      @222222ania Před 2 lety +75

      There is no curse. When you become the main Disney girl at 11-12, are offered drugs from a very young age and have paparazzi following your every step, everything you do is under a microscope and every detail of your personal life is in the media, it’s normal you will have some issues. This girl was never the Disney it girl and she was nowhere near the level of fame of Selena, Miley or Lindsay (imo she still isn’t). Plus, there is nothing wrong with rebelling in order to cut ties with your Disney persona (miley succeeded, while zendaya is still accociated with kids at the age of 25…) or seeking help while struggling with depression or an ED. Expecting child actors (especially female) to be perfect is ridiculous and unrealistic

    It makes sense that cici was originally written as the star. We rarely went to Rocky's house even though it was literally upstairs and easy to reach in the same apartment building. Cici's house was the center of the universe. Like Penny's house or Raven's house are the center of their universe even though their best friends have a similar amount of screen time. It would have been more obvious that Cici was the star if they had a third best friend so that Cici could alway be in the middle.

    I've always found it disgusting that in America, predominantly, mixed race people aren't respected for being just that, mixed race. These people are neither just black or just white, they're an ethical group of their own and when raised to identify as just one race, a lot of them tend to become depressed and suffer from huge identity crisis. So proud of Zendeya, she is truly inspirational and none toxic

    • @SupernaturalLove100
      @SupernaturalLove100 Před 2 lety +8

      It’s other people in society who make certain biracial Blk folks depressed and suffer from identity crisis due to them calling them not “x enough,” not the biracial person’s family raising them to identify as one RACE because the reality in this society is that PHENOTYPE determines how you’ll navigate the world / how you’re treated. What I’m observing from many of you is that you think that RACE, a SOCIAL CONSTRUCT, a person’s VISIBLE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS, is the same as a person’s heritage. One can be both BLACK and MIXED. This IS / was true for people like Malcom x, Frederick Douglass, Bob Marley, J Cole, Drake, Lauren London, Matt James who is UNAMBIGUOUSLY BLACK, Barack Obama who is the SAME, Beyoncé whose mother is damn near yt passing and mixed AS WELL, etc. Blackness is not and has never been a monolith and both blackness and mixedness exists SIMULTANEOUSLY for MANY Biracial Blk people. Many of them were figureheads during the Panther era and I find it amusing that some of you today swear that they’re “not Blk, but biracial” as if they were treated as anything but Blk during Jim Crowe when they were fighting for us to exist in society the way we do today. “Mixed race” isn’t just half Blk half white, it’s half Chinese half Mexican, half Jamaican half Filipino, etc. So how would mixed race be a group on its own? This discussion required nuance that too many people on social media lack yet swear they are the Gatekeepers of Blackness or the know it alls on who and how one should identify as if they gon beat anybody’s asses 🤷🏾‍♀️

I have a friend who’s biracial but she has more Afrocentric features and she has 4b-4c hair. I always feel bad for biracials who don’t possess “typical” features that a biracial person “should have” bc I have met some who have said they never felt like a true biracial person because of what they see in the media. That’s why I feel like even though biracial ppl do have privileges, I feel like there’s a hierarchy when it comes to it. A biracial person with more Afrocentric features and darker skin does not have the same privileges as a biracial person who fits Hollywood’s mold on what they should look like.

When you look back on most of her roles outside of Disney she as played roles that fit white women (meaning it could also be played by a white woman). I’m actually mixed race as well and growing up I definitely struggled with my racial identity. My father is black and my mom is white. I didn’t really grow up with my dad and so all I really knew was the white side of my family. However, my skin is a beautiful caramel color and although I didn’t look like the white side of my family, I honestly thought I was more white than black because that’s all I ever knew. Especially because my school was predominantly white as well. I remember being in 3rd grade and we were having our state testing, the one where you had to fill in bubbles with #2 pencils lol. There was the infamous question about your race, with the options of black, white, asian, hispanic, non hispanic. I sat there for several minutes figuring out how to answer that question because I wasn’t represented on that paper. So I called my teacher over and asked her how do I answer this question because I’m black and white. She told me to pick the one I identify with most and so I started to go with white but she then gently tried to steer me to the black option by saying, “well, who do you look like more?” I began to feel my temperature rise and felt the tears welling up in my eyes. I felt like I was being forced to choose and I didn’t want that. I told her but I’m 50% white and 50% black. I don’t understand why I can’t pick white and black. Identity representation has always been lacking. At the moment I’m a black girl at a predominantly Hispanic high school and as we’re all filling out our college applications they would occasionally call over the teacher to ask what to put on those types of questions. You would think they would put Hispanic and keep it moving but it’s not like that. It asks them a second question and asks them which category (white, black, Asian, occasionally Native American) they fit into and usually none of them apply to them and the frustration on their face when they have to just put white is saddening. They know their family is from Mexico and that they are without a doubt Mexican but have to put that on a application. One day these will change.

    Being biracial person sucks, people will push you to one side of yourself to the point you are just alienated. For me, Asians would say I’m too Latina, but Latinos would say I’m too Asian. Whenever I say I am both Latina and Asian people don’t understand why I can’t just pick one. Like, Its simple I won’t degrade one of my parent’s heritage and only be one part of who I am. It’s funny how no one emphasizes with that because often time POC would want to degrade their heritage to be white but they eventually loving their own culture/heritage yet when it comes to Biracial people we can’t love both culture and heritage?

      @@novafox5914 I am Belizean too! But my mom is Belizean creole and my dad is what we call Mestizo. It has been very challenging for me in Belize because I was always seen a black and I was always looked down because of my darker skin tone as a child. As I grew up however my skin did lighten. When I moved to LA I would tell people I am half Latino (or mestizo) and black (creole) and people always looked at me like I grew a third head when I said that. To me the sad thing is black people always talk about feeling out of place in society but they don't realize bi racial people do too. And they are a part of that problem. They isolate biracial people from their social group and feel that biracial people are obligated to help them. And when some refuse to do it they get upset when biracial people don't use their privilege to help them.
      I myself relate to Zendeya because I have found myself in situations where I try to help other black people in America and stand up to racial injustices being done to them. I had an incident with people at work going through racism and when I stood up to my boss (which by the way I admit I did have privilege because I was not having the same experiences and chose to sand up for my peers) not a single one of them backed me up. Instead they showed their support in private but when it was time to stand up they left me out in the cold.
      I mean this experience doesn't mean I will stop using my privilege to stand up for what is right but sometimes it's hard doing it for people who isolate you from being a part of the black community and judge you for something you cannot control and still expect you to be on the frontlines for them.
      I am tired of seeing channels that shit on biracial women all the time. And I get some biracial women can be prejudice but it's not all of us.

My great grandma was black and native and married(or had kids with/not sure lol) a white man, who had my grandma and so on. I'M BLACK. Let me be black. Why is it for black ppl or ppl of a darker skin tone, to have curly hair (or good hair as some would say), they have to be mixed or "exotic" in some way? It don't matte my genetics, I'm still gonna be treated and looked at as black.

    I did not know that about shake it up😳.When I was little and watched shake it up, Rocky was my favorite character and part of it was because I'm mixed like Zendaya and I thought she was so pretty and talented and I naturally have a bias for characters of color. And I remember in elementary school when I would talk about it with my friends, so many people said CeCe was their favorite and it still surprises me to this day😭.

    Just to let you know that as an African American and I'm not speaking for all but personally, a lot of use gotten stripped from our African roots because of slavery. And the few cultural things that have remained intake were either commodified and culturally appropriated or used as a way to dehumanize us and further segregate us. So I believe that a lot of African Americans don't acknowledge their cultural background because of the assimilation that has happened generationally for us to survive. Or we try to preserve it and we get seen as ghetto until a white person does it and we get taken out of the space that we created. An example of this is country music and rock btw I know that there are currently a few black countries and rock artists but they don't get the recognition/awards that they deserve as much as their white counterparts, and these genres of music are very much whitewashed. I am glad to say though that I'm starting to see with this generation a lot of us are starting to ditch the respectability politics and embrace our African American culture even if we are seen as ghetto in our society.

    Love this video! As a light-skinned mixed person I definitely appreciate how she is a guide for how to stay in your lane and uplift darker women who face way more challenges. Also, I identify as black sometimes just because in America my blackness is always seen before my whiteness. At the end of the day I know I'm both. I really think it's kind of a personal choice for mixed people.

    As someone who is also Black and white. White people (racist people in my family) are mad at zendaya because she is proud of her black heritage. Around my white family you can’t use AAVE and you are forced to conform to make them comfortable people are mad that zendaya won’t blend in and be silent they’re mad she won’t stay out of politics and just be a “pretty face” I was raised in Texas for many years before moving to California there were so many ingrained racist beliefs before I moved with the black side of my family that I didn’t even notice I had until I started learning about my history. I understand my privilege but I will always fight for the rights of people LGBTQ BIPOC. All of it

    Zendaya herself is very aware of her light skin privilege and speak out on it and raises up fellow black women of all shades and women in general, and it always willing to have a mature and open conversation about not only race but any topic people want to throw her way to try and trip her up. THATS why I love her.
    As another mixed person, she was one of the few people I could look up to because there aren’t many Natives (as I am half native and half white) in mainstream media when I was growing up, and also not as many mixed people as there are now. She fought for her space and for other people of color to shine. She fought for KC undercover and Disney needed her, she didn’t need Disney which lead to them giving Zendaya what she wanted. A true role model

    This hits home for me, I deal with the same comments, where being mixed you feel like you have no representation or identity, white people see you as black or Hispanic and black people don’t want to claim you as part of their culture in terms of not knowing what they have to go through or experience and even sometimes resent you. No it is not the same but we still have to go through similar prejudice and should stick together to change the perspective of society. I am proud to be both black and white, being able to see both perspectives and live in a world where I am not able to judge people for the color of their skin and see them as individuals and embrace their differences. From my perspective I am not one or the other I am both and overall a women of color. I feel the same since of community to the black community and understand where Zendaya is coming form.

    I feel like with mixed race celebrities there’s a lot of pressure for them to represent their black side only, which is totally understandable because black people have significantly less representation in the media but why do people get mad when they don’t do that, like they don’t really “owe us anything” she could’ve gone the other way and been passionate about mixed-race representation or something because that’s what she is, so it’s actually cool that she cares about more black representation and is choosing to use her platforms wisely. Like y’all are putting a lot of pressure on people who will later be “called out” and constantly reminded that they aren’t “fully” black when I would just be applauding her.
