This is basically just a two tone paint job with a stripe in the middle. However, the same methods can be used when painting bigger stripes, such as racing stripes. The car has already been prepped, masked, and primer sealer applied. Next we sprayed the color of the stripe. Once that is sprayed we can start masking where the strike will be. 3M makes fine line tape like this blue tape that works great for striping. Go around the car one panel at a time applying the blue tape. It is very important to attach the tape to one end of a panel and pull it down the entire panel at one time. Do not try to tape little sections at a time. This will always result in wavy and even lines. Once you have masked one panel, move to the next panel and stripe it. On this car the stripe is a quarter inch stripe around the entire car dividing the two colors; however, the back is slightly wider and it gradually narrows down to the quarter inch tape. Next we are going to spray the bottom color which is a high hiding color and it will cover the purple without a problem. Once the bottom color is sprayed and dried we will mask from the striped down. First up like 3/4 inch masking tape to outline the fine line tape to provide a wider stripped for masking then use 36 inch paper mask from the stripe down. On the top we're using a silver, which is translucent and does not cover well. Therefore, we are going to spray a high pigment color to cover the purple. This will eliminate trying to cover the purple with many coats of the silver to hide the purple. You do not want to see the purple showing through to your topcoat. Once you have sprayed your high hiding color to match the sealer, then apply your silver. Now you will have no issue with hiding the purple.
    Unmask everything on the car and clear coat the entire car. That is all it takes to do multicolor two-tone with a stripe in the middle paint job.

    There are several ways to do flames, but you could do it this way. The tape is made by 3M. I call it blue fine line. Most auto paint stores carry it. Thanks!

    @roln2572 You may, it depends on how long you wait. The flash time is how long you have before you can apply another coat. This is the 15 (give take) you mentioned. However, there is also a window, which how long you can wait before you do have to scuff. Some paint offer a very long (days) window and other ace a 24 hour window. PPG's window is 24 hours. So if you spray another color or clear coat with 24 hours, you will not have to re-scuff.

  • @CarAddictGarage
    @CarAddictGarage  Před 13 lety +1

    @roln2572 Longer than 24 hours the paint may loose it's chemical adhesion and you will have to provide a mechanical adhesion by scuffing. If you think you will need to scuff, it is a good idea to spray an inter coat clear to protect the paint from scuffing the metallic. I am going to do a video to explain this later today so check back.

    DEFINITELY make sure you get the proper tape for automotive painting because otherwise the tape won't bond to the surface tightly enough to keep paint out and you'll get fuzzy lines where the paint gets behind the tape!

  • @CarAddictGarage
    @CarAddictGarage  Před 12 lety

    You could, but it will leave a very hard edge from the clear coat. However, if you pull the tape right after the last coat of clear should allow the edge to flow out, which would help.

    @SRBtuning 3M makes 2" masking tape. You can lay two strips of this for a 4" stripe.

    This answered a lot of my questions. How long do you wait to remove the tape after you paint? Do you let everything dry or do it while it is still somewhat wet?

  • @CarAddictGarage
    @CarAddictGarage  Před 13 lety

    @willischamp1 I would probably scuff the paint with 320, spray 2 coats of 2k then final sand with 400-600 sandpaper.

  • @CarAddictGarage
    @CarAddictGarage  Před 12 lety

    @tauntonsbest The sealer is for hiding. It does not really help for taping. Depending on the brand of paint you are using may vary on tape times. 1 hour is good in most of the paint lines of paint I have used.

    I heard for application of racing stripes with the two stage method that I need to apply a "clear coat binder" over the stripe base coat in order to apply tape safely over it for the color of the car. can you explain what I need to do, metallic blue with white stripes

  • @tauntonsbest
    @tauntonsbest Před 12 lety +1

    do you have to seal before applying tape so you dont lift the basecoat??? also how long should you wait before taping

  • @willischamp1
    @willischamp1 Před 13 lety

    i repaired the rust on my truck and blocked it to bare metal and applied my epoxy priemer..do wet i sand 600 then sealer, base coat clear coat OR do i 180grit sand the whole thing then apply 2k primer then sealer and base coat clear coat?? NICE CHANNEL

  • @roln2572
    @roln2572 Před 13 lety

    do you have to scuff the body again before spraying the silver basecoat? how about about scuffing the paint before spraying the clear? i thought there is only 15-60 minute window to spray the next coat of base or sealer (without scuffing). go beyond that time and you have to scuff to guarantee good adhesion of the next coat.

    this is probly a stupid question but how exactly do make make both sides even? obviously it will look strange if the lines are different on different sides so how to you make it even if you are just doing it by eye?

    • @LegendaryWoke
      @LegendaryWoke Před 6 lety +1

      You set in your mind a set measurement. You can eye it as if you're just going an inch above or fingernail, etc

    Everytime I attempt two tone, I always get a ridge where the top coat/color meets the bottom coat/color. What am I doing wrong? Is it normal?

    • @LegendaryWoke
      @LegendaryWoke Před 6 lety

      The paint needs to dry or rub the tape by hand to weaken the adhesive as per the video
