  • This video is a part of a 27.5 km (17 miles) trip. We were in Rangitoto Island and heading to North Head. We were paddling upwind. 20 knots wind with some really strong gusts! Thanks to Gerard from Auckland Canoe Club for organising the trips!
Sea kayaks: Gerard is paddling a NZ made Barracuda Safari (520x60 cm) and I am paddling a Canadian made Riot Edge 14.5 (441x57 cm / 14'6"x22").

That looks fun! Love it. Excellent video. I can feel the excitement watching it from home.

Hi! Thank you. Nice to see a visitor from 9000 miles away! It was a fun windy trip. The next video is about the same trip but with the rain on top 😂

@@Fishaholicboy Yes, I quite like big waves but mostly in summer! It is currently winter here and it’s freezing!! For me anyway but for you it might still be mild as you get some really cold winter there!

This seems to have been a really nice trip, good wind and some pretty-good-sized-waves, and sunny at that, perfect conditions:)! I'm really impressed with those distances you paddle, I'm to lazy for that haha, maybe it's the age...😂🤣

I think it is the habit! Gerard who is paddling with me on that video is 69, I believe. I hope I can be as fit as he is at that age!

In the clip there was a lost balloon Gerard tried to get but couldn't. I didn't even try because I nearly went upside down earlier when going sideways to the wind, with the kayak wanting to turn and go downwind.

Nice and sloppy. Even on the river down here a good blow will stop you dead in the water or push you back. Managed gusts of 100+km/h last year (average 60km/h), progress was very slow.

Thanks! About 20 mn later we couldn't see anything because of a massive shower! The rain drops were even painful because of the strong wind 😂 At some point our speed was only 2 km/h when paddling normally. I started to get quite cold that day, it was about 6h out in the wind and rain.
I will upload the video in the rain next. I run out of hard disk space for editing the video, I need to get another hard disk soon.

@@kayakintro In the big wind I cranked it right up and made a whole 100m in 30 minutes. Got hit with a side gust and it moved me about 2m in the Arcadia.
On the bicycle I didn't bother with wet weather gear, just got soaked from the inside. Just wore shorts and singlet, the same as I use for the kayaks. Hail hurt in winter but the colder it was the higher I cranked it up so never cold.

Hard wind from the side with a wing paddle sucks, can tip you over in no time

Absolutely! I was happy I wasn't paddling a surfski that day. Not only you can tip over but you can also hit badly the surfski with missed paddle strokes...
