  • About this Program:
This is a technical program, but heavily focused on artistry and emotion. This is at the adult bronze level, which limits the jumps you are allowed to do. The creative moves sort of emerged on the fly. I felt in the zone while coming up with this one and I just felt things happening with my arms, body lean, long edges, and connecting moves that emerged from the music. I put jumps and spins in last. I'm most proud of the step sequence in the middle which I had to learn while still choreographing. This program is the closest I've come to merging with music, at least it feels that way. I love skating it... even feels amazing in competition!!
    About Older Skaters:
Older skaters don't let age or anything stop us from finding and doing what we love! Keep moving and don't be afraid to feel / show feeling in all you do. You don't have to start young or be young. Our bodies can be carefully conditioned over time. Everyone has a pace and approach that can get them doing more and more.
    Training Advice if it Helps:
I did everything the wrong way at first. I started at 28 and didn't do sports or dance as a kid. Lost a lot of flexibility even as a young adult and had no endurance. Starting out I was injuring myself left and right. Too many reps and sessions were too long, tried things my body had no business trying. Ignored need for muscles to rest between sessions and did little to no off ice activity (when I did it was too intense), wasn't doing strength training, and had no awareness of muscle stability or muscle balance. Definitely was not listening to my body. Basically the same mistakes most other adults make... trying and repeating moves without preparing the body to be strong, balanced, and flexible enough to do them. Seems obvious now, but successfully executing these moves requires muscle tissue plus speed and accuracy of response not to mention endurance. You can't get any of that by overloading reps of improperly executed moves at first. If you ease into it and condition and stretch off ice, you can learn while also preparing your body for what you want it to do. Everyone, but especially adults need a slower, smarter approach to starting out and maintaining skills.
Sticking more to that approach, I can now do more at 50 than I could in 20s and 30s. Cross training over the last 5 or so years (mainly figure skating and karate with some mix of biking, swimming, running) has helped. I feel like I'm in the best shape of my life/more active than ever and doing things like cartwheels, spinning jump kicks, new spins / jumps, and learning off-ice axels. Yes, it is possible! So don't give up. Just don't dive into the deep end too quickly and don't overdo at any point along the way. Know your day to day limits rather than thinking age is a limit.
    My Skating Philosophy:
For me, the goal is to skate happy. That works for me by getting into a kind of visual music zone. Jumps and spins not central, but extras. Sometimes you get frustrated in the moment, but overall it should be fulfilling. Programs/routines are an experience for me and whoever the audience might be. That part is about sharing, so competing is not winning or being better than anyone. Your movement is music for yourself and others.
