A nicely done video on a tip up design popular in Ontario dating back many years for ice fishing for whitefish, Lake trout etc. These also work well when the bait spreader is on the bottom and the wooden rod is balanced horizontal.

I've used these many times with a bait spreader as well and have had great success. I find them really good for perch as well, which is one of my favourites. Some nice perch fillets, rolled with a strip of bacon and fried in butter................just awesome!!!!!! Thanks for taking the time to leave me a comment and for making me hungry.
Here in southern North Carolina we get very little opportunity to ice fish. However I could tell by your expression and voice that you love it and I really enjoyed watching you make the "tip up." Great project and video. God Bless.

I would rather see you fishing with something that works
You should go out there fishing with an apextipup. I have fished all my life there is nothing better than free flow line turn the spool let line flow modern way don't be stuck back in the twenties we have got smarter over the years, leave your jig pole at home you won't need it anymore. Apextipups summer and winter tipup on ebay copy that if you're going to copy something make something that works makes your life easier.
Great job don't do ice fishing here in Devon UK but still had to watch this.

I bought one just like that at a store about 10 years ago. I never used the "rod" part of it. I added a jig pole to it and added a coat hanger to the jig pole to fit inside it.

nice vid . I fish on lake simcoe . Winds get brutal and make tip ups dance .This year i figured i can make a low profile tipup and protected it from wind by covering it by a clear plastic box
I've fished Simcoe many times and have never thought about covering the tip up with clear plastic. Great idea. Thanks for chiming in with it and for tuning in to the show.

Hi Kenny Ice Fishing eh? I have heard of it and seen it on TV that's about it, coming from England not much iced over lake or ponds around here, if there are the Ice would be well too thin to stand on. I used to do a lot of Sea Fishing eg off the Beach and Rocks for Cod, Bass etc, used to use a florescent tip on my Rod for night fishing, loved it until the Arthritis got worse oh well that's life. Oh by the way forgot to say, love the Video and Project ha ha. Take Care my Friend, Barry from England.

Ice fishing is a lot of fun and if you are lucky enough to live in an area where that if possible, these tip ups are the ideal piece of equipment to carry out onto the ice. Truth be told, I prefer summer fishing over winter fishing any day but there's just something that's satisfying about digging a hole in the ice and catching a fish from below. That doesn't count. The ones in the freezer are domesticated ice and the are tame. The ice in the wild puts up a much better fight. :)

I have seen you use the ruler that was used in this video on several other videos. Who makes that? What is the correct name for it. I don't fish and there is very little ice here in Georgia but all you videos have something to teach.

One question, why would it go up and down if theres no wind?
+Krzysiek Stefanczyk The movement of the water under the ice can cause it to move as well as fish biting at the bait.
Actually you've only come in a half inch on each side of the 3" board with the mortise.. I know that's what you probably meant. But you had me when you said the mortise was 2" long. That only leaves you a half inch on each side of a 3" board. No big deal really.. 🥴 Great project by the way!
It wouldn't be uncommon for me to make a blunder when I am spewing out measurements. Glad that you caught it and that you were able to decipher what measurements were needed. Sorry about that. Thanks for tuning in and for the kind words on the project. It's appreciated.

I'm a woodworker, not a computer guy. I'm lucky that I know enough that I can upload the show and edit, let alone a printable template. I would love to be able to provide a template but I do the best I can with the knowledge that I have. I provide plenty of measurements to be able to make a template though. What is that square and where do i get one for myself
That square is called an INCRA T-Rule and they are available at most woodworking suppliers. Lee Valley also sells them but if you are unable to find a supplier near you, you can buy them directly from INCRA. www.incra.com/measuring_marking-trules.html
Ice? What the heck is that? In Virginia we fish in liquid moving water. The fish can swim in it easier... just saying. Seriously, nice work. Are you going to do a video on your ice-fishing shack next?
I forwarded this video to my friends in Upper Michigan who do this crazy stuff in the winter. They'll benefit from your skills. I'll keep the info in mind since global warming ain't happening. Last winter was brutally cold, even here in VA. This winter is forecasted to be worse.
+Hardnox I wish we didn't have the snow and ice, but unfortunately, we do. I don't have an ice fishing shack. I'm not on the ice enough to warrant a semi permanent structure so I just pitch a tent and away I go. It really is a lot of fun as long as you dress appropriately.
