  • Gang violence. It breaks apart families, destroys lives, and corrupts the reputations of people and nations. But even amidst all that negativity, there is hope. Major Kayode Sutton of the SKN Peace Program and Amal, a man who has distanced himself from ‘the life’, join to share their tales from opposite trenches, and the hope they both have for the future. Let’s tackle The Real Conversation.

Very Insightful! There used to be plenty of programs like the one these gentleman have created such as the big brother program. I grew up with both my parents and that still didn't stop me from seeing what was in my community and being influenced by the wrong things. However having that big brother there which was the greatest help I've ever had to displace my rebellion from right and doing wrong. . Our family(generational) curse need to be broken and it takes more than the interior sources to correct. At the end of the day one must decide as this young man has to do better for their environment. It all starts with self. Without that honest decision the community will always be undervalued. Society has always been again the minority, but we've seen that it is possible to integrate into society in many ways. Fair point is that are are very little resources or opportunities for Felons for the most part and that is sad because they play a role as well. The creation of jobs and other opportunities needs to be similar to those of everyone else. In order to get there we as the minority do have to do better to guide the misguided and support the dedicated individuals already going through the fight. Hope this makes sense.

I don’t think you truly get what was said. Which they all actually agree upon. Being able to recognize and identify how social factors influence individuals' behaviour will allow early control and prevention of future offending.
It is important for everyone to understand and realize that offending behavior is not fixed in our genes. That’s like saying all criminals are just born that way. Criminal behavior is often said to be a combination of destructive inherited behavior, environmental, social, and economic factors. The most honest person you know today would be a thief tomorrow if they felt their only way to put bread in their starving children’s mouths was to take it off your table after they exhausted all reasonable means of providing for them. So dismissing the causal elements and only focussing on the effects actually breeds an environment of negative social behavior. Yes, some people are motivated by hate, anger and vengeance where crime is concerned, but most of these young men and women would tell you that they were products of some type of negative environment or environmental trauma that led them down that path. To ignore that, isn’t helping the problem. Nelson Mandela once said, when a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw. If you listen to the Amal, you would hear that it was yearning for a sense of belonging that drew him to gang culture. Now imagine if that factor was identified and rectified in that young man’s life early on. He may have taken a different path. Don’t misconstrue the intention without adding your proposal of a better counter solution. I hate how eager we are to poke at our own. Especially the ones strong enough to make themselves vulnerable to society’s scrutiny for a greater cause. It’s clear this is being done with the best of intentions because no one up there is seeking fame or fortune from it. Be a part of the solution please.
