Lyrically he feels so distinct, almost unprecedented in how he can convey something through metaphors, and there’s such a focus and intelligence to the lyrics it’s just on another level than any songwriter I’ve ever heard.

@@Blackout0900 Nobody is under any obligation to forgive anybody. This is Christian propaganda. Often the best thing for someone is not to forgive. Personally, I don't believe in forgiving anybody who doesn't seek forgiveness and doesn't satisfy the basic conditions for being forgiven.
Don't know if this would make any difference to anyone, but I noticed for the first time recently that the 2nd and 4th times he sings "lady" he sings it a half step higher, apparently an F instead of an E. It's more apparent at the end because they're so close.

@@daltonmoon646 It's interpretation is entirely up to you. That's what is great about his songs, they are more dream like. Still I see it as a reference to herion which he was not doing at the time as far as I know, but he still wrote songs like Single File which is definitely about methadone clinics.
But your interpretation is always the right one, I think he said that himself. It's such a dream like song I wish I didn't make that connection but I just do.

I don't know who's playing it, but I've thought I could hear one in Christian Brothers, too. Around five seconds in is at least one place it's particularly noticeable. 3:24 is another.
There is a CZcams video of several producers talking about their time recording Elliott, and I think you're 100% right re: Christian Brothers. Lady mentions he did not play cello at all, learned it enough for the piece. Played it, and there's a point where the note is a touch flat, and she mentions that he kept it in the track, and played down to the "wrong" note with the rest of his track layers, on the fly, to make the miss work as an odd tonal shift. That it absolutely worked for the song.
