    Maria Lea Carmen Imutan Salonga, OL, (/ˈleɪə səˈlɒŋɡə/) is a Filipina singer and actress, best known for her roles in musical theatre, for supplying the singing voices of two Disney Princesses (Jasmine and Mulan), and as a recording artist and television performer.
    "On My Own" is a solo from the 1980 musical Les Misérables for the part of Éponine. Beginning in the key of D major, modulating to Bb major, then ending in F major, this is the most important song for the role of Éponine. In the song, she expresses her unrequited love for the character Marius, and how she dreams of being at his side but knows his love is for Cosette and not for her.
    Les Misérables colloquially known as Les Mis or Les Miz is a sung-through musical and an adaptation of Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name, by Claude-Michel Schönberg (music), Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel (original French lyrics), and Herbert Kretzmer (English lyrics).

That made me ask myself back then, ‘Where do I fit in because I don’t really do this-my voice quality is really different.’ Do I have a place in music? But then Miss Saigon happened and that was where my voice found its fit.” Lea is not really known for high belting. She’s known for the quality of her voice, her proper technique without ruining her voice- she’s gone thru that during first year of MS. She’s made a name in the industry that songs are adjusted or written for her.

      As wonderful as Lea is, Frances Ruffelle is the definitive Eponine, winning the Tony and Olivier awards years before Lea came to the States... and Eponine was beloved because of her plaintiff existence, and because of this song that many women had sung well before Lea came along.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@normcummings1967 I believe that Ruffelle hasn't won an Olivier award yet. Everyone has their own definitive Les Miz characters. But Frances revealed in a 2010 interview that she was never asked to take part in this "Dream Cast" 10th anniversary concert despite her good relationship w/ Cameron Mackintosh. By the time Samantha Barks came around in the 25th anniversary concert where both Lea & Frances also performed, the debates were mostly focused on Lea vs Sam. Though those arguments have died down after it became evident that this video of Lea's performance is the most popular Les Miz clip of all time outside of talent show uploads.

    Lea is a goddess. If you know "On my own" then she is known as one of the best who sang that song. The epitome of Eponine. She didn't audition for that role, it was a straight casting then go on as Fantine in the 25th anniversary. Her recent broadway show was "Once on this island", she played Erzulie, the goddess of love. They performed in the Tony's and the show won as the Best revival.

    In case no one else mentioned it, Lea got her audition for Miss Saigon by sending in a tape of her singing, you guessed it, this song! It's not much of an exaggeration to say this song made her career. There's a video of 18 year old Lea (she totally looked 14) auditioning and doing her first casting (or whatever it's called) and she even asks the composer (or lyricist, not sure what he did) for his signature on a Les Mis poster.

    I'm surprised you haven't seen the 10th anniversary show of Les Miserables (which this performance is from). They cast ALL of the best actors/singers from ALL of the performances around the world to that date (1995 I believe). They do the entire show, plus some songs that were written for that performance.

      The 10th anniversary concert of Les Miserables was called The Dream Cast (that was the actual title), and they definitely cast accordingly! Also, I think Lea was the only principal performer to play different roles in the 10th and 25th anniversary concerts. And I think one of very few people who took part in both concerts.

There was a time when she was still in Miss Saigon where her voice was starting to get tired, so in order to save her voice she was trained classical technique. She had great diction prior anyway, but the classical technique she was taught I think also solidified her foundation when singing

    No worries Maggie. Every musician that I have watched react to this has had exactly the same reaction.
    Basically, your comments about how professionally, correctly, and purely this was sung is what is usually noticed by musical experts.
    I know you began with a bit of research, but yea, Lea Salonga is considered by many to be the gold standard that aspiring broadway performers hope to emulate. She's extraordinary.
    There's a fun cell phone video on CZcams of her grabbing a guy from the audience and singing "A Whole New World" with, not realizing he had auditioned for the part years earlier and almost got it, so he more than holds his own with this world-class singer.
    Have a Merry Christmas!

    Voice prowess/control/diction, syllabication, breath distribution/control, just to name a few has been getting better as she aged. She is indeed a rare bird which they have been searching all over the world since Miss Saigon.
