Exactly 5 years ago I visited beautiful Ukraine for the second time. Now people are dying and suffering there because of this horrendous war. It was difficult to imagine that a war could break out in Europe again, so close to home. But war and conflicts are happening all over the world right now: Syria, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Yemen, Palestine, Libya and sadly many more.
The lyrics Mark Knopfler wrote for Brothers in Arms about the Falkland War are universal: a young soldier wounded on the battlefield, surrounded by his comrades, his brothers in arms. As he’s dying he’s thinking about how foolish and senseless war is and how they shouldn’t have fought their enemy, the opposing soldiers, who also are their brothers in arms.
