How to build a Mini Marshall Class AB 8 watt tube guitar amp High distortion Screaming sound kit

- A fellow music nut challenged me to build a mini Marshall amp utilizing 6AQ5 output tubes. Well, of course, challenge accepted. I am a big fan of the small tube technology. So, I came up and executed the plan. Make a no tone, no signal loss amp, maintain the vintage appeal, Make is scream! And as a big bonus, show you how to do it, make your own. Hey guys, I'm not going to be here forever, share the knowledge, my efforts are here for you. My goal for 2022, is 100K subs. I have been at this for quite some time. Please help me with this. I know thru networking it can be achieved.
Note: 6AV6 heater pins are 3&4, schematic bo bo - Jak na to + styl
That sounds amazing.
I'd love to build one . I know how to solder but that's where my talents end ..
I'd.love to see a step by step video tutorial of something like this !!
Another nice little build. I guess my only comment would be that if you are building an amp with an unobtainium power transformer you might take the time to find a suggested replacement. Many of us could find one without too much trouble, but I'm sure you have viewers who don't have much experience and might be a little peeved by the "sorry, but you'll have to find your own power transformer".
Terry, I love that you use, for lack of a better phrase, non-mainstream tubes.
Just an amazing sound, Terry.
God Bless and Protect you and your family!!!
The one knob Marshall Amp! The only knob you need is the volume knob! Play it loud!
Great build! Thank you for sharing!
That's an amazing sounding amp! It looks like the perfect size to go gigging with and playing small places. Excellent job Terry!
You really hit it out of the park here Terry! I love the solid state rectification. And the tubes glowing through the radio glass is cool too.
Sounds awesome Terry! Great job as always!
Self-clinching studs work well for producing ground points on aluminium. To install them you drill a hole just large enough to pass the thread on the stud and tighten them down with a nut until the head is flush with the aluminium. Fastenal sells them for around $1.50 each but you might be able to find them cheaper in industrial surplus houses.
Thank you for sharing Terry, I was hoping for a new video and this one is absolutely amazing! Cheers from a fan from Chile! 🍷
Always love to Tony C. Great sounding build Terry. Keep up the great work.
Love seeing amps built around a specific tube.
Nice little amp design..! Great sound and test..😀
Very cool build. Sounds awesome !
Nice build extremely clean looking sounds sweet .
Nicely done and sounds GREAT.
Building one now, can’t wait to hear it. Thanks Terry for all your help!
what power transformer did you use for your amp? thx
Get down Tony! Good job Terry, very cool.
So much better than the tired old Fender clones. Gain is your friend Terry. Modern players need some grit. The more grit the better. Fender Champs and Princetons have their place but pristine sounds only get you so far.
This is far superior
Awesome build. The sign of a good design is when it delivers using the least amount of parts.
What a great little build!!! Huge sound for, what did you say..?...8 watts!!! There are so many stories of great guitar recordings that have been done on low wattage amps and this build really could easily fit into that history. Thank you D-lab E.! Really looking forward to replicating one of your builds, maybe this year. BTW, thank you for correcting your audio recordings when you have a friend playing guitar to test out your amps. Getting that microphone closer to the speaker really brings out the true sound of the amp. :)
Wow...the little amp with the big sound...great playing too!!
Wow! I want one. One of the best sounding amps I've ever heard. You could sell a whole lot of em.
This inspired me to get a project going again that I had given up on, and I got it to work!
Nice amp and nice rendition of little wing
That was bad ass! Very cool little amp.
I am a electric guitar player en study in my early day electronica .. that is different than tube studies.
You learn my a lot so I will thank you for that .
I do not steal your ideas I only try too understand them .
Thanks for that.
I love the fun on your side .
The "Teamwork" begins to bear fruit! You guys are entering "cult" cool sounding machine territory. That 8watt amp reminds me of a 70's Orange combo That I still use . Thanks guys, pleasing my brain and ears.
Great content Terry! Thanks!
Wow! Terry you just made my day. I just scored a PT from a TV antenna or something. Seems hefty enough for a push pull amp. Chassis is made of copper. That's a really nice sounding amp. You guitar player is awesome
That sounded incredible! One of your best sounding amps to date!
I'm currently building an amp with 2x 6P14P (Russian 6BQ5), for my brother-in-law to use with harp. Might build one for myself too later haha!
Keep it up Terry!
Roger that Sir, Glad you liked
We missed you Tony! Nice play man. 🙏
Cool Little Amp, nice job!
I love the simplicity!
AHHHH, that Tele🎸 sounds 🎶 great with that amp......another great job Terry................and playing by Tony 🎸
Alrighty then! I like your little amp build!
Terry - you've certainly captured that Marshall growl. no doubt... Little Wing proved that ( Nice job Tony). It sounds really nice, excellent job as usual. SWEET
Subscribed, good luck on your goal to reach 100k!
*awesome* sound with only 8 watts! Nice work Terry!
The cleans don’t sound bad at all! The overdrive has a nice open sound to it. Not overly compressed. I’m keeping this one in mind, definitely!
So cool, I wish I understood what the heck you're talking about. But tone, that I understand perfectly. Well done!
Great project, Terry! I'm getting behind your 100k movement. Got 2k amp nerd buddies in the Traynor Amp Owner's group that'll get a steady diet of me plugging your channel, as well as others. Thanks again, for a lot of great guides and tips!
Thanks for helping me out
That sounds awesome!
Awesome build! I'm currently building a small tube amp, using a 6AV6 and an ECL82 in a champ like circuit, all in a 1590DD enclosure, yours kinda reminded me of the looks I'm targeting there
I got mine built thanks to Terry, and this little thing is loud! I’ve got my Weber power soak on about 1 and it sounds fantastic cranked!
Raw,no pedals,no clean up from amp, guitar and the pickups, sound 👍😃
I want one!!! Lol sounds fantastic! Thank you for sharing
This amp sounds amazing!
Grate video Terry
another sweet build
I like it ! Sounds great !
Nice job!
Nice ! As always !
Steve is awesome 👍. D lab(Terry) makes me want to build an amp, even though I am not an electronic person. I did subscribe and now I can't stop watching. I really enjoy it. Steve is way better than watching an oscilloscope and a dummy load. So please after all amp repairs and builds have Steve test them. Leave the dummy load on the shelf.
Cool amp. 👍A thought. If you used another 12AX7 for the inverter, you could use the extra triode to make it thus:
Preamp (V1a) => Cathode Follower (V1b & V2a) => Cathodyne Phase inverter (V2b). Then you'd get the characteristic growl of the distorting cathode follower too. 😎🤘
Outstanding!
Sounds soo good wow! My little 15w monoprice sounds great but it needs a boost pedal. This is great out of the box!
What a nice sound 👍
Nice build 👍🏻. Sounds nice and greasy. This reminds me if Jimi Hendrix had a home brew bedroom practice amp to write riffs with. Hehe.
Wow that does have a good bite to it. And the tone is there. Like to hear how some Humbuckers sound through that.
I been using 6aq5,s in stereo builds. Very nice sounding.
This is pretty cool.
Amp sounds really nice :)
Using paired EL 90 type tubes ( 6AQ5 )is a really easy way to get a ramped up amp. The class AB amp offers you
a cheap and reliable way to get power efficiency and a good sound and so brilliantly designed Terry. A homerun hit!
Now about that big hole in the front of the repurposed Regency cabinet. Just add some speaker grill over it for show.🤩
Blistering good sound !! I'm trying to build something for harmonica with some parts from an old RCA hi-fi. It had a good 300v center tap power transformer with EL84 output tubes. I like the Hammond enclosure and my go with something similar as things progress.
Love that. Might have to consider that, for my next build. I use a DMS Simplifier Guitar Preamp, so I don't really need more tone controls. I'm curious how blues harp would sound, with that circuit.
That's awesome.
Amazing. I want to build one
brilliant. Thanks D_Lab
This is such a great video. It deserves more than 2K likes. Can you make a follow up video showing how to hot rod the new ECB-AB board into a Marshall screamer?

As they say in the UK “cracking build mate”
Nice little build, Terry. 6AQ5 aren’t used enough.
I agree, Thank you my friend
Agreed 100%.I have been thinking through a 4 6AQ5 version that would have roughly double the power to 16-18watts.
@@fiddlix Yes, and that way you would gain a whopping 3dB for the cost of more than doubling the cost of the parts, and possibly not fitting the enclosure anymore.
@@kardRatzinger it’s what happens in the that extra 3db that I am interested in. I was not suggesting to try to put 4 6AQ5s in the chassis that Terry used for his build.
A lot of that distortion comes from the tiny Output transformer as well as lack of negative feedback and no tone stack. It's just a wide-open basic tube amp, she has to scream. Wouldn't call it a mini marshall ,but I digress.
I have this Regency radio as well as the Army Intercom!! One will be your mini marshall!!
You could replace the preamp circuit with the Marshall Plexi circuit and end up with an 8W Marshall Plexi that you could crank up to full blast and get that full blast Marshall roar without the ear-splitting loudness.
Great ..... very amazyng !!!
I love these odd tube amps.
Build a single ended champ style amp with El3n side lock tubes, maybe two EF6 pentode tubes in triode mode to replace the 12ax7.
Or a el42 rimlock tubed amp.... that would be cool too.
great build terry but I want to challenge you to do something that you probably haven’t done in a long time I would love to see you do a video of tube amplifier and pre amplifier for a home stereo system my dad used to build stereo system amplifiers but now he has passed the hobby onto me and my brother please keep up the great work
This is really amazing! Love this love it!
Now have you made one similar to this sound that is a little lower in wattage? Like around 3 watts?
Best,
Brett
I nerd 4 of this conected..... Desde Tampico Tamaulipas México..
OMG Amazing
Lets give a round of applause to Rockin Tony too.
I used the same chassis for your Raven design.
Awesome 8 watt amp>. I would love to have you build one for me!! KJ
You could also try a 6360 or QQE03/12 tube. It's a dual beam power tube used in RF service up to 200MHz. Some people have reported some good results with them.
Hi Terry, great project and great channel.
Just wondering if you could advise which tools I would need to cut the holes necessary in the aluminium chassis. Many thanks
Sounds kick ass.
Man I had a silvertone 4 leg record player. It was a stereo amp but had a aux speaker jack. I robbed it of its discreet amp. It had a dual circuit like this circuit( same tubes) i made it into a combo and it was fantastic it did it all country rock metal. It got stolen. Id like to build another. I put 3 input jacks left both and right.
Hi Terry, there are those like me who don't know that much. For instance, I wouldn't know what power trans I should get to put in here even though you through some power trans specs at us. Not trying to be offensive, just looking for a bit more knowledge on this particular subject. Thank you again, Willy
Hammond 269EX worked for me.
Nice little build but I personally would have used tube rectification for the extra sag on heavy notes.
Yes it’s a screamer!
Nice👍
I am a new Subscriber -- Love the sound of the amp. So, what kind of speaker(s) are we hearing?
Any amp builders close to Maryland???
Great!
Sweet!
Wow! Great amp! Is there a way to put treble, bass, mid controls
Great project Terry. This one's on my to-do list. Could a 6AT6 work in place of the 6AV6? Thanks.
Nice job Terry..very well done..now how about updating a hammond leslie ??
73
Very cool!! Love it!!...Anyone have a link or leads for a suitable power transformer?
Nice work Terry, it sounds awesome!
I'm looking to build something similar using EL84/6V6's for home use, but with the added versatility of a B/M/T tone-stack. Can you recommend a circuit that I can use as a starting point, preferably something that uses easy to obtain transformers?
Thanks
marshall superlite 18 tmb, even if in my opinion it's better to feed the tonestack from the cathode so a lightning matchless would be better , 15/18 watt at home is a lot, that's what you get from a couple of el84s or 6v6s, have a look at micro bassman from Rob Robinette , it uses a 12au7 or 12bh7 in the power section for 1 - 3 watts of power in push pull
