  • James runs across a new Steinway K upright piano. We owned a 1913 K for years and only sold it to buy another piano. You can only have so many pianos in a home (even our house).

James you are awesome and I would love to follow you from store to store just to hear you play the piano and organ.. but I live many miles away from you. SAD.. keep putting up your videos..

Interesting-- actually appears to sound like a NY Steinway, to the extent one can generalize. And I like it very much. Don't know how it compares in finesse to the Grotrian, Bechstein, August Forster, or Bosendorfer (the most obvious other candidates for uprights you've played so far).

Well, except for the hammer direction, I guess an upright could compete with a grand... humm...

Hi James! Thanks a lot for your videos, they're awesome! What's your opinion of the K, compared with other uprights like Bosendorfer 130 that you played earlier? I was on the market for an I pright piano and decided to go for a Steingraeber 138, but the K132 was also quite high on the list, along with 130CL.
Also wondering why you decided not to play the Chopin piece on this Steinway? Does it mean it's not a contender for the best upright? :-)
    Thanks again!

I have not played the Steingraeber, but would like to. The only reason I did not play FI on the K was it was the last day on a 1500 mile trip, and it was the last piano I played during that trip. FI can really wear you out and I didn't honestly feel up to it. There are times when I play EA just to save myself or also to get a different kind of sound out of the piano. I will tell you the best upright I ever heard was a 1980's Baldwin 6000, not to be confused with anything Baldwin makes today. I will include a link below, but keep in mind when this video was recorded the sound was part of the old Sony T-5 video camera, and was not anywhere close to what we do today. czcams.com/video/vPX6sEKo62A/video.html

The only reason I did not play FI was this was the last performance on a 1,500 road trip, and I no longer felt I could do FI justice, and so I went with a very easy simple song that I knew would be easy for me to play without messing it up.
