Apostasy Punishment in a Liberal State?

  • This is a spin on the usual question posed to Muslim traditionalists of what the punishment of apostasy is in an Islamic state. The question under investigation in this video is the extent to which social contract models (in liberal states) could allow punitive punishment for 'anti-state' expressions in a public domain.
This is what John Locke had to say in his letter concerning tolerance:
The case of idolaters, in respect of the Jewish commonwealth [i.e. the Kingdom of Ancient Israel], falls under a double consideration. The first is of those who, being initiated in the Mosaical rites, and made citizens of that commonwealth, did afterwards apostatise from the worship of the God of Israel. These were proceeded against as traitors and rebels, guilty of no less than high treason. For the commonwealth of the Jews, different in that from all others, was an absolute theocracy; nor was there, or could there be, any difference between that commonwealth and the Church [i.e. the Jewish religion]. The laws established there concerning the worship of One Invisible Deity were the civil laws of that people and a part of their political government, in which God Himself was the legislator. Now, if any one can shew me where there is a commonwealth at this time, constituted upon that foundation, I will acknowledge that the ecclesiastical laws do there unavoidably become a part of the civil, and that the subjects of that government both may and ought to be kept in strict conformity with that Church by the civil power.
Immanuel Kant says in the metaphysics of morals:
A Law which is so holy and inviolable that it is practically a crime even to Cast doubt upon it, or to suspend its operation for a moment, is represented of itself as necessarily derived from some Supreme, unblameable Lawgiver. And this is the meaning of the maxim, ‘All Authority is from God ‘ which proposition does not express the historical foundation of the Civil Constitution, but an ideal Principle of the Practical Reason. It may be otherwise rendered thus, ‘It is a Duty to obey the Law of the existing Legislative Power, be its origin what it may.

I'm a Christian but I am at an age where I am really researching religions deeply. I guess I am wanting to read the quaran but I don't read Arabic and ive heard alot of the English translations are false. I'm not looking to convert I just want to understand the similarities and the differenceses. I am really enjoying Mr hijabs videos very informative and educational and the debates I perticularly enjoy because of the patience he has, he doesn't need to be rude or aggressive to get his point across and I respect that.

I like Hijab, he's clearly a well-read, smart guy. However, sometimes I think he uses his philosophical arguments as a bit of a smokescreen. It seems to be a debating tactic of his to dissipate the argument into very abstract concepts in which it's very hard to prove, or disprove, anything. This subsequently confuses the opponent (particularly the characters in Speakers' Corner) and he wins the argument! But interesting video nevertheless.

Thanks for the references in the description box bro. I'm currently studying this. Although I feel most of this video wouldn't make sense to laity who know nothing about political science/philosophy so you should break it down more by explaining how integral philosophical liberalism is to western society, culture and the way everyone thinks. The ideas of Locke, Hobbes etc are intertwined in the fabric of our society and thinking but most don't know, so first step is helping them to acknowledge that. Then we can critique it. I feel this will make your content more accessible and beneficial to the public. BarakAllaahu feek

    THE TEN GEMS OF PARADISE
1.Subhan Allahi wa bi Hamdi, SubhanAllahi’l Adheem"
"Glory be to Allah and Praise be to Him, the Greatest, is free from imperfection".
"The Prophet (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa- ala ālihi wa-sallam) said, there are two phrases, which are beloved of the Most Merciful Allah, light on the tongue, yet heavy on the scale of reward-
    (Hadith Al Bukhari)
    2. Seeking forgiveness by saying "AstaghfurAllah"
We are all in constant need of "Allah subhanu wa ta’ala’s forgiveness!
"The Prophet (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa- ala ālihi wa-sallam) used to seek forgiveness 70 times a day, and he was a sinless person."
    (Hadith Bukhari)
Imagine if we used every spare minute we have in one day to say(Astaghfirallah)
    3. "La Hawla wa La Quwatta illah billah"
There is no power and strength except with Allah.
The Prophet(ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa- ala ālihi wa-sallam) said that this is one of the treasures of Paradise. -
    (Hadith Bukhari)
    4. "Surah Fatiha" can be recited in a minute
The Prophet (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa- ala ālihi wa-sallam) said that "Al Fatiha" is a cure for every poison-
    (Hadith Al Bukhari)
    5. "The Darud Ibrahim.
    Allahuma Salli ala Nabiyina" "Muhammadin-""
O Allah send peace and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa- ala ālihi wa-sallam)
"The Prophet (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa- ala ālihi wa-sallam) said:
He who reads a single darood upon me,
Almighty Allah blessed him ten times, he is increased ten times in the stages of Jannah and ten of his sins are forgiven-
    (Hadith Nisa'i)
    6.( Alhamdulilah )
    Gratitude is an important virtue!
    7. "SubhanAllahi wa bi hamdihi adada khalqihi wa ridaa’ nafsihi wa zeenata arshihi wa midada kalimatihi "-
"Allah is free from imperfection and I begin with His praise, as many times as the number of His creatures in accordance with His Good Pleasure, equal to the weight of, His Throne and equal to the ink that may be used in recording the words (for His Praise)
Reciting this praise 3 times in the morning will weigh heavier on the scale than doing dhikr from the dawn prayer to forenoon-
    (Hadith Sahih Muslim)
    8. "Subhan Allahi wa bihamdihi" -
"Allah is free from imperfection and His is the Praise..
The Prophet (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa- ala ālihi wa-sallam) said: if these words are recited 100 times a day, one’s sins will be forgiven even if they were equal to the extent of the foam of the ocean-
    (Hadith Bukhari and Muslim)
    9. "Surah Ikhlas" can be recited in a minute,,
    (Surah 112)
It is known to have the merit and reward of reciting 1/3 of the Quran-
    (Hadith Al Bukhari)
Note: this does not serve the purpose of reciting the entire Qur’an rather it is 1/3 in reward,,
    10." La illaha illAllah -
There is no God but Allah"
"If everything in the Seven heavens, besides Allah were placed on a scale and the statement "La illaha illAllah" was placed on the other side of it, the statement would weigh more -
    (Hadith Ibn Hibban and Hakim)
"Make use of every minute that we have! Lest that on the Day of Judgement we regret that one minute we lost, that one deed that could take Us to Jannah!
" May Allah swt, make Us all the owner of these Gems and make it easy to enter Janatul Firdus"
    (AAMEEN YA RABB)

If indeed what you say Muhammad is true why do some Muslims go crazy when people are preaching about what they believe and become physically violent towards other religions. They consider it to be disrespectful to oppose Islam and the Prophet Muhammad as well as Allah. This is contradictory to what you're saying because it proves time and time when you see people act out physically towards other religions and I'm not just pinpointing Muslims but when I turn on CZcams this is what I see from the Muslim aspect

Muslims from Speakers Corner is what I have experienced and from CZcams and I just don't understand that is a religion of peace and love you get when somebody leaves Islam or opposes Islam an the Prophet Muhammad. Muslims have gotten physical at Speakers Corner one of which they knocked a brother off a pedestal preaching that was a Christian or others that are preaching they yell obscenities and call them Liars of what they believe in and it just doesn't seem like a religion of peace and love
