In Japan, rap music continues to grow as new rappers and producers emerge almost every day. Japan has emulated this American subculture like a science - from fashion to slang, to the grills, blunts and hoes we see today. Representing one's turf, or 'projects' is also apparent as rappers are beginning to form crews in their danchi, or public housing projects all throughout Japan. Although danchi housing can often be occupied by middle-class residents, most of Japan's low-income households end up living there due to cheaper rent, thus they are generally known as slums.
Up and coming rappers Kohh Yellow T20 and his partner-in-crime, Mony Horse are two rappers who fulfill the image of your average street rapper. They come from broken households, and were raised in Tokyo's housing projects, often surrounded by drugs and violence. VICE heads to the Tokyo suburb of Kita Ward and investigates the living conditions of these projects and how the pair are trying to succeed through rap music.

They do that because if they have lower crime rate, they get better funding, if they actually show the crime rate in the area, that area police, would get lower funding, I know it's fucked up.

Which Koreans came afterwards.

    KOHHってリリックも好きだけど、服のセンスが黒人じゃなくて、欧米の上流階級のバカな御曹司が黒人に憧れてやりそうな格好、って感じがするから僕はすごく格好いいと思う。ステージに立つ人がそういう夢があって面白い格好してるとやっぱワクワクする。それがもし、この映像で匂わせてるような裏稼業による収益によるものだとしたら、違法行為はもっとコソコソやって欲しい。もし捕まって彼らの曲が聞けなくなったら楽しみが減るし、そしたらまた「友達がやってるブランドです」とかいってマンハッタンの夜景みたいなプリントのTシャツ着たラッパーばっかになって、そしたら日本のヒップホップ・シーンはまたおかしくなるし、初対面で日本語ラップが好きって言うと、相手がちょっと困って音楽じゃない話題にすりかえられたりするあの空気はもう味わいたくない。

    @MaoKittyMaoMao Před 9 lety +299

Why are there so many comments about how he doesn't have it bad just because their projects look nice or that they're copying black people?
Firstly, it's not a contest. You shouldn't brag about who had it worse. If anything, you should be able to empathize and know that no matter where you are in the world, there is struggle everywhere. It can look nice enough on the outside and still have people on the inside who have problems.
Secondly, music isn't restricted to just one demographic. Music is art. That's something universal. We should want others to take something that's commonly a part of us and make something themselves so we'll have more innovation. More importantly, music is supposed to be something that transcends race, language, and cultures. It's not something to be kept with one and not given to the other. Music is here to teach us, to guide us, to uplift us.
I guess I can understand the xenophobia a little, but the world is much bigger than what y'all are making it.

Are you really telling me to not feel a little weird about something I would pay good money to live in being considered projects? Like you said theres struggle everywhere, but there are certainly different levels of struggle. This doesn't stack up to New Orleans, Flint, Detroit for example... That is CRIPPLING poverty. Acknowledging that doesn't mean you are making it a contest...

Both of those are first world countries, so I'm not sure why you are comparing them to places like Haiti, Nairobi, etc.

    • @sohandeshpande7817

foreigners shouldn't judge J-rap based on this video. hip hop culture and music have been around since the 80s, and the golden age has just ended. Hip hop is entering a new phase in Japan, where artists have more freedom to express their lives free of taboo, meaning they are beginning to open up about crime, serious social issues, drugs and gang problems. While gangsta rap is big in the states, it has a growing element in Japan as many artists are actually living similar lives being in connection to local gangs, or being the offspring of gang members. While J-rap got its fundamentals from America many years ago, it has taken a life of its own.
The significance of this video shows that hip hop is becoming mainstream in Japan as well, the artist they are showcasing, "KOHH" doesn't necessarily have the musical qualifications a rapper may desire, but has the experience and troubled life one would, and is able to express through rap.
Dutch Montana, you'd have to be dumb to think he's taking the game seriously. Have a look at Lil B. If you take that nigga seriously and are unable to appreciate him for his satirical position on hip hop, then you don't deserve to listen to the genre. Japanese rappers are no different from any other fool.
tldr; J-rap has its Biggie Smalls' and it also has its Will Smiths.
    RIP Tokona X & Nujabes

I don't understand what "Taking the game seriously" is supposed to mean. What they perceive in Japan as "taking the game seriously" is a lot different than what Americans perceive. They rap, they have fun, and they talk about things in their life, is that any different than American rappers? Tell me what Dutch Montana raps about that mainstream Americans aren't rapping about that makes him "not take the game seriously." Last I checked, 99% of American rappers just talk about weed and hoes. Besides, Hip-Hop culture is small in Japan, always has been, K Dub Shine isn't some multi millionaire rapper with millions of fans, and he's out of your so called "Golden Age." Why do you think it was significant that Samurai Champloo had a Hip-Hop focus? Because it's not common. So let these dudes have fun and bring the genre to more mainstream success. Also, free my homie Dutch Montana.

He told the story about how the police made him and his friends paint over the graffiti they made. That shows that Japan cares about keeping their country nice, even the areas where people are slightly below middle class are kept clean and not forgotten about and ignored by the rest of the country.

Hip hop stopped being a strictly American art form long time ago, just like it stopped being a strictly east coast art form even earlier. Because Hip Hop often (or at least used to) vocalize the struggles of the lower class it resonates with a lot of people. Heck, as corny as they might seem, they are more authentic than a lot of American rappers--look at Drake, hes from a fucking upscale neighborhood in Canada and he acts like hes a thug from Atlanta... and even worse, people actually buy into it. So I say, hats off to these guys; do whatever gets you ahead in life.
