I work on industrial equipment for a living. This machine surprised me because of its quality. Most of the equipment I take apart, at home, is junk. Disposable garbage that isn't worth rebuilding.
This machine is an exception. Thank you for the videos and the ability to order parts

Yup. Even though Kitchen Aid mixers aren't quite as skookum as they used to be, they are still far better than the vast majority of "consumer" (I hate that designation) crap on the market.

I bought my pro 600 years ago and only did the dime adjustment with it and put a cover on it! I have numerous attachments that I haven't tried yet. I like learning how to do all the things you show here! I used to work on many appliances for Sears. Washers and dryers, bench power tools, recreation equipment, garage door openers and outdoor grills!

Your video saved my wife's "Classic" from the scrap heap. She took it to a KitchenAid Certified tech over ten years ago because the lower speeds weren't working. The "Certified" tech "repaired" the mixer and told her he had to bypass the low speed gears. So all this time we thought that the "gearbox" wasn't serviceable. I ran across your speed tuning video, tuned it myself, and had it humming like new in less that 15 minutes. No parts required. Thanks. I now know where to go if I need service or parts.

This video helped me diagnose the problem with my second-hand Classic mixer. After ordering pin punches and a new speed control board from your website, this video helped me disassemble the mixer so I could access the detached tension spring, swap out a broken board, and tune my new speed board. Once I had the correct pieces, the process took me about an hour. I'm sure any future attempts will go much smoother.Thank you Mr Mixer!

Thank you so much! I just got the 100th anniversary(my Mother-in-law bought it and stored it for two years because I LOVE the color) as a wedding gift and I noticed the stir speed was WAY too fast. When I did the finger gun test, I got 17 rotations instead of 10 in 10 seconds. The adjustment was so much easier that I was expecting and thank you for being so thorough! I have a hard time following verbal directions, so the visual with the verbal explanation was SO helpful. My husband can attest to how excited I got when I fixed the speed! No more flour all over the place when I am on the stir setting!! I have also bought the EverDime + spring and washer bundle for myself and the two mixers my MIL recently bought.
We also had called KitchenAid about the spring and washer being missing, because they still show the spring and washer on the box the mixers come in, and they told us they no longer made them and that they were not necessary. I found your videos on tiktok and it confirmed my suspicion that the spring and washer actually serves and important purpose! Sad ways companies are trying to save pennies now. Any who, thank you again!

Your videos are great. My classic model k45ss made a horrible noise and stopped working. First I changed the worm gear and regreased per your videos. Also changed out the motor brushes. There was a funny looking piece loose inside when I opened the end cap, so I kind of ignored it. Turns out it was a weight from the governor, lol.so I replaced the speed control board and the governor. It was working but still sounded rough, and worse when I replaced the end cap. I saw another video of a guy tightening the nuts on the metal frame behind the control board. In fact, he zapped himself while doing it. Sure enough, those nuts were very loose, almost falling off. I tightened those (while unplugged) and voila, replaced the end cap and much quieter!! You may want to mention this. Thank you so much! I'm a 65 yr old grandma and I loved fixing this even though it was very frustrating also. it was like a puzzle!

Brushes were half way down (compared to what you held up) 10 year old machine with normal use. However they worn non uniformly so I think they were struggling to make good contact. I just sanded them smooth and worked again.
As far as orientation. The brushes are 6x6mm but notched in one of the four corners. Likely to require brand servicing. The notch looked removed in post production. Orientation was not uniform. Shining a light down the tunnel reveal the indentation to avoid. Could probably just bend it out of the way to fit normal brushes.
While at it. I removed the back cover. Our machine is a 220v. Purchased in the US knowing we would take it overseas. From day one the stir speed (number one on mine) would only work half of the time and barely if it had a load. After moving overseas, and no longer needing a transformer, the problem remained. Glad I saw your video. Finished tuning with a digital rpm counter.
You Should consider making a clean 5 tips for maintaining or servicing your KA video. Maybe remove some of the fluff and edit well. Good to your another diy channel

Thank you so much for this video! I was able to fix my machine, thanks to seeing this. My mixer wouldn't stir at the right speed, way too fast. While your video helped me adjust it, the big issue was that the entire board wasn't secure due to one of the two screws/nuts on either side having come out. So it wabbled while running and messed up the speed, of course. When I took off the cap, I found a nut and noticed it was off one of the screws. Once tightened in place, the stir speed was nearly ideal, but again, thanks to your video, I tuned it to what I wanted (I like it slow. Otherwise, flour goes flying). Now it works as good as new, which is amazing size. I bought it back in 2005 and use the mixer several times a month. THANK YOU!!!

Soo...fun factoid. The governor balls which move out with centrifugal force to keep the mixer from spinning too fast were used years ago on steam engines. The shaft was oriented up and down so the balls swung outward and release steam pressure preventing catastrophic over revving.
This is where the phrase "balls out" comes from, as in, "We were hauling butt...balls out!"

It's rare, but minor electric shocks can disrupt your heartbeat (cardiac arrhythmia) causing no symptoms initially, but weird symptoms and death hours or even days later.
You're risking it anytime you work on live equipment, but at least an insulated screwdriver set would reduce your daily exposure to the risk.

After watching a lot of your video I realized the white wire on bottom right of speed board was not connected. Plugged it back in and everything was fine. Covering the shank of the screwdriver with heat shrink tubing will reduce the chance of being electrocuted. The reason you only received a mild shock when you touched a hot component is because your shoes provided insulation preventing the electricity from going through your body to ground. If the shop floor is concrete the situation can be extremely dangerous.

Thank you for making this video. I have a KitchenAide Classic that belonged to my husband. It hadn’t been used for a couple of years, so I decided to see if it still worked before passing it on to one of the girls. It was making a weird noise & didn’t seem to be seem to be spinning correctly. I was testing it, following a CZcams Video. Found your video, followed along, and it sounds so much better. Keep up the good work. I’ll be ordering some grease. Can you recommend anything else as preventive maintenance parts? I’d like to order from you. You have a beautiful family😊

Fantastic channel! Thanks for putting in all the effort to make these videos! Found you when I dove into troubleshooting my own mixer. Our Classic Plus (KSM75WH) quit mid-mix several months ago after 16 years of trustworthy service. I've since replaced: brushes, governor, phase control board, and today the new speed control plate (purchased from your site) - still nothing: no movement or sound on any speed setting. Verified power on the speed control board with a multimeter; confirmed the contact lever on the speed control plate is contacting correctly. Any tips or ideas on what to check next?

Absolutely it's either the spring on the bottom of the speed plate isnt connected, the governor weights are missing or most probable, the phase control board needs swapped! Super easy swap, we offer them on our site!

Our mixer fell off the counter and hit the floor. Ever since then the speed seems off and the planetary will stop spinning if there is too much resistance from like thick dough. Edit: I think I fixed it all three speed control screws were at different lengths so I evened the top 2 and fine tuned the bottom screw until the mixer returned to proper stirring. Hopefully it works on the next thick batch of dough.

Hi Mr. Mixer, your videos are just amazing! I've watched almost all of them. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I just bought a used KitchenAid Artisan mixer and it runs too fast on the stir speed (about 84-90 rpm). However I did follow the instructions and screwed the top 2 screws all the way in and could not reduce the speed at all (the machine actually wasn't able to start at that point as expected). Do you have any ideas of what could be wrong? Note: the bowl has dents in its bottom so probably the previous owner probably used it for some time without having the head at the correct height. Thanks in advance from Brazil.

Sir I am a 66 year-old paramedic. I have massage the human heart, I have given people tracheotomy. But what I have never ever been willing to do is try to figure out why this twenty-five-year-old mixer was throwing liquids out of the bowl on speed one. This was an excellent and definitive video and I appreciate the time you took. I am giving this a try this Saturday giving this a try Saturday. One other thing I did notice yesterday that there was like a yellow grease running down in streaks where the spinning head is where you put your attachments on not a lot but a little I was wondering if there are there seals in that head or is that mean it's reaching end-of-life we've had it for 30 years and I know we've never serviced it but we are not heavy users maybe two times a month through our marriage. It is a KitchenAid 6-quart with the Tilt style head like yours.

I recently inherited a Artisan model kitchen aid from my mom, its probably a few years old already but most likely seldom used. I noticed that 1 thru 6 go the same speed (probably the speed no.4 should be) and and only speeds up at 8 and 10. I tried adjusting the screws on the speed control plate at the back but there is no change in speed, and i only manage to turn it off and on again with no speed variations using the screws. Any thoughts on this?

I love your enthusiasm! I sought help for the problem of the stir speed not turning slow enough. I've watched your video and have tried to do the low speed adjustment but it will not slow down to the 60 rpm or thereabouts. I adjusted the two low speed screws to the point where the motor will not run and then backed it off every so slightly. It then will run but not at ~ 60 rpm. Any thoughts on what else might be keeping the motor from turning at the proper speed?

    • @MrMixer316
      @MrMixer316  Před rokem

There are a few things it could be. It could be the spring at the bottom of the speed plate is not connected, it could be a bad phase board that needs replaced or it could be an issue with the governor. I'd check the spring first, then replace the phase board as that is the most common.

@@MrMixer316 Thank you for your prompt reply Mr. Mixer. After I posted my question, I changed the motor brushes and guess what? That solved the problem! I wasn't able to adjust the plate to get it to turn as slow as it should but as soon as I started it after replacing the brushes, it immediately started to turn slower. Maybe you know why that happened but I'm at a loss to figure out why it did. As I'm writing this, my wife is making bread, a cake, and will grind some pork butt a little later on. She uses this machine a lot and now after replacing the gears that stripped, adding some grease, and replacing the brushes; it runs like a champ. Thanks again for your help and maybe you can pass my solution to my problem on to help another person fine-tune their Kitchen Aid mixer.

Great Video - Just got my wife's 20+ year old Kitchenaid Professional 5 back in service again after replacing the worm gear, regreasing, and new brushes. Needed to adjust the speed control and its working good now at proper RPMs for the beater. One thing I noticed though is when decreasing the speed control, from say 10 to 8, the unit will stop, if I then decrease it a bit more, to like 6 it will then turn back on and work fine all the way back down to Off. It does consistently increase speed going from Off to 10, but not when decreasing the speed control downward. I was wondering if this is maybe normal behavior for the unit and some type of safety feature, as everything else is working as expected.

Pay close attention to what the little tab that drops to make connection when you put it into gear as you switch through those speeds, check and see if the little lever is bent. Check the governor to see if it's broken as well! It could also potentially be an issue with the phase board but not as likely.

I have a mixer that has been giving me fits. The speed was impossible to regulate, the mixer was making a rattling noise, then it would freeze up. After replacing the governor and the speed control plate, the result was the same. It appears that the issue is, the ball bearing on the end of the armature shaft keeps coming out of the bearing seat in the casting. This may have been an initial manufacturing defect as there was very little use on the mixer before it was scrapped. Since the armature was not secured in a stationary position, , the speed governor was not pushing on the speed control plate in a consistent manner. I think I can fix the issue by cleaning out any grease in the bearing seat as well as the outside of the bearing with laquer thinner, then securing the bearing in the casting seat with loctite.
