Thank you Dylan for your contribution and sharing our history, the experience of bi-racial Native people (I am also mixed indigenous) and for the vision going forward. I felt such a good feeling in the way you spoke about truth in history and balance in respecting contributions from the many communities that make up the U.S. Thank you ABC for the coverage, I look forward to more next and coming years, there are so many important contributions from Native people and educating the public on history is enriching for everyone.
Why does celebrating native Americans have to take away from Italian heritage. I am all for a holiday celebrating Native Americans, but not at the cost of robing Italian Americans of their holiday. That’s not right.👎🏿

@ibreak4pie oh okay so would you be interested in celebrating this day with us? By us I mean the rest of the Americans who work hard and Pau taxes and don't get special treatment. We read about ya in history as well as other countries who lost wars and lost there land. You said your fought for the country guess what you was probably fight some indigenous people somewhere else that will get no special day lol. Being an American allows us to at least think we are free. Any word put in front of American detracts from it and make you less. Alaska is probably the most free place you can be. Maybe Alaskan American people are the only ones better than us so they can just say comments that don't have any actual purpose geared towards the topic.
Do we?
Everyone is Indigenous somewhere!
Okay, ABC seems to be taking this personally. Absolutely no one is trying to eradicate your culture, like what was done (and continues to be done) to us, Indigenous people in the "Americas". Check your bias and realize that Indigenous people have been here since time immemorial, and our perspective is valid and intertwined with the natural aspects of this earth. Our Indigenous ancestors fought with everything they had for our existence in the wake of settler colonialism and forced assimilation. Celebrating Columbus in any form essentially honors violence, genocide and greed. The accounts of this are not only documented but can be physically seen all around us... One should not place any cultural significance/ties to his livelihood, as I am positive that there are thousands of inspiring, good-hearted Italians to commemorate and embody. This one BAD MAN is not it and should not be the face or representative for whole generations of Italian Americans, especially considering he did not even step foot in the USA EVER- he was lost af and ended up in the Carribean... Shortly after his arrival, he set the tone for the next hundreds of years, grandfathering the slave trade, the extraction of precious resources, and the dehumanization others. It's baffling how hard-pressed modern non-Indigenous people are on idealizing his actions. Be proud of who you are but not at the expense of Indigenous folx or this land.
Aug-3-1492 Columbus left Spain. He was sailing with 3 ships ( Santa Maria, Pinta, and Nina ) He was supported by Spain Monarchy.
After 36 days, on Oct-12-1492, he set foot on the island of Bahamas. Claiming it for Spain. He encountered Natives people.
He went by / passed by, but he did not landing in this land ( today we call USA ).
Columbus continued his journey. He completed 4 voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, that opened the NEW WORLD of AMERICAS.
Today, We know N. America ( 3 countries ) Central America ( 7 countries ) S. America ( 10 countries ) and the Caribbean ( 13 countries )

Someone please explain this day to me in detail because it makes absolutely no sense.
@k Maybe you misunderstand me and it's my fault. I understand Indigenous Day very well and better than most people.
Although this is a new holiday initiated by Biden it's actually very ancient and in Germany it's called "Heiliger Vatertag" which in English is Holy Father's Day.
It's intended to be celebrated by all Indiens specifically Indiens from the Land of Gods known as Nwords.
Therefore it's a day for all indigenies to come together for worship and celebration.
Not just meant for Native Americans but Kanakas, Kanakes, Afrikan Amerikans, Mexicans, Dutch Indiens.... All Hindian People known best in North Amerika today as Minorities.
It's not Indigenous day if they don't invite all indigenies.

it is not about the disrespect of europeans, it is about the truth. america is two continents, north and south. columbus never set foot on these land masses. his - story tells us columbus discovered america, how is that possible when millions of people were already here? there existed the large cities of the great lakes [chicago]. over 550 nations with cities and towns like the cherokee, seminole, piquot, sioux, pueblo, eroquis and cree. the many states and rivers like arizona, ohio, utah, dakota and tennessee. to the long muddy water, they called mississippi, these are a few of the first peoples names. so what was discovered? *do not forget about the mighty gold empires of the mayan, aztec, incas and olmecs of south america. they had hundreds of pyramids and great walled cities dedicated to the earth, the sun and the moon. history must be truthful and not just his - story alone to gratify injustice.
Did you know Columbus Day was made because the largest lynching in US history was against 11 Italian Americans and it was a way to say sorry? Why not pick another day other than to be spiteful?

Historically Columbus has his day. By crossing West and having it recorded he let the way to the European's conquest of the Americas. Indigenous people were technology behind and taken advantage. But also benefit from Europeans, bringing horses , metals, and greed.
They didn’t benefit from invasion if Columbus hadn’t discovered the Americas the natives would have plenty of time to progress in technological progress and a lot of lives would have been spared even the triangle slave trade wouldn’t exist
@@kingofgamez_9695 Without written languages Indigenous would be still behind in Columbus' lifetime. In Europe the printing press came shortly after. Someone was going to discover the Americas, but historically Columbus did.
Greed and riches brought everyone over. In those days the strong would strive even in the Americas this was the rule. Slaves had exit in every continent all thru history.
@@richardgomez5008 they had a written language fool though it was not alphabetic and not Spanish there was slaves or indentured servants and besides other civilizations had made contact prior to Europeans such as East Asians and Africans so even if Europeans had not come or had not existed at all the Americas would of been better off given time they would have progressed into making guns cannons gas powered vehicles
Written languages can be read to pass informations to others. That is how progress and technologies are increased. Where are the languages written of the Americas if only in Aztec ruins etc? No the Americas were too far behind to ever catch up. Which tribe's technology was past the European's. Show me their writings! For the printing press has European old books in existence.
@@richardgomez5008 they were advanced in argiculture had a better standard of hygiene knew hydraulic engineering had gold and silver and were not in the stone era as some would believe and they had better and organized societies than europe had even with the aid of the moors that aid southern europe, europe was still packing behind in those areas compared to native Americans. The only reason Europe advanced when it came to high tech weapons is because shared knowledge from africa and asia hence a geographical advantage
The only reason the Spanish and Portuguese succeeded in colonizing was due to plague and 2 facing other rival tribes also they tried burning down libraries and other sites when they had one. Although a huge number of pure natives exist and have kept their language and written text to this day
Happy Columbus Day

God bless Christopher Columbus!! He was a great man
He thought the Earth was shaped like a pear (hence the reason he had to sail under the Spanish crown -- the Italian monarchy laughed at him for believing he could sail to India by going the opposite direction) and was a genocidal maniac. More than anything, he was a straight-up buffoon. Oh, and Leif Erikson was the first European to discover America. Maybe we should have a Vikings Day instead.

@ibreak4pie well dang that's awful nice of ya to invite me hunting in Alaska. Not exactly the reply I expected. I do feel that it would be an awkward trip given the circumstances and financially not ideal( daughter just turned 16 and the used car market is ridiculous). I have been Colorado and Illinois for some decent hunts so who knows. I'm a little curious to what about the initial comment you disagree with. I think we are all Americans( not everyone obviously in this comment section and ive had discussed this with natives to Canada)and no body gets special treatment. We live in a country where we can at least claim to be free and I've yet to meet the first person who doesn't have their own obstacles to overcome or set backs in life. Seems like some like to blame others for that and pretend there some special human that need other people to care about them differently than the others. Also I have nothing good to say about Columbus. This whole indigenous vs Columbus is obviously media fuel by the news Channel it was posted by. I'm just hoping to state some thoughts and make people think with there brains instead of there emotions. You know like the freedom you fought for. If you just don't like me that's cool but I'm more less looking for people who disagree with me or this isn't much fun.
Idiot's Day,,,,😂😅🤣
Supposed to be " Native American Grassroots Day "
The indians also wiped out the first three settlements of colonists along the eastern seaboard. The 4th landing the europeans brought rifles and more men than women. What they discovered was some of the previous settlements, the men were killed, the women were raped, and the kids were taken as slaves to help fight tribes they were at war with. There were 67 indian factions at war and slaughtering one another before the europeans landed. They practiced scalping, raping, slavery and cannibalism. READ A BOOK that was written by any one of those tribes sometime and see for yourself. All the europeans and Spainards did was bring CIVILIZATION to these barbaric/savage people. They were still hunting with spears and bows. Meanwhile the colonists had guns, built cities, build galleys, build concert halls, wrote masterpieces of music, and also learned math and the solar system.
Plus before the native americans, the Mayans were in North America first before the indians invaded and wiped them out. And before that the Stegosaurus roamed over 3500 miles and was the first dinosaur. So if anything it should be called Stegosauras/Mayans Day.

For the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's voyage in 1892, following a lynching in New Orleans, where a mob had murdered 11 Italian immigrants, President Benjamin Harrison declared Columbus Day as a one-time national celebration. The proclamation was part of a wider effort after the lynching incident to placate Italian Americans and ease diplomatic tensions with Italy. During the anniversary in 1892, teachers, preachers, poets, and politicians used rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. These rituals took themes such as citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and the celebration of social progress, included among them was the Pledge of Allegiance by Francis Bellamy.
