  • The 1976 Chevy El Camino is finally finished..for now. I install a stereo, gauges, speakers, tailgate straps then take it for a test drive. I go over how much it cost to build this vehicle.

The radio you got in the original area, looks like a pioneer K P 2000 series, i have one like it in my 73 SS Chevelle , got it in the mid 80s killer system back in the day.

Nice 4th generation El Camino restoration for everyday driver. El Camino is like first SUV, sport truck.
When you drive pickup truck 90% of the time bed empty, you will appreciate coil spring ride. Full box
frame, universal parts shared with Chevelle, Malibu, Monte Carlo, tows up to 5000 #, low entry height,
all great features. At nearly 50 years old, El Caminos just need TLC with car guy like you.

Before you put in a cd player radio check the in-line fuse on the am/fm cassette deck already in the car. That's most likely the reason it's not working. That way you don't have to build a box/console for a cd player. The El Camino has come a long way -- you did a great job fixing a lot of issues!!! Well done!!

The Elco turned out great for such a budget vehicle. You might drive it some more and see if that driveshaft yoke frees up. It’s supposed to be a slip joint on the splines of the trans output shaft so maybe flexing the driveline while driving will break it free and let you get it out. Hopefully by hammering that yoke into the trans there is no damage to the trans output shaft.

Maybe drill a hole in the input shaft and soak it with some kind of lubricant.?
I’m still waiting on Nomad burnouts!

Maybe disconnect the back of the driveshaft and connect a nice strong rope to it and then pull that rope with one of your other vehicles putting a bunch of backwards tension on the driveshaft. Then hit it with the hammer etc and see if she'll come off.

Give this a try , mix 50/50 transmission fluid and Acetone, use a paint brush and apply heavy on the yoke and end of tailshaft/seal.....wait 24 hours and repeat.....it will work its way in and loosen that rust, I've had good luck with this combo for breaking rusted items loose.

Look up classic car stereos, you can get factory looking stereos with Bluetooth to hook to your phone.for $300.00 .much nicer appearance than building a box & drilling holes in your dash.

    Hey Lee,
Hope you are doing well Nikki seems to be getting better at navigating around.
Did you try to jack the rear of the El Camino up and let the rear diff hang? I had a driveshaft “seize” up like that but the hanging of the rear end put the driveshaft at a good enough angle and pulled it back on the input shaft that I was able to knock it back and get it loose. Hope this helps.
