Mechanical seals are an important part of rotary machines where it provides seal at the point of entry or exit. These seals work effectively and is widely used in pumps, mixers, agitators, compressors and other rotary machines. Mechanical seal greatly reduces friction along with wear, results in smooth equipment operation. The energy loss is low and the output of the equipment increases, which increases productivity and lower the operating cost.
When you are in maintenance field and come across a problem in a machine. In some applications there are more than one equipment is installed, that can be run while the other stops working. Some machines cannot have an auxiliary one in the line, may be because of its cost or space or other working conditions. In that conditions if a machine stops working then you have to run your horses. The production will stop and the down time means loss of profit. The maintenance crew then feels the pressure from the top management. Maintenance cost a lot; it does not mean that, to just pick the broken part and put the new one in its place. Some time in small machines the replacement of parts are an easy task. But when there is huge equipment then the replacement of a broken part needs dismantling of a few other parts as well. These huge machines are difficult to maintain like crushers, mills, agitators. In vertical pump when a mechanical seals out lives, its replacement needs the removal of motor too.
The spit seal comes in help and is a good option. For split seal we don’t have to remove the motor, and the coupling. Instead we have to remove the seal housing only. Time and other resources can be saved.
As the name split seal, it indicates that this kind of seal come in parts rather than in one piece.
Mostly it comes in two halves. We have to just put it around the shaft in its housing. The two halves have its own fasteners, which hold it together.
    Application and benefits
The down time can be greatly reduced along with the need of labor.
    Real life problem
It is stated earlier that in some applications you cannot installed a one piece seal either its mechanical seal or oil seal, like the seal in wind turbine gear box at a high altitude. The dismantling of gear box from the runner shaft is a much difficult job. So a split seal helps and is a one man job.
    Disadvantages
Despite its advantages, the split mechanical seal however required more mechanical space; the initial installation cost is high. It is very sensitive to misalignment and vibrations, and has more potential to wear and tear. It needs a highly skilled person to install and maintain. This seal is not compatible with certain fluids.
