Saluting in doors to an officer is appropriate when it comes to certain ceremonies or practices. For instance, when receiving any kind of award from an officer you take with your left, shake with your right, once done shaking you preform a salute even if indoors. I’m not in the marines so I’ve never seen this specific “ceremony”, but that’s how it is for Air Force.

Indoor saluting is completely fine as long as you have a cover and you're only allowed to wear a cover indoors if you're on Duty or Official Business.
