  • Since it’s June, I figured I’d share how my dolls helped me become the “proud” person I am today, how they taught me to be myself when everyone tried to force me to be “normal”. It’s a happy ending, I promise!

    Thank you for sharing your story. It's absurd how prejudiced people are. I don't even know what to say about that's except that I think all of us have been of the receiving end of being teased and it hurts. Kudos to you mom and that therapist! I'm glad that you are authentic to yourself! I really have been enjoying your doll stories. 😄

      Exactly, we all go through things as kids, so I hope this just proves even more that we’re all the same 🥰

    This was so kind of you to share your story, it could very well help someone in the doll community. Your experiences were not easy in school, some kids can be brutal, but you were strong. Can I say that some teachers, whatever someone’s sexuality is, hetero or gay, they are terrible people that don’t belong anywhere near children. It’s so great you have a hobby you love in safe surroundings with people that are caring. And you described a dynamic mother, she was a mama bear, the best kind, no one was going to mess with her son. Keep enjoying your dolls and making your videos.

      I hope teachers are better today… but that might be asking a lot! However yes, I’m lucky I had my passions and that my family did come around to who I was. It wasn’t as smooth as I made it sound in a 40 minute video, but that’s exactly how it had to happen 🥰

    I'm glad you shared your past experiences with us. I grew up in the 50's and graduated from high school in the late 60's in the USA. Things were so much more different then. Kids under (about age 15/16) weren't sexualized like they are today. It probably started in the mid 1970's and got worse with every year. When I was in my 20's I hung around a male gay friend between dating. It was a break from being pressured into having sex all the time because he wasn't interested in me in that way (never admitted it until later but I knew). We had a lot of fun together traveling and just hanging out. This was when I started really paying attention to gays. By the 80's AIDS was a thing and straight males really started getting vocal in their beliefs. That would explain your teacher, even though you are Canadian. I feel bad for you but want to say that instead of getting better, I'm sure it did in the 90's and early 2000's, it has grown much worse now with transsexuals just trying to be who they are. i don't understand them but what they think or do isn't any of my business. With the political uproar in the US going on right now things have gotten worse instead of better. This country has gone backwards instead of forward with excepting people that are different from themselves. Hang in there. I'm glad that you overcame all the obstacles of growing up and that your parents accepted you are you are. Many weren't that lucky. (BTW, one of my favorite songs from the 70's was The Killing of Sister George by Rod Stewart. Love the message in it.).

    • @DisBlaine
      @DisBlaine  Před měsícem +2

      Yes, that was a big problem I was vague about (AIDS) because I always try to be careful in my vids in case kids find a way to watch them for the dolls. But yes, I experienced a lot of fear, people thinking they would catch something if they touched me, so I knew where the repulsion was coming from.
      It can only get better!! 🥰

      Awwww it’s not always bad to care what people think. I’m the polar opposite to the point I can be selfish. You just need to learn to navigate it. One thing I like to myself when I have those moments of caring what people think of me:
      “Get over yourself, Blaine. No one cares what you do.”
      And then I can laugh at myself for thinking people do care. I mean kids and youths care about what everyone is doing. But most adults are so stuck in their own experience, so keep that in mind if it helps 🥰

Thank you so much for sharing your stories; one of the most important things people can do is share their stories and their truths. How am I just now commenting on this? As usual, Grace and I watched it together right after it came out but making time to go back and comment is apparently another story. At any rate, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I think one of the most important things you said was that even though YOU might have felt strongly enough about your dolls and had a good enough sense of who you were, that is absolutely not the case for everyone. I have a friend who voluntarily underwent conversion therapy because she was so desperate not to be a disappointment to her parents and not to be "doomed to hell". It is heartbreaking the lives and the joy that are taken from people because of bigoted beliefs, shunning, and bullying. I'm so glad you were fortunate enough to know yourself and be uncharacteristically secure in what you wanted out of life. Happy Pride!

And yeah I made sure to mention my friend I used to play with because he had a different experience - and personality lol. He walked the halls with his head down, so shy. I was like 🎵here I am, coming through with my dolls🎵
      I must’ve been so annoying 🤣
      But yes I was lucky to be born so defiant, as my mom put it (not stubborn). Most people care what others think. The world would be so different if we all just did our own thing and didnt care so much about what everyone else is doing.

    • @DisBlaine
      @DisBlaine  Před měsícem +1

    My son liked dolls when he was younger, mostly baby dolls. He has one AG doll, Elizabeth. He is straight and has gravitated more to stuffed animals (mostly because his girlfriend is scared of dolls). I really dislike the gendering of toys. As a society we need to get beyond it. Walmart was especially bad with their coded blue and pink toy aisles (they’ve since done away with that).

I was made fun of at 11 and 12 for still playing with dolls by my own friends! And I am female and collecting at 31.. so it's interesting, yet older people will watch football all day and it's different. I think it's strange looking back.. why did they wanna grow up so badly and why did they need me to? I kept my childlike wonder and I think I live a happier life now than alot of people, not in a judgemental way just in a "I wish they'd listen" and find their childlike wonder too. Does not have to be toys or collections!

      Yes who decided that sports / games are okay for adults but dolls aren’t?
      I know it’s part of the pack mentality but sometimes it feels like people are a bit resentful, and if they’re resentful, there must be envy in there somewhere, that others are brave enough to do what they want. Maybe that’s my defense mechanism to feel that way, but it’s given me… patience 😅

      Wait do you mean seeing the outfits in this video is what made you buy then? That’s such a relief if so! I was worried I didn’t showcase them properly because I was so focused on what I was saying.
      And Claudie??? That always makes me glad 😆 I love how she looks in the orange outfit. Which ones did you get?
      The newly released Addy? I’m lucky I got a good one, but it must be amazing to pick one out in person. Congrats on all your new doll stuff 🥳

      @DisBlaine yes, I've seen the birthstone collection on the AG website and they never really called to me. But seeing them on dolls in your video changed my mind. I bought 3 of them... January Garnet, February Amethyst and November Citrine. I already had Julie's robe and pjs. I also saw they had a couple of the Jasmine doll in the store. She's so pretty, I think I'm going to apply the bonus points I earned today towards buying her next.🤞

Fortunately, I understand totally because I watched and protected my friend. He still has his dolls and I do too…. lol. I was talking to my finance and we were both saying how sometimes we forget how not that long ago the prejudice was so much worse. And I really appreciate you sharing your story and I'm happy to see that you never let those people stop you from being who you are.

    thank you for sharing your story! believe it or not, even as a gen z, i had a similar experience as a kid, except i liked both "girly" things like dolls and disney princesses and "boyish" things like video games and marvel. but i got ostracized by the girls for liking the "boy" things and by the boys for liking the "girl" things, and on top of all that, i was very overtly neurodivergent, so i didn't have very many friends until i was a teen. but, just like you as a kid, i didn't really care about what anyone thought. so i'm really proud of both of us for that, and if i had a message to the kids of today, i'd say that the best thing you can be is yourself!
    p.s. i am non-binary now. not saying your interests dictate your gender identity but i feel like i never really fit the boy or girl labels as a kid and it makes sense now that i'm 17 lol

      @DisBlaine  Před měsícem +1

      Oh wow! That’s wild that the boys didn’t like you playing with girl things and vice versa. That’s an interesting experience!
      I agree that kids should be themselves and I like to believe it’s not as unsafe as it was when I was a kid - but if it is unsafe, it’s probably best to wait. Unless they’re as stubborn as I was 🤣
      But I can see why your experience makes you identify as non-binary. It’s that “bothness”. When I tried to be a normal boy as a kid, they always did things that got me in trouble lol. That makes me identify as a male (I feel very male) who happens to like things that society says aren’t male. But that means society is wrong (stubborn, see?)
      But thank you for sharing your unique experience! I never knew the ostracism couid come from both sides!

    I grew up in the 80s playing with dolls myself as a boy My father did not like it but I didn't anyways he even hid my favorite dolls in the China cabinet what's not a big deal but when you code depend on these dolls to get you through the day and they're missing
    I had a lot of problems making friends in school I was in learning disability back in the 80s that was a bad thing Kids will make fun of me for that
    I did bring my toys I played without other things besides dolls as well but I'd leave him in my book bag just to know that they were close to me and I wouldn't never tell anybody
    I remember My Little Pony's the good kind of the ones I have now but do you remember the series where they had the little babies I love those and the mermaid series
