      I second that recommendation. Why would a noob want to have a scope for scoping what sorts of circuits for what reasons? And what do they do about the measurements once they are procured. Stay very very basic.

    Hi! As I pointed out in the video on Sync, this video is just excellent for the beginner, such as I am new to the type of scope. I also have the vintage Heathkit IO 4235 analog scope that I have been using. You have talked about the -3dB as concerning the frequency of this scope, also another area in which I have a hard time understanding, But you have help me to understand what this means. Thank you for this great video... Keep up the good work....

    I experience a lot of the same health problems you do caused by a condition called systemic Lupus. I am male, so that makes my condition relatively rare (occurring in men roughly 10% of the time). What I’m getting at is functioning with these kinds of problems sucks and makes basic life function exponentially harder for us! I respect that regardless of your condition you pull forward anyway. I do the same (or try), but people like yourself are inspiring to me so thank you! Oh, and thanks for the great subject matter in you videos too, I learn a lot! Cheers!

    Hiya Paul, Thanks for the much needed education! Love the way you descrbe things and find you very easy to understand. If you ever get the free time, is there any chance you could do a quick Vid on how to measure 'Phase' please? I make my own Metal detector coils and would love to be able to work out the phase shift between the TX coil and the RX coil but unfortunately there's not much information about on how to do this. The Oscilloscope I have is the Hantek DSO 5102P but I'm struggling to find tuitional material on how to use it properly,,the manual is still baffling me,,lol. Lookingforward to more of your Vids,,,,Good luck with your health for the future and best regards,,,Marty,,England.

    Thanks for the vid. I bought a nice oscilloscope at a pawn shop and it's been a paperweight for a couple of years. I couldn't find any videos like this at the time. Most seemed to assume prior knowledge of which I had none. Still don't know how to measure a circuit and do anything useful with it. Couple that with the fact I don't have an isolation transformer to plug it into, which means I could apparently fry the thing as best as I understand it, therefore I'm reticent to play around with any ac signal or measure one on a circuit board. In short, my education on the subject is at a standstill. I'll be checking to see if you have more of these great beginner/dummies videos on your channel so hopefully one day I can do something useful with mine. Thanks again Paul.

    Many thanks for that Paul.. Just got a new Hantek scope (the first scope I've ever owned), and as you'll know there is 'no' book of instructions with it.. You're correct in saying it's a lot to take in , and appreciate you're going to do another tutorial, which I look forward to. Best of luck with the medics.. I have had kidney stones and infections and know what you must be feeling like right now.

    Can you please tell me How we measure AC voltage by oscilloscope like Hantek 6022BE ? why it shows offset AC signal and the altitude is only 102 V instead of 120 V? thanks for your reply.

    Great tutorial. Can you please do a video on how to drive a quartz crystal like you have for your probe here? There is nothing worthwhile on CZcams but these crystals can be salvaged anywhere. I noticed you are using caps and resistors, but why and what are the values and the input voltage to drive the crystal. Thank you very much. Wish you great health.

    Very good sir, I've been watching your videos and I think you do a great job. Do a practical use for an oscilloscope IE why use it over a multimeter, what does it tell you more? Real uses to fault find circuits with actual problems. Hope your health is good. PS I got some drugs do same stuff to me for my back problems lol

    Hey, this is a great serios of videos. I hope your surgery went well! :) I have a couple of questions that I really hope you or someone here can answer. One is a more general question, and the other is a specific application of that same question. For background, I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to electricity and some aspects of electronics (I'm an Amateur Extra class ham radio operator), but I'm new to the world of instrumentation when it comes to electronics.. arbitrary wave generators, oscilloscopes, etc... I have a decent understanding of what they do, just not how to properly use them. An engineer over at Siglent suggested I have a look at some of your videos, so here I am. FYI, I bought an oscilloscope (SDS1202X-E), Arbitrary Waveform/Function generator (SDG1032X), and a Triple Output Power Supply (SPD3303X-E) from Siglent. I bought these without a real purpose in mind other than to learn how to use this equipment in pursuit of my radio hobby and a newfound interest in pursing physical computing things like Rasberry Pi / Arduino builds... PWM motors and stuff like that... so now you know my background... here are my questions...
    1) General question - I understand the outer shield of the connector (and thus the clip side of the probe) goes to a common chassis ground on the scope. Is it always true that signals you might measure from an appliance would always have a grounded side? I'm thinking that the internal components of a circuit board, a radio, etc., might have the circuit you're observing in complete isolation. Imagine, for example that I wanted to examine the waveform on a PWM controlled motor (like on a DeWalt brushless cordless drill, for example). Is the choice of which side of the circuit you would connect the probe leads to arbitrary in that case, or would you need to ground one side of the application on the bench?
    2) Specific question - I thought one easy demonstration of how different kinds of waves and modulations look would be to show the sine wave of household voltage (should certainly be a nice, clean sine wave). So, I assume I would put the ground side of the probe on the chassis ground of the mains, and then the probe itself to the 120v RMS "hot" side of the circuit? w/ a 10x probe, this would give a range of about +12/-12v, or 24v PTP (assuming I am understanding correctly how that term is used)... Would this be the correct way to perform this measurement? Would I need any kind of resistive load in there, or does the probe itself provide the necessary impedance, so I'm not essentially creating a short to ground?
    The next application of that second question is to then compare the quality of power production equipment. I have a propane-powered 120v RMS AC inverter generator. It's my understanding that this one (a Champion), is classified as a "pure sine wave" inverter. In this case, there is no "ground" per se, unless I explicitly were to ground the generator (I'm sure there is a way to, as it does have a 3rd ground pin on its outlets), but I am thinking here... Would I test with the ground clip on the neutral side of the outlet, and the probe on the hot side? How does that affect the measurement if the generator's neutral isn't common with earth ground the way mains voltage is? On a similar note, I have a Harbor Freight Jupiter 10,000 watt inverter that I happen to know (from observing the poor performance of motors and other things connected to it) produces a truly NASTY square wave. I am thinking I would test this in the same way... Ground clip to the neutral side of the inverter, probe on the hot side... as with the generator, there is no true earth ground here, unless I were to create one.
    Any thoughts on these projects / experiments would be greatly appreciated. Any suggestions on fun and interesting things to do / try with these appliances to become more familiar with their use and function is always appreciated. I'm enjoying your videos, and look forward to more. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond!

    Dude, what is the sample rate of that scope? It looks like it has only 4 samples per cycle of that signal! Is it a 100Msa/s scope?!!?

When you say ground is a direct short to household ground and be careful....where is it connected to for battery powered scopes? Be careful in what way? Like what specifically should I be careful of? Sorry, totally new to scopes. Hope the surgery goes well!

    Sometimes doctors don’t want us to take aspirin, just plain old regular aspirin.
    I would dump all other pain relievers in a heartbeat because aspirin works incredibly well it thins the blood a little bit but it has very few side effects. Works wonders for me

    Hi Paul- Nice video. I can't get enough of the basics for using a digital scope ever since purchasing a low end Siglent several years ago- still learning. One caution, don't advertise too readily the fact that you have Schedule-2 drugs in your possession. Not in today's population.

    I must've watched 50 videos on DSOs and they are all pretty much useless. Each spends the lion's share of the time talking about volts p/div and time base, and that's usually it. Sure they show a sine wave or square wave, well gee thanks! What's the point of that? You'd think it would occur to *intelligent* people going to the trouble of making beginner videos to come up with an actual *real world* example or situation that demonstrates the usefulness of a scope!? And I'm talking battery + LED + cap or something SIMPLE.

    yeah that's youtube needs is more learning to use your first oscilloscope they are not as intuitive as a multimeter. there are a lot of vids telling you the buttons, but not telling you how to use it.

    Not enough finger on screen to show the Zero point. Too easily missed.
    When you're pointing at stuff with your index finger, don't forget your thumb dominates the screen.
    I'm not suggesting that you cut it off but keep it out of the way.
    EG, "We also have a signal inversion ..." and the hand obscures it!
    "Then we have our fine and coarse adjustment.." and we get the back of a hand!!
    You press too many buttons without saying a reason for doing it nor explaining the resultant effect.
    I think that I'm going to have trouble lurching through to the end of this!
