  • GM Dan Medina of Derobio Escrima explains that they go do not go force to force but behind the force. The concept is getting out of the way of the opponent's attack while at the same time countering at their blind spots. This can applied both with a weapon and empty hand.

    Makes sense, always puts you in a advantageous position. I like the concept of not being there.

      Sometimes running away is the best self defense LOL! But getting outside of the pocket to counter is a good way to stay out of the inside line (red zone) area.

    Very good demo and explanation GM Medina. We call that seguida (following the force). Nice to see similarities between styles and systems. Pugay.

      We've also seen this move in fencing of redirecting the thrusts. Some systems cover this concept as well, "not being there" is a good way not to be in firing range especially if the guy is bigger than you.

    Amazing principle, master Medina, you are the first I saw using that idea in Fma; it is a very common principle in Karate, not been there, using your blocks to disappear (so to speak) from the eyes of the aggressor. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, greetings from Venezuela and God bless you

      No, if you look at it, he used his empty hand to slap him on the back at the same time he's demonstrating the stick strike. Nice effect though as it does look like he does get hit in the back of the head with the stick.

    Is this also true for blades or is it because sticks are round?

    • @FMAPulse
      @FMAPulse  Před 2 lety

      According to GM Medina, the same concept can be applied to medium/long blades as well. It's all adapting to what tool you have. You constantly have to be aware where your edge is though. But deflecting or getting behind the force with a blade carries the same concept as a stick.

    • @xarismibo2760
      @xarismibo2760 Před 2 lety +1

      @@FMAPulse Yes, that make sense but, I was referring to the block part. I guess it's my fault for not writing it out properly.
      What I meant is.. When two sticks clash, because of the roundness, the block won't work and I will "eat" the stick xD
      When two blades clash will a normal block work?
      Or am I talking nosence??
      This is all just theoretical to my head (the staff about the sticks roundness) since I have no experience with Kali or weapons (yet.) :D

      @@xarismibo2760 That's a good question, that would have to brought up to GM Medina directly. There would be a lot of theoretical explanations.

      @xarismibo2760 Před 2 lety

      @@FMAPulse I was watching Skallagrim's channel and I found out that when two blades collide they kind of stick together and so, I guess a normal block would work there.
      Of course the techniques of GM Medina are still awesome and very interesting.
      But yeah, I would love to hear his thoughts on this as well. :)

    Respectfully ,when someone is coming at you with full force you can not move fast enough without being far away. Up close at stick distance you are better off far away not to engage .you can not perry fast enough angle 1 or 2 is coming in way too fast .

    • @brucele2776
      @brucele2776 Před 2 lety

      @@LosPerrosSonFieles jkd is different. Jkd moves with a feints, fakes , head movements and footwork. Actually the blocks that you had first presented against the strikes that have follow through are very practical and effective if execute with footwork and head movements. When the attacker execute his strike you do not want to block by just extending the stick and stop. You are fighting against someone who have a weapon and wanted to kill you. You must not stand still while blocking. You must be constantly moving, feinting to distract the attacker. In the demo your partner stop after a block. And he also stop after a strike. That is not fighting. And your defense option are circular blocks that are very impractical. If you delayed just a fraction of a second it can cause your life. It can only be effective after you evade a strike and use it as a counter.
