- Women have found a firm place in this election in the form of mangalsootras but issues of security, financial inclusion, equal opportunity and access to public spaces, participation in politics - all have been sidelined. Women have been reduced to mangalsootra wearing, talaq fearing, handbag carrying, goggle wearing caricatures by some of the most senior politicians in the country. But it's not just the women who suffer when such trashy political commentary and media coverage is reserved for them. It’s all of us as, viewers of news and voters, who have to live with it.

The silence of our PM and the minister for women in the face of injustice towards women is unacceptable. It's imperative for leaders to actively address these issues and uphold the principles of equality and justice.
This is what we need to know and this is what a journalism should be like focussing on the essential and more genuine issues instead of just diluting the young minds with insignificant and baseless news as being done by our most of the current news channels .

Excellent and astute observations Vrinda. The point which stuck with me the most is women are reduced to either a mother or sister by most politicians in their speeches and I think it is a powerful idea to start referring women as equal citizens of our country.

Rightly said. But the fact remains that very very few women are serious politicians carving out their own space in the crowd dominated by male members. They feel comfortable under cover of males defending them , fighting for them . Mamta Bannerjee is an exception who single handedly handling her political battle.

The political role of women in India has been complex and evolving. Historically, women in India have been underrepresented in politics, with a low percentage of women in positions of power. The female voter turnout in the Lok Sabha elections has increased from 46.6% in 1962 to 66.9% in 2019, which indicates their increasing role in politics. Also, the number of female representatives in the Lok sabha increased from 5% in 1951 to 14% in 2019. Representation of women leaders at the grassroots level in India is nearly 50%, especially since the 73rd and 74th amendments in 1992, which allotted one-third of all seats to women.
