  • One of the three instruments in a Mason home is 'the atmosphere,' but our children's atmosphere is created by our personal habits. We need to zoom out (or, as I weirdly said, 'zoom back') and assess our own habits. I like to use three categories to do this: thought, body, and heart.
How do you assess your habits and build them on truth, goodness, and beauty?

Watching your video playlist of Charlotte Mason’s principles is the right conviction I’ve been needing. Thank you. Very gracious but firm.

Autumn, thank you. Thank you thank you. I always seem to come across the right piece of your content at the right time. We've been in such a trying season of life and I have been slipping into a complaining mindset much more than a grateful one. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we believe in a book of scripture that works together with The Bible, and in the first chapter of the first book the author, one of my favorite ancient prophets writes, "Behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance." Thank you for reminding me of God's goodness and helping me turn my heart once again to Him today. I really needed it. Adding you and this video to my tender mercy list.

I am very guilty of not producing thw proper atmosphere in my home.I get into that mindset of just getting everything done and everyone just needs to behave. It's a difficult thing for me to not focus on negative things instead of truth, goodness and beauty. Which makes me unhappy most of the time. I will try some of your practical things. I have tried similar things in the past, but I always seem to fall back into the same patterns.

Have you read Atomic Habits by chance? James Clear makes a very interesting point that our habits are our embodied "beingness" so we're not able to maintain any habit that doesn't align with who we believe we are. It may be worth reflecting on what kind of person you want to be, what things you would love, before a practical overhaul! It'll help the practical stick!
And, every mom fails to add to the home atmosphere some of the time. God's grace to us in that-and Mason says it too-is that modeling how we repent, turn, and choose good again is actually a tremendous gift to our children. They're going to fail, they live in a world where others will hurt them and things won't go their way, and they'll need those muscles of repenting and returning. They'll learn this from parents!

@@thecommonplacehomeschool I have not read the book, but have heard great things and reviews about it. I know the type of mom I want to be, but suffer in keeping up with the execution of being that person and letting my sinfulness and practicality get in the the way. Trying to keep up with all the things I need to do as a mom of 7, 6 of them 8 and under.
I maybe am too prideful and will not repent to them when I need too, more than likely justifying my sin. Perhaps reflection on what I do to them that is sinful, then repent would be a great start. If make yourself repent, then it is likely you will check yourself more often. But I likely need more contemplating on what actions I do towards them that are sinful.
Thank you for your generous reply.

Thank you very much. I feel sure you're a God-send. This has been a much needed gut check for me. I've known I have some bad habits interrupting our atmosphere, but I wasn't fully facing it. Just waving them away like an annoying fly. 😅
My husband also knows when something is up. 😂 He just mentioned this the other day and he hasn't been around much, because of work outside the home. But he still could tell from my energy levels and crankiness that bad habits are back.
I love your synopsis of Atomic Habits! I heard of the book from others as well. I'll probably look it up on BlinkList but for now this video is extremely helpful!

So happy to hear it was a help. And what is it with those husbands? They really have laser vision into the root of a problem even when they only catch bits and pieces!

What are your thoughts on the gather round curriculum? Something more simple for a mom wanting to start out doing CM coming from a hybrid modern classical style school (trivium based)
