at 15:43,after hours of bumping fish off I finally get one close enough to film, when a random stranger starts up just as I am trying to talk to the camera ! ..got to love it..11 hours trying to get a film completed..Luckily the fish didn't come unbuttoned and I managed to finish that section of the film.

As he said above, it was the first fish he got close enough to the camera in hours, so he was focussed on the camera and in speaking to us, who he was filming for. Graeme would undoubtedly have talked with the gentleman behind, but he didn't realise he was filming, and Graeme was in the middle of playing a fish and talking to the camera, as I said, and he did say sorry! It seems to be one of those moments where a situation which was normal and peaceful at the time comes out as harsher than it really is on film.

First , HUGE thank you for making the effort to revert to the big camera and proper sound.
First Tench, always a difficult call when someone you don't know is holding it, but Id have said 6 to 7lb.
Fish falling off, seems to me it is always worse at this time of year, the old close season, I have heard many explanations, but
the one I favour is water is warming up, fishes immune systems are kicking in, and their flesh seems softer somehow, I'm told it is this time of year that fish grow in length and breadth, so flesh needs to 'stretch'.
How true is this, I have no idea, but it comes from a couple of fish farmers and several very knowledgable anglers.
All I can say is I have noticed it every year since the abolition of the close season, and the problem does seem to fade by beginning of june. All I have ever done to combat it while carp fishing is to step hook sizes up one, and use thicker wired hooks.

hey Greame, here's a tip for you ;) if you lock those 'spiral feeders' I think there called behind a shot of lead the fish wil hook itself on the weight of the feeder. i use this system all the time and i never miss bites anymore since i started using it.

y Zijlstra He has already done a video on the method feeder. What you're talking about you also have a short hooklength for a self hooking bolt rig. The rig he uses is free running so you have to set the hook yourself

  • @winchuni22
    @winchuni22 Před 7 lety +1

Too many on the hook. For tench I use 3 maggots on a size 12 hooked normally. If you put too many on or top it off with a caster you're covering too much of the hook and it won't set as well. Also think you need space on the hook for the maggots to move up or down the hook as the fish takes so the hook then protrudes quickly and proudly. Same principle hooking a piece of corn.

graeme a couple of nice lakes you may want to try if your ever around south yorkshire is the pit pond at darfield and barnborough lakes at barnsley south yorkshire . The pit pond is stacked with big tench , carp, orfe, big roach bream and barnborough lakes has carp, barbel, tench, big bream and more both day ticket lakes and if you want the top dogs you got the nearby river dearne and that is stcked with big chub 5lbs plus and big barble 8lbs plus and these babies can be caught on 15lbs line ledger 3 foot hair rig size 10 hook and halibut pellet these chub and barble will go mad and on the lakes normal waggler set up 6lbs main line to 3lbs hook length you will pull em in all day its pukka fishing .

Why don't you try hairrigging the maggots Mr.G?
This way the hook gape is totally bare, so better hook hold and self-hooking properties .. and also the presentation is better suited; especially considering you want the bait to stay stationary and you also don't want any attention from silvers/small fish.
What would be totally awesome IMO, would be to go as far as using a few
fake maggots or casters on a short hair. Any small fish that do pick up the bait will simply spit it out, they obviously can't damage or displace the bait.
I know I know.. you're likely thinking "Catching Tench on bits of plastic? What's he carpin' on about"?!" (just think of it as a lure..)
    Totally awesome challenge accepted?
    Looking forward to Part 2.

It stops marginal moving fish from bumping into the line .At some places which are fished hard they will not cross when they see a line. This is why some people use backstop leads. It has nothing to do with river fishing.
