Attenborough narrating it as if he were doing a documentary for aliens who are tuning in. As I frantically try to dig the M&M out of my recliner I hear David Attenborough in my head say “the human finally decides the M&M just isn’t worth the effort”.
@@mcuthor7831 You've been having a little bit too much screen time my friend..
Oh my Morgan Freeman! What a timely video.
I love Gothic architecture and I hope I'll visit Notre Dame one day !
I didn't know this artifact even existed. Such an informative and relevant video 👍
The "Early" Churches all had relics of some kind. A piece of the cross, a manuscript of the bible or a piece of cloth - pilgrimage between the churches to see the relics were a early form of tourism.
Its not an artifact, its a relic. The earliest documentation is when it passed from Baldwin II to Louis IX. The Louis' liked to posture themselves in the church, so much so when you see the Notre Dame altar, there is the Pieta in the center, and Louis XIII is on the left and Louis XIV is on the right. You can find a stained glass window of Louis IX bringing the crown to France in Sainte-Chapelle, a chapel Louis IX built to house this and a piece of the cross.
The story of the "helmet' is recent, they finally let people test the species, and the part Notre Dame has is rush, the various thorns that are supposed to be from the crown are a different species, as rush has no thorns. The Byzantine leaders gifted thorns, they are spread all over the place. So to make up for the discrepency of two different species they decided the rush must be a headband and the ziziphus formed a helmet extending from the headband.
Fun fact -- places named Saint Louis, San Luis, etc. are Named after Louis IX.
Then I guess you have never heard of Sacre Coeur either

I love Morgan Freeman and Notre Dame Cathedral. Sanctuary , Sanctuary , Sanctuary.
Early Religious movements were the historians for mankind. Monk's translations of literature allowed many people and cultures to learn about others.
The Church, Mosque and Temples recorded history through the centuries. We are interdependent on each other to keep those stories alive.
Not necessarily. But they did put histories and knowledge into libraries and then when they were destroyed, it was a huge loss.
Monks translations of literature allowed them to twist the original
text to something more acceptable to their church i.e. Rome
Still gives me goosebumps.

Added to my bucket list for 2020
I am still so very saddened about what happened, but at the same time I’m grateful that at least part of the church survived the blaze, including the two bell towers in the front. Heartbreaking about the spire being lost (although that was added later in the 18th-19th centuries). From what I heard, the entire roof is gone (it was made from wood) and a fair amount of the inside is also gone (also made from wood), and approx. 2/3 of the structure is still standing.
Crown of thorns saved. Thank you Jesus 🌹

@@apexashwin joke aside !
‘it was analysed, a little bit, a few years ago, but we are CERTAIN’
« A little bit » is a French expression that he translated but means nothing in English. It means that he don’t want to brag about it and his humble because in fact the relics listed by the church are deeply analyzed. And I mean by scientists, historians and other professionals that I can’t write the name right. All relics presented in a Catholic Church goes threw a very long analysis to trace the origins in the history and age tested. This crown was tested with Carbon-14 and traced to an era around 200 years before and after the events of the Christ. So yes it could be not the one but definitely from that era. And it’s the same with other relics. U would be amazed by the number of potentiels relics the Vatican has in stocks but don’t show because there are not approved by professionals.
