    VIDEO CONTENTS:
    [0:00] Introduction
    [2:19] Variables
    [4:42] Yarn
    [5:36] Color Mixing
Goal 1% DOS (1 g dye / 100 g yarn) for each of the colors. 100 mL of dye total per sample
Jacquard Bright Yellow, Brilliant Blue, and Fire Red 1% stock solutions (1 g dye / 100 mL dyestock)
Purple: 75 mL of blue + 25 mL red
Yellow Green: 25 mL blue + 75 mL yellow
orange: 90 mL yellow + 10 mL red
Teal: 75 mL blue + 25 mL yellow
    [6:16] Semi Solid Purple
24 cups of water + 100 mL dye (75 mL blue / 25 ml red) stir to evenly mix!
    Heat to a simmer
Add 100 g of presoaked yarn to the pot w/ no acid.
    Add 2 T white vinegar
Stir frequently. Slowly heat up over 20 minutes
Add 3 T vinegar to let the rest of the color absorb.
15 minutes later turn off the heat and let the yarn cool off before washing
    [9:46] Tonal Purple
    Dry yarn, hot pot.
8 cups water + 3 T vinegar. (Could be higher for even faster color absorption)
Heat on low for 20 min
    [12:38] What is color breaking?
    [14:48] Teal
The set up I most often use is somewhere between the first two examples.
    12 cup water + 2 T vinegar.
Add the dye, heat to just below a simmer
Add presoaked yarn and stir to distribute the color. Then stop and leave it to absorb the color.
    wait 20 min
    [17:15] Orange
Hot with no acid at start
8 cups of water + dye and heat to a simmer.
Then add presoaked yarn and stir it a bit.
Then add the acid (3 T white vinegar added to the side and don't stir things up.)
wait 2 min, stir a bit but you can see the uneven color coverage already
    [19:37] Green
    cold with acid
    16 cups of water + 4 T white vinegar
Add dry yarn and don't stir it up very much.
heat for 20 minutes and reduce heat to low.
    [21:47] LNDB
    started with 16 cups water + 4 T white vinegar + 1 L of leftover dyes
    and presoaked yarn
    [24:25] Washing the yarn
    [25:43] The finished dry yarn
    [33:10] Conclusions

I’m still waiting for dyer supplier to get their SW/Nylon back in stock... it’s a good hearty yarn but still squishy soft. (They sent new an email way too late telling me there was some in stock beginning of Aug?? That’s now sold out). I need to go find me a catering pan, probably at Sams club or something, so I can speckle. I LOVE speckles lol. I will use your tutorials as I’m playing to help me not mess up too badly! Thanks 😉

There is a huge supply issue with bare yarn at the moment. A lot of mills are working at reduced capacity still due to the pandemic and there is more demand for the bare yarn with the holidays coming up and dyers are afraid about the shortage. Gorgeous colors. I was convinced that we couldn't immerge yarn in boiling water, but we had to change softly the temperature to avoid thermal chock and felting. But I mistook.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Před 3 lety +1

In my experience with intentional felting, there is more risk going from Hot to Cold than from cold to hot. (When hot, the fibers relax and open up a bit. If they cool too quickly they can come together in a disordered way.) I"ve never had felting happen from adding yarn to hot water. BUT some fibers do tend to "stick" together a bit depending on how loose the plys are. Not felting since they can easily be separated, but just a bit more grippy. These yarns are the perfect ones for colorwork etc due to that "grip"

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Před 4 lety

I don't think that the salt fact is true. I haven't heard or tried that before. With items dyed with acid dyes, if you add some vinegar to the water then it (likely) wont bleed.
I'm sure you could use lemon/lime juice. Many dyers prefer citric acid powder to white vinegar. However, I think that lemon juice would get expensive unless you have a lot of excess lemons where you live.

There is a chance that the aluminum could react with the dyes a bit. (Alum salts are used as mordants and can shift the colors.) Stainless steel is non-reactive so it would be a better choice. however, if you only have access to a sturdy aluminum pot then I might use it.
