Li Hongbo's Paper Sculptures

Chinese Artist Li Hongbo's paper sculptures look ordinary at first glance, but what seems to be a simple bust turns out to be thin sheets of paper glued together. When pulled, they seem to stretch infinitely. Each sculpture requires a painstaking amount of work and takes 4 to 5 months to make.

This is absolutely amazing. Yet, it's a little freaky at the same time. This fabulous work and I hope they can create something on a much larger scale.

It would probably still break your hand because they are dense layers of wood. When it's just a single sheet paper, it is fragile because of the thinness.

I'm a sculptor. I'll make you one for $1,000. His are on average $20,000. He doesn't sculpt them himself anyway.

Would be great to have them, but even $1,000 apiece is still not an amount I will spend on art. It is definitely not that they are not worth that kind of money, but I just don't have a house yet that would accommodate them like they should be. I have a home designed that I am to build and that is within a few year's plan, but for now I just don't have the right place to put them. For the place I live now I would never spend that much on artwork or furniture. It's gotta have just the right place to be.

They should have the sculpture below table level, then as it's pulled apart, the base is brought up to table level. Then when it's returned to its compressed original state, . . . it magically appears as a sculpture. Freaky ! Just like this website.

The sound effects from one of the other works in the room is really obnoxious. Why not turn down the volume on that thing, and maybe move it to a location where you can't hear it if you're near other pieces of work.

Great idea but symolic somthing.. why automatic a female bust was chossen?
Is there a problem with a female bust? Females tend to have much softer looking faces than men, so a female bust seems logical.

+שרית גר i'm an outspoken feminist as well, but i think you're being overly touchy here. The artist has a variety of works and they are both male and female. In fact, within this video itself there is a male bust right next to the female one that the gallery staff is doing the demonstration with. There's a distinction between standing up for female equality and feeling victimized about perfectly normal things.
