  • Turtles are great pets, especially if one wants to have them for a whole lifetime, say even forty years. Although people love turtles for pets, they make many mistakes while caring for the turtles. Some errors are minor, while others could be detrimental to the turtle. This video discusses some five mistakes every turtle owner makes at some point while caring for the turtles.

I just found a Cumberland slider outside.. poor little thing was in the middle of no where and far away from water, not sure how he even got there but I took him home.. bought a tank and set it up similar to how yours looks.. but he will ONLY eat romaine lettuce.. no mealworms, shrimp or pellets.. I'm scared he'll starve.. any help?

Hope you've added a screen over the tank. It's not a good idea to have the bulb over a tank which doesn't have a screen. The bulb can accidentally fall into the tank and electrocute the turtle. I got my red eared slider turtle as a hatchling, the tank has always had a screen. My turtle is now over 20+ years old.

Thank you for the video, it was helpful. I have a couple of questions.
    1) I have a heating lamp 75 watts, I was wondering how long should I keep it on? Right now I turn it on in the morning around 7/8 am and I turn it off at night around 10:30 pm. Or can it stay on 24 hours?
    2) How many hours should the UV8 or UVP light stay on? Not sure if I got the names right?! Please correct me.
    3) what did you glue on the basking island?
    4) how do I measure the length of the turtle? Do I measure just the length of the shell?
    5) If the turtle developed a pyramid due to feeding too much protein, can it be corrected?
    6) can the uv light and the heating light be used together?

    • @budiawan1784
      @budiawan1784 Před rokem +2

I use heating lamp only in night 21.00-06.00
Uvb, i only use uvb light bulb in a cloudy mornings, for 4 hours. Sunlight is the best (basking them 07.00 for 20 minutes maks.
I never glue their basking platform. I make as stable as possible
I measure my res at carapas; from head to tail. ONLY CARAPAS, NOT head to end of tail.
If you have big stomach, because over eat, can it be corrected? Yes of course. You can out home and jogging;and come back....but turtle??? They can come out, “jogging“ and never come back..... (Goodbye Sirr)
Uvb (not warm, but accelerate vit D) and uva (warm) can be using together

I beg your pardon, “ALL” turtle owners get the lighting and tank size, and food wrong,?!? Might want to reword speech! And I’m ALSO on a budget and in between jobs right now. BUT, my babies Elsa and Olaf are my priority! Even before my son!!(Calm down everyone who’s ready to say that’s awful, my boy is 23!)!! They have a 115ltr tank, fluval filter, constant water temp at a comfortable 80dgs, 3 basking stations, it’s one in rock, another in grass and the 3rd in wood., all with ramps and slides and various other things to hide/play with, have the run of my living room to come and go as they please. I actually can’t get a minute seat by myself cos my gorgeous girl is up my leg, and burried into me, whilst my beautiful boy wrecks anything he can’t get over, under or through!! A 3ft uva/uvb lamp, and in winter, I sleep on my sofa with them cuddled up beside me, and OH, on their VELVET heat mat. They also LOVE a swim in the big tub whist cleaning them out. Their diet consists of pellets and vitamin drops, tuna, king prawns, chicken, greens, tomatoes, strawberries etc!! The only thing I fail to do is use Evian or San Pellegrino for the jacuzzi effect, in the tank, my bad!! I am however in a country with the best fresh and clean water in the world. So, sir, please do not sum up as a whole, try individuals. I LOVE my babies so much, even I myself know it’s ridiculous! I prefer animals to some people truth be known!😜BUT, you are forgiven, and Hiya, fae bonnie Scotland.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💚🐢🐢💚🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I'll probably let my turtle go in a lake near the end of Summer.. I found him in near my Chickens,,1,000ft from any body of water ..Likes to eat freeze dried River shrimp, mosquito larvae, and mealworms..

Make sure the lake already has red ear sliders in it. Red earred sliders/turtles are invasive in lots of placed and outcompete local wildlife
