I never thought I'd see this! - Lockheed U-2 display RIAT 2024

- Honestly, I never thought I'd see this happen in my lifetime. The enigmatic and iconic U-2S of the 99th Expeditionary Recon Squadron performed a display for the crowds on the Friday of RIAT 2024. I think the last time the U-2 displayed in the UK was around 30 years ago at (I think) RAF Mildenhall Air Fete. In any case it's a very rare occurrence.
I really hope you enjoy this unique jet 😎

Fantastic
That howl sound!
Yes, on take-off it was faintly reminiscent of the Vulcan howl. Very cool.
@@paulm749 True that!
So cool! 😎
The chase car driver needs a contract with Haas F1 with his lap times 😂
🤣
Wow!! It’s been many years since the U2 flew at an airshow, it’s an incredible, menacing aircraft.👏👏🇬🇧🇺🇸
Think how impressive aircraft engineering already was by the 1950s, just a half century after the first flight. That is remarkable (and because of two world wars).
A low flyby, a touch and go, and a fine landing! Amazing to see! 😮
I know right! A of a special one 😎
Aircraft with special takeoff and landing procedures😊
Beautiful video ❤
Thanks a lot my dude! 😎
So cool!
I don't know how old you are, but I'm fortunate to have been able to attend several of the much missed and rarely bettered Mildenhall shows. In one show, they put on a spectacular collection of stealth, with all of them there, B1 (full reheat display), B2 spirit (flyby only), F117 Nighthawk, and U2 backed up with the leaky SR71 leaving it's fluids all over the floor when parked 💧💧. Oh and we were deafened by the filthy B52. How I miss those days.
Yeah, I used to do the Air Fetes with family when I was a kid. We live in Gloucestershire though so it was always a bit of a trek. We did manage to see the SR-71 returning from a mission into Mildenhall one time. Absolutely incredible. Great days bud, maybe the best!
@UKAviationMovies Yeah love the distance , we did Yorkshire, Mildenhall, Yorkshire same day. Early starts like that are not in my repotoir anymore 🤣
@Grid56 ha ha I know what you mean bud 😂
Must be nice not having to wear a space suit to fly it for a change!
I thought the same thing 😎
I'm lucky enough to live near Fairford, cycled over for a few hours and I saw the U2 and thought he's just taking off for his usual daily intelligence flight over Europe, .. Then wow, he does this marvelous display
Thanks for the comment. It was a pretty unique moment! 😎
Nice to see the low runway pass with power up at the end, seen it do that on circuits but not that close up! Cool vid👍
Thanks Saint 👌
Approximately 7 seconds after breaks off it was airborne. Fantastic!
Great comment! He sure got airborne fast 😎
That's the advantage of that huge wing. What a machine❤
The downside is that it's hard to land, like a glider it just wants to stay up.😊
@@Grid56 That dark angel is reluctant to come back to earth!
Holy hell
Right!? 😎
What camera and lens do you use?
Great video by the way
Thanks bud. I used a range of stuff, this video was shot on a Sony AX53 👍 Thanks for the comment
This is stick and rudder flying
Definitely. Skills 😎
What a graceful aircraft. ❤
Can anyone explain how this doesnt topple over when it lands
I used to fly gliders and it's the same principal. If you watch the wings after the jet lands you can see the pilot putting slight control inputs in to keep the wings level. In a glider, if the wind was strong enough, you could keep the wings level even when it was stationary 👍
@@UKAviationMovies thank you
Just to add: it does topple over eventually. That’s what the curved elements on the wingtips are for: they allow the wing tip to rub along the runway without damaging the plane. The chase car folks then jump out, lift the plane up straight by hand and refit the stabiliser wheels that you can see falling off at the start of the initial takeoff run. It then taxis normally on all 4 gear (not landing gear: it only has two of those 😊)
